I had no trouble recording from my external MIDI keyboard through my audio interface MIDI input. But the only way to hear anything on playback was to use one of the Studio One virtual instruments. I scratched my head for a long time until I watched your video. After following what you showed, everything worked perfectly. THANK YOU !!!
Marvellous. After breaking my teeth a whole night to get my Roland JD-XA on studio One to recognize my midi output, this video FINALLY got me unstuck. The trick was in leaving the midi IN in "new keyboard" mode and the midi out in instrument mode. Setting both to keyboard mode or both to instrument mode did not work. THANK YOU 1000 X for providing me with the escape from this long problem. Video that dates, but still of public utility. Thanks.

Dear friend!!! Your video helped me a lot, for a long time I could not get the mod wheels to work on my midi keyboards. I use a Studio One DAW, Presonus Studio 24C audio card, a Nectar SE 61 keyboard and a Nectar Panorama T4. And finally I was able to do it! Now everything works great. It's all about synchronization. The most amazing and funny thing is that I am an engineer in cellular telecommunications networks, and even more specifically a design engineer for the development of circuits and setting up network clock equipment. Am using PreSonus Studio One Prime 3.1.1. Couldn't hear any sound from my M-Audio KeyStudio keyboard. I never thought this explanation would work as it seemed far too konfoosing. Followed your instructions and I can hear keyboard now. Amazing! Thank you!
Brian, your tutorial helped me. I was racking my brains out on how to send out midi info to the Roland UM-One. For a while I thought that the Roland usb interface was incompatible with my imac. However after watching your video I was finally able to get it working. Thanks again.
I've just google for like 4 hours. Then watched half this video just to find that the MIDI track actually has "INPUT & OUTPUT".... Cause my laptop screen is small and they just show 1 row which has Send to & Receive from option.... Now just resized the track and there's another row. A Silly thing took half my day! OK! This still works on Studio One 5. (Might be nice for Obedia to go back and update some of these). NOTE: To hear what you are recording you need to drag some instrument (Presence, Mojito, etc) to the track. After it is recorded you can change the out to your new MIDI OUT. To record the sounds coming off your keyboard you will, of course, have to take the audio out to a new AUDIO track. This is a great tutorial. I looked at at least 10 others that did not give this info. Thank you!

***** Yes your right. I'm actually trying Reaper at the moment and really like it, particularly the 32 bit vst bridge. Found audio editing in S1 nicer but getting used to Reaper now.

@@Obedia Btw, i'm not sure if it's me or a glitch,but when i went to make a mixdown of a song,i kept getting a file that would start,then cut out(like an abrupt mute)at the beginning of the song,then continue playing with a step in level change..NOW,i found out why after 20 attempts to rectify this: i had to turn off an automated delay on a track,which was muted..SO,my question is this: does/can having a track with automated effects,trigger a bug when u export a mixdown,regardless of if the automated track is muted? If so,why or is there a setting i've overlooked?

I've done all what this video has instructed me to. but when I create a new song select new instrument, and use presence there's no sound at all coming from my keyboard. However, I see there is a response from the input, but I hear no sound or output. any suggestions?

brian if i connect my keyboard at the back of the presonus interface well the old midi cables, what channel or channels will i select, bcuz i haven't slept three nights trying to get sound for the recording i made i am seeing it but not hearing it, no audio out
Is it possible to make the midi sound come out of your computer speakers? All i have is a computer with 2 stereo speakers and a midi keyboard (Acorn Masterkey49) and i want to be able to plug it in, load up Studio One, start playing and hear it come out of my computer speakers. Seems impossible!

Hi Brian, your videos have been helpful to me, but I'm having a problem hearing my Alesis DM6 electric drum kit. I set it up in the external devices as a keyboard and created a new track. When i bang on the drum kit i can see the track activity meter light up but don't hear the noise. Also i have the monitor button on. I just wanted to know if i can play and hear the sounds coming from my drum module? Also, can i set up my drum kit using the internal instruments such as the presence drum kits? Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks
Hey Brian, I recently purchased Audiobox USB with Studio One 2 and am wanting to record midi using my ancient ASR-X. I have a bunch of old beats that I'm wanting to dump onto studio one so I can edit them and so on. Problem is I can't get any type of connection between my Audiobox/Studio One and my ASR-X. So i'm trying to use my maschine mk1 and it will not show up in my browser. i went thru all the steps you said and i still cant use it. i'm using studio one 3 pro. i've seen several videos where they simply drag over the maschine vst over from the browser and it opens right up. for some reason i cant get it there.

I have no buttons reading "All Inputs" or the "none" below that. Not getting any audio out the keyboard at all, its very frustrating and convoluted. Why cant I just plug in and it is set to defaults for receiving a MIDI keyboard?

