In this WordPress tutorial video, I will show you how to create a staging site for your website with 1 mouse click. It's perfect for all site owners to test new plugins, new updates, and resolve nagging issues.
I extensively use staging sites for my website when I notice something is not working right.
This is by far the easiest way to create a staging site and should work on all hosting providers.
Keep in mind that it is a 1-way staging site, so you can't push changes back to your website without the pro version.

Late to the party, but thank you Adam for making this tutorial. I tried using Local to make the staging site on my computer, but gave up after hours and hours of effort. This is very simple and I had it up and running in a few minutes. (The orange header is definitely helpful in avoiding huge mistakes!)

This is more me for laying down the groundwork to show people how to troubleshoot issues on their website. I don't do this for updates either, mainly just to test things and find conflicts.

Hi, I have a Question. Can anyone help me? 1. I have a membership site 2. I use this plugin for staging 3. after staging I change some database and code in my site 4. in between the changes, a user registered on my live site. 5. Then I live my staging site into the live site. Can the user data store in my database as it is OR it replaces?

Thanks you so much. My webhost does not provide staging environment and this tool will do the trick. My webhost actually told me do do a manual back up to my computer-which will take several hours, then re-upload them a subdomain folder-which will take even more time. I didn't even bother because I knew it would give me even more trouble with login and stuff like that. Once again, Thanks.

I am really happy I took your (well-explained) advice. The theme I thought I liked turned out to be a disaster. Not only to I not like it in general, but the conversion process was a bit messy, and it would have taken a fair amount of work to get it back to my color scheme, nav, font, etc. I did light modifications on my current theme and am pretty happy.

Cool that you can use it for free to just investigate and break the staging site to fix it... And thrn just manually go apply the fix to live... I would often feel more comfortable about that working better than pushing changes back via am automated system. 👍 Thanks

Hi, I just tried this. I had to change links from http to https and wanted to do it with the Better Search Replace plugin. I wanted to try it on a staging site first and did as you said in your video. However, the changes I made on my Staging site were actually also made on my normal site. I really was on the staging site, it said "staging" in the URL and the menue bar was orange. What did I do wrong?

Hi Adam, thanks for all your tutorials. You’ve definitely upped my game. Can I confirm what you said in the video? - you said you never migrate changes from the staging environment to the production environment. You only use the staging environment for troubleshooting. So this means you make all your changes to the live environment directly? You don’t test it in staging first?

thank you, I have seen you got a lot of material. If anything I need to make sure I don't get lost :-). The 3 topics I am looking at the moment are: 1) how to create a website using WordPress, 2) how to use Elementor that you seem to recommend and 3) how to use the Astra theme. I don't know what they are about but I am thinking to buy the Pro versions of Elementor and Astra so I can have a look of your courses.

Great video! I do have a question: I create websites for clients and when your creating a new website for a client while their original website is still live, what options do you recommend? I really like this plugin, but I have some issues. 1. It's using the same server resources. For some people, this may be an issue, as they may not have that much RAM or CPU available. I'm talking about large sites on sub-par hosts, which sadly is more common than it should be. I haven't heard anything on whether this plugin suspends resource activity when not in use, etc. I imagine they would implement something of that sort. 2. Plugin conflicts. This isn't compatible with all plugins, which happens.. there are a lot of WP plugins. But, it has issues with some rather large plugins, as stated by their devs. 3. I've encountered more issues than not when using this plugin. I hope that over time it becomes more stable and works on more hosting providers. Just some critique, it's not all sun shining rainbows, but maybe one day it will be.

Adam, great video, but I must comment that stating to a user explicitly that the username is incorrect or the password is incorrect is a security issue because for a hacker this means that half of the equation is solved. Stating that the password is incorrect means that the username IS correct, and vice versa. The best practice is to state that the information is incorrect.

You are right on that. I should go and check what it says exactly. I think it doesn't specify which is the problem. Also, I have brute force protection on my site, so you only get a few chances before being blocked.

If you were adding a new feature to your website could you explain how you would make a development environment and when you are done pushing back to your production site? Also, while you are in the middle of a development, how do you handle something like a plugin update? Make updates both to your production and your development sites? In other words, do I have to keep both sites in sync until I'm ready to go to production with my new development? Hope I'm making sense.

One question: why don't you push to live? My thoughts would be that you want to maintain the original config, because as we all know, copying an original over time dilutes authenticity. Cool! Looks easy. You say it creates another folder on your server, i.e. the clone of your website folder? Couldn't you simply swap the names of the folders and therfore swapping staging from live (when pushing the changes live)?
