The Dispy Diver is the best combination of speed and ease when starting to troll for and catch fish at target depths. It is excellent in the big deep waters of the Great Lakes, and can easily target fish from 10 - 70 feet deep. We show you how to set up a Dipsy Diver, so you can take the guess work out and get to catching your target fish. We use them on the Central Basin of Lake Erie and target Walleye and Steel Head (Rainbow trout). We also show you one of our tricks to allow for a stealthy presentation when the fish just don't want to bite and aren't looking for a lot of flash. Painting your Dipsy diver and snubber a flat black is a great way to avoid spooking fish.
Our #1 Size Dipsy Diver Setup:
50lb Braided Line tied to a 30-50lb snap swivel with a good ball bearing, we hook that to the front of the Dipsy diver, and on the back side we have a snubber (spray painted with flat black), and tied to a 6 foot 20lb fluorocarbon leader and attached to a micro 30lb snap swivel with a good ball bearing.
Our favorite lures to use with a Dipsy Diver: Worm Harnesses, Michigan Stinger Spoons, Shallow diving crank baits.

Nicely done. Have you experimented with different types of black paint to see which sticks best to the plastic? I want to buy some magnums and the black ones are more expensive.

Thank you! No I have not experimented with different types of paint. We have had these for probably 6 years and re coated once. Unfortunately, I do not remember the brand of the pain we used :(

Thanks for the vid. when using the dipsy depth chart when do you start the line counter. When the dipsy is at the tip of the rod or at the surface of the water.

Love the video,i want to get into dipsy diver fishing for wels catfish over here in europe,im kinda confused on how to get the dipsy diver to the depth i want it to be at soo im hoping you could help me out,could you please tell me what kind of dipsy diver should i use for trolling 1,6 knots aproxametly 22-26 feet deep?
@WeekendWoodsmen
@WeekendWoodsmen 3 года назад
I would recommend the size 0. That’s slightly smaller than what we use but let’s you get more line out to get it further away from the boat. The depth chart that comes with the Dipsey is fairly accurate. If you are trolling slower you can just let less line out.
@Thebazzman
@Thebazzman Год назад
I assume you can only get to the depth that a dipsy will go plus the dive depth of the lure you are using? Is that right?
@WeekendWoodsmen
@WeekendWoodsmen Год назад
We do not recommend using deep diving lures on a Dipsy. We will run shallow diving stick baits off it but the idea is not to add additional variable that can affect diving depth. The dive chart is fairly accurate and that what we use and then adjust from there based on where the fish are being marked and where strikes are occuring

Hey there, I know this was posted awhile ago , but do you use a weight or is it not needed with the diver? Thanks
@WeekendWoodsmen
@WeekendWoodsmen 3 года назад
No weights are needed you just follow the dive chart provided with the Dipsy. That will get you in the ball park and then adjust up/down from there to align to your specific setup

@@WeekendWoodsmen hello again!! Just wondering if I can use flashers/dodgers with the dipsy divers?

I have never used them and I don’t think they are necessary for walleye. If you wanted to use them I would guess it would mess with your dive chart

We are usually trolling between 1.8-2.2 MPH depending on what the fish want. The dive chart that comes with the Dipsey diver is pretty accurate in our experience.

Rod recombination for Dipsy fishing? Length, power, action, brand, model, etc. Any help greatly appreciated!
@WeekendWoodsmen
@WeekendWoodsmen 2 года назад
We really don’t get hung up on brand too much or pay a ton of attention to that. Pretty sure ours are 7’6” or 8’ medium power. You are going to want something that has some give and bend to absorb big strikes so I recommend a mid bend point (not ultra fast). Hope that helps, thanks for the comment!

Heading to Erie this weekend. Fishing for smallmouth. We drift or troll deep jerkbaits. Would you recommend a dipsy to get some of the shallower diving jerkbaits down to 25'?
@WeekendWoodsmen
@WeekendWoodsmen 3 года назад
I think that’s certainly an option although you would likely want to use a smaller size. I would honestly consider an inline weight for that application unless you need them to have the directional dive

It’s helps absorb the shock of the strike and also head shakes so the hook is like likely to rip out of their mouth.

Weekend Woodsmen I don’t yet, I always use downriggers on my boat for salmon in Alaska. I am headed to Lake Erie all next week for Walleye. I’ll have two electric downriggers but have never used or really heard of dispy divers until your video. I have no idea what depth I’ll be marking walleye. I am guessing 20-70’? I am not too familiar with the lake but have been reading some reports lately. Thanks for the reply.

Set on Zero is to keep Dipsy behind boat .. set on one L is to keep dipsy a little farther off the left side .. set on 2L keeps it a little farther more off left side and 3L is farthest off left side .. There are different depths you use by reading the instructions.. Plus speed !!

So im looking at 24 fish in the cooler,All caught using the #2 Dipsy with a 20 lb floral Carbon leader that is 18" long, Using Stinger Spoons. The smallest fish is 22" and we have 3 that are over 28" Caught them in 42' of water straight out of Mentor. We only put 4 under legal size fish back today. And only caught 3 trash fish (Sheep Head) They come home for the garden. So your 20 foot leader nonsense is just that.

Fished Erie, Minnesota and Canada for many years. Right now Erie is the fishing capital of the world. Theres an estimated 151 million LEGAL fish, close to 200 million total. There's maybe 1 million in Mille Lacs. Obviously Erie is larger like 47 times larger but 200 million walleye to 1 million, not even close no matter size of lake. Canada a lot of great lakes and walleye fishing, no one body of water even comes close to Erie right now.