Great Info and well explained. Somewhat related question please: I imported Midi Files of a song into Studio One 5. Then I assigned instruments from the Studio One Instruments list (located in the Studio One browser) to the tracks. When I click Play, the meters are moving for each Midi track, but no audio from my Laptop is playing. It's just dead silent. Speakers are on, nothing muted etc, but no sound. I find your videos very interesting however, I followed the video and I am still not getting midi data passing thru my Korg PA50 SD. I am trying to use my new Behringer XR18 , Studio one 4 Pro, windows 10 and Korg PA. Midi data works perfect with Sonar but I wanted to try S1 and I having this issues. Any Idea?
Hi Brian. I am venturing inot Studio One and as you said in the video a little bit different than other DAW's. I come from Sonar X3 and I am trying Studio One 2. I got everything you said in the video. Records midi and sends midi but I hear nothing. Now thinking the way that Studio does things I gigure I would nee to rout the midi track to an audio track for it to play on my speakers. Am I off base here or what should I do. I have a sound module an old EMU Procussion that still works and I love the percussion sounds from it. It would be nice to be able to make it work in Studio One. Any advice? Thanks for a great video. Hey tis worked really well for me just one problem lol my noises dont make noises! im sure its an easy fix like it shows that the notes were recorded from my midi the volume bar goes up and down but i cant hear anything !?!?! any advice mucho appreciated thankyou

When I play my external device as a keyboard to use for example Presence instruments I have audio, but when I use my external device as an instrument to add external synths there is no audio although I can see that it is active. Hope this makes sense.
I have studio one 1.6 and maschine mikro. I have a lot of tracks sequenced into maschine and i need to be able to send these tracks to studio one so i can add vocals and finish up mixing. I've tried just about everything and it's not working. Can someone please help.

I have everything connected and StudioOne recognizes the input but I don't know how to get any audio. Am I connecting the keyboard sustain to the phones jack on the audio box? Or connecting my computer speakers straight to the keyboard or audio box? Sorry for all the questions, I don't really know anything about this and have no help. Thanks!
good informitive video brother. midi keys and audio interface. do they need the midi wires hooked up togeteher for it to work together or is usb each lone to lat top, ok? im just learning any help would be greatly appreciated
Most audio interfaces have both. I always use USB with my interface for the simple reason that I don't need to run a power supply from a 110 AC wall outlet. Power is provided via USB. And regardless what anyone's opinion is, there is no discernible audio quality difference between the two.
I have a MIDI controller that has MIDI IN and OUT. I also have a workstation that only has USB/MIDI. I would like to play the MIDI controller and drive the workstation "live" without latency. Can this be done using Studio One? I have a MIDI to USB converter to convert the MIDI controller to USB so it can be plugged in my laptop. So is the workstation. My laptop is a Windows 7.
I can get the headphones to work in the behringer device but I cant get the vocal to work so I can record & the behringer xenyx x2442usb device doesn't show in the external device I tried to create a new device but nothing show about the device I download the driver but the driver only got the head phone to work
Since the day Studio One came out, i have installed every version without sucess in getting my MIDI keyboard to play internal VST instruments. The MIDI light flashes when i play a key on the Hardwear but the instruments do not play. I have done everything i can. And i have been composing with DAWs since the first started and since way before those with the Amiga trackers. It just does not do it for me and each time i end up uninstalling it. My opinion, it is a junk DAW.
Perhaps you should get some professional help, as it's not a "junk DAW" and there's no reason yoru MIDI shouldn't work. You can call us and get a free trial: 323-319-4051 thanks
I have a M audio Keyrig49. Midi IN is working but midi OUT don't. So I can install the keyboard and is working, but not the instrument the midi send(I can choose only Microsoft synth) can somebody help me? Because of this I can not use the control link
My problem was that I could not see the control link in the left upside screen. This was because my laptop screen is too small to display it. It worked with a bigger screen.
Can you tell me which output to use? I don't know what each option is. The list includes Microsoft MIDI Mapper, Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, Audiobox USB MIDI Out, and Microsoft Synthesizer.
Dude no offense but your in a video named "How to setup MIDI output"...On your list there is one named MIDI OUT. None of the other ones have those 2 words in it. Take a wild guess.
Bastille, I tried them all and none worked, which is why I asked. I assumed each had MIDI output possibilities as they are all in the output dropdown and two contained the word "MIDI." I figured out what I was doing wrong, and it was unrelated- thanks for your input anyway. Just want to let you know, though, that saying "no offence" before a belittling comment (i.e. "Take a wild guess") does not negate your rudeness. If you don't want to cause offence, just be kinder.

Actually, I got it going thank you though. But What I was trying to say is. I needed to make a midi track that reads the sound from my Korg Trinity. I saw one of Johnny Geib vids and it answered my question.
