This is SO GOOD. Thank you! The only part I had to go figure out myself was how to change the WAV/MP3 formatting - the button wasn't working because my recorder was in STAMINA mode, and I had to power it down and go into the battery compartment and turn STAMINA mode button off in order to change it from MP3 to WAV.
thank you for this very thorough and lovely video. I appreciate that your approach to teaching this is accessible. it was so pleasant to watch and you answered every question I had and more for a basic setup. grateful.
Hey, you're welcome! And thanks for sharing your kind words - it made my day and then some. It's nice to hear that viewers notice the little things that make it easier for them to learn...always trying to improve and make things easy to digest.
With mono mix on, i still get a hum from the preamp staying on in the second port regardless. You know how to just mute the second channel and get a mono mix with just the first channel taking in audio?
Thanks for the video. Can you please help me with some settings? I have very limited understanding of recording. I have a shure sm 58 and a zoom h4n. I only record voice overs on this set up. But there is too much white noise. Its so much that if i remove it in the post, the quality of the audio is also getting poor. Can you suggest any solution for this? Is there a setting that i can do to at least minimise the noise?
Dude, you're too kind! And you're most welcome, it's amazing that this video has helped so many people around our little world. And thank you very much for your positive feedback!
You're welcome. These videos were originally intended for the students I instruct so it's heartening to know they are reaching a wider audience and helping others out.
You are most welcome MsMpress 33! I'm just glad it's helping folks around the world beyond the university who's students I made this video for originally!
IOP Video Thanks a lot for the video :D i’ve a Zoom H4n and i want to buy a Rode Ntg3! Have you some recomandations? I don’t want to have another bad couple like the NTG2+ZoomH4N. Too noise :/
Cheers, man! It's heartwarming to know this video is helping people around the world to record quality audio - the world needs more quality audio being recorded!
Thanks for the positive feedback, it is very appreciated! I wanted the video to be a bit different to other more standard tutorials on the Zoom H4n. If you do sample the music be sure to credit the original artist of the music [10:18 Title credit: Elkingtit].
Thanks so much for your kind words and glad that your first weekend as a boom operator went well. I'm so chuffed this video continues to help folks use the quirky, imperfect but usable Zoom H4n/Zoom H4n Pro. The music credits are at 10:20. Thanks again for your positivity! 🙏
Thank you! I've followed these steps but still get quite a lot of unwanted background noise - do you have any advice regarding mic positioning/settings to get the best quality sounding audio possible on a mic like this?
Hi Dave, thanks for your comment. Firstly, and I know this sounds obvious, but try and choose a location that doesn't have any unwanted background noise. It's no mistake that big budget productions do a lot of their sound in sound proof stages and booths. Anyway, do what you can in your chosen location and try and control any unwanted noises, e.g. switch off fridges, computers, air conditioning, etc. Taking a Zoom to your location, putting it into record standby and then listening to what the space sounds like will give you a good idea of the suitability of the location. Next position your microphone as close as possible to the signal (the sound you want to record) and angle it so that it is pointing in exactly the right direction - this is called on-axis. This will give you a good signal to noise ratio with the proximity of the microphone. Bear in mind that if you are recording sound using the Zoom H4n microphones, they have an optimum range of roughly 1.5 feet. Then put the Zoom into record standby as you adjust the levels. Hope that helps.
How many sound recordists does it take to change a light bulb? 1-2-1-2. !I'm glad this video is reaching a wider audience who is actually finding it useful!
Thank you for your positive comments! At 10:22 you will see details of the artist, Elkingtit, who made the music. He is a friend who lets me use his music, well worth a look at his Bandcamp profile!
this video is like futuristic with the audio backround but also like dated and I can't tell if I love it or am uncomfortable from it. I think it's both lmao
It's comments like this that make we want to continue making instructional videos. Aside from the cognitive dissonance did you feel it was informative and helpful?
@@iopvideo3137 I followed along step by step and had my zoom recorder completely set up by the end of the video. It was super informative and very helpful. I watched it again and concluded that it was calming. Great work :)
@@barrieliving I'm a big fan of David Lynch so I try and give my instructional videos something else besides the instruction. I'm so chuffed it was helpful and informative.
@@iopvideo3137 actually quick question man. I picked up the zoom h4n and a rhode nt5 mic. For the phantom power do I set it for 24v or 48v? It’s just the one xlr cable from the zoom to the mic
@@barrieliving The manual says either or. Before you connect the mic, for safety, turn the gain all the way down, then connect the mic, then go into the menu and select 48v, then press record to get it into standby. You should start to get a level once you start raising the gain. Hope this makes sense!
I got a Zoom H4N pro and it is so unreliable as it crashes all the time. I gotta pull the batteries. I can’t trust it and it’s certainly not pro. I use 32g SanDisk Extreme card and have swapped cards and it still happens regularly . So unreliable
Thanks for sharing your experiences and I'm sorry that you have had reliability issues with your Zoom H4n Pro. Students and other staff members have not reported the same issues you have described so I am not able to offer a solution except make contact with Zoom. This is not a review video of the Zoom H4n Pro and I am not sponsored by Zoom for this video - this video was made for students who I instruct that have access to these devices at the University where I work.
Since this about a “microphone” device, I can’t understand why you can’t just talk the damn thing instead of having no voice? It’s a recorder, record your voice damn it
Thank you for your feedback. May I make a suggestion and gently ask that you to take a leaf out of your own book and 'Hang Loose' as I'm sensing a bit of tension from both of your comments. In addition, don't forget that you can choose not to watch any video that grinds your gears that much.
IOP Video sorry mate, i wasnt saying that in anger or frsutration, just one of those ironic things i noticed. I never meant for it to sound so derogatory. I apologise if it came across that way. The way it was intended was to sound like a comedian on stage saying it... but i guess in text it doesnt come out right. Maybe i should have recorded in the context of what and how i meant it. If only youtube would allow audio comments. Maybe thats the next social media revolution, audio comments haha
