I have watched many many many R5 Ninja V videos and this one was Perfect! Included alllllll the necessary specifics in a short video. Excellent job, thats a sub.
Thank you Todd. Excellent video. This was all I needed to setup my Ninja with my R6. The HDMI cable did not work though. I kept losing connection constantly. Saw this on reviews on Amazon after I made the purchase…. Duh!! Tried the Smallrig cable and that worked out fine. Thank you again!
Todd, in my humble opinion this is the very best video i've seen discussing the topic of the Canon R5 setup to the Ninja V and the tips you provided are gold. You get to the point quickly and you express your opinions exceptionally well. You have a new subscriber, much success.
UPDATES SINCE RECORDING THIS VIDEO • Canon Log now includes options for C-Log 3 on both the R5 and R6. Avoid using C-Log 3 / Cinema Gamut with the Ninja V. Read more: bit.ly/3BlAewu • v130 firmware changed the name of "Overheat Control" to "Standby: Low res." (Shoot Menu 8). • Another good HDMI cable option is the Zilr Micro. Short length, HDMI 2 10-bit support. Check current price: geni.us/rPX1a9
I tried this setup yesterday and while recording my Atomos ninja would just just down and I'd have to click the shutter button to reactivate it. It actually disrupted the clips I was shooting. Curious if you have had this issue and what the fix is?
@@alexshotthese Camera Screen + EVF Out Turn off is ok to be set to some secs, BUT: There is a function that the R5 turns off after X minutes, deactivate that.
Great video and explanation. I found this really helpful with my R5 and new Ninja V. This worked well for me until it stopped. I haven't completely finished troubleshooting the issues, but the Ninja stopped recording 4K U footage beyond short clips. Looking at the Atomos website I discovered that the WD Blue drives are listed as untested/failed. I returned them and bought instead comparable priced Samsung 870 EVO SATA III SSDs and so far they are recording longer clips, though I need to discover what is happening with the Ninja menu not appearing anymore as it did before. Thanks again.
Such a useful guide! Between this and your newer one, I’m all set up! I did notice one other setting I had to change. On the same tab as Eco Mode, I had to go into the Power Saving section and disable Auto Power Off. I just bought an Atomos Ninja V+ (first monitor), and when this isn’t disabled, the recording just stops when the auto power off happens!
Todd that was just the video I was looking for! The LUT link seems to be broken and for whatever reason Canon has made it impossible to fine their LUTs anywhere on the WWW
Hi Todd, thank you so much for the helpful video. Do you always have to tap the record button on the Atomos Ninja V to record or is there a way to trigger the external recording on the R5 camera? Have a great day.
Todd, Thanks for the vid. This helped me and I am sure a ton of other people who were concerned with overheating and recording limits. Do you have any issues with the micro-hdmi and is there an attachment that you know of that converts it to full hdmi? That I think is the last barrier holding me back from purchasing an R5. Almost every micro hdmi product i have ever owned has had port insertion issues.
Great video for the R5, however, I just bought the R5C/Ninja V. Im a novice in the video game. Major issues trying to get them to connect and work. Would greatly appreciate any crumbs you could throw my way. Headed to UK in 3 weeks with my new rig, Hope to film the airshow/RIAT at RAF Fairford. Thanks a million!
Great video. Now I am ready to get a Ninja for my R5. Pl. review Ninja V+ for R5 when possible. I read that it adds 4K 120 and 8 K 30 options. Thank you 👍🏻
Love your videos but wondering if you’ve picked up the r5c. Would love a video like this for setup of the ninja v plus with the r5c. I don’t think it’s very different but I decided to get the r5c just because I am slowly venturing from photography to videography and am still new to the cinema menu as well as working on my technical knowledge for videography. Im enjoying the r5c for photos but the ninja + r5c is still kicking my butt on what settings I should be using
Todd, very thorough video. Thanks. I have one question, when I shoot surfing videos with my R6 to Ninja, once the surfer takes off on a wave, I do a half press of the shutter button to re-lock focus. Once I do this, it displays the R6 menu info on the Ninja video for the brief second I am half-pressing it. So all my final videos have a brief flash of the menu information from the camera at the start of each video. Is there a way to disable the menu info display on the R6 when half pressing the shutter? Thanks!
Very well done. I'll give these settings a try. Note your links dont seem to be working for me as I would have loved to make the purchase via them so you can get some referral love.
Great video! Thanks! I wonder now after watching this if the option for me would be to buy the R5 with the Atomos Ninja V or just go with the Canon R5C. I currently own the Canon R6 and it starts to send the overheating warning after 20 minutes or so, with I find so annoying. I really love this camera, but recording interviews with it, is so frustrating. Maybe I can buy the Atomos NV for my R6 and solve my overheating problem, as well as the limited recording time.
Hey Todd! Thank you for all this info! I just wanted to check if the Eye AF functionality shows up on the Ninja Atomos from the Canon R5 or R6? Because it isn't showing up on mine! Thanks!
Great video, appreciate the knowlegde. I am shooting the EOS R6 and was wondering in I can configure the Atomos to capture the video in ALL-I instead of the IPB options that the R6 only shows? I shoot surfing videos and primary use the footage for frame grabs, so I want the best quality frame grab where erratic motion is filmed. Thanks in advance.
Great video thank you. Can you suggest a variable ND for the Canon F2 28-70? Can't find one since the 95mm thread is 1mm pitch and not 0,75mm as normal filter threads. Thanks!
Hello Todd. Thanks for the video. Great information. Would you recommend the same coiled cable when using a Ronin RS2 and the R5? Or would that mess up the balance on the Ronin?
Thank you for this excellent explanation! Could I follow your instructions (mostly) to connect the Atomos Ninja V to a Canon G7 X Mark III? Would you change any recommendations for cables and other accessories? I'm a video content creator and have limited technical knowledge of these devices. But I can follow instructions! Thanks again!
I'm curios at 4:17 when talking about switching the "Legalize" button on the Ninja V in the Camera Output section, why you don't you just turn on the Log/HDR option? When you turn on the Log/ HDR switch to on the the Legalize button disappears entirely and Gamma changes to "C-Log" and Gamut to "Canon Cinema". Yours is set to Rec. 709 for both. Just wondering if you do this on purpose? should my Gamma and Gamut be set to Rec. 709? Thanks!
Very informative video, I have the R6, at first I could not find HDMI display under the shoot menu page 8 only to find you need to turn your top dial to movie mode to see the menu functions for video😂. Was happy to have both screens functional, especially for tap focussing on the back of the R6. The only negative is that you can’t record to your SD cards on your R6. You can only record to an attached SSD drive on your Atomos. Is this the same for the R5😢
Hi! Any chance you could put up a link to some test footage? I'm thinking of getting the Ninja V for the R6, but I'm not sure about the editing process. I'd like to do a check with the computer and editing program to ensure compatibility. Thanks!
Excellent video, Todd. Very educational and great production quality. I was just about to make my own video because I encountered some tricky situations on real shoots with the R6 and the Ninja V and wanted others to be able to avoid the same mistakes I made. However, you beat me to it! Having said that, there are some things that I would add: 1. The HDMI cable that you recommended is being recognized as HDMI 1.4 on the Ninja, not HDMI 2 (see the Ninja V screen at 3:52). If this is accurate, then the cable may not truly be HDMI 2 amd therefore not able to record 4k60. I recommend the official cable from Atomos, but it is pricey. 2. You don't mention anything about audio settings. If you don't select the correct input source on the Ninja, you can end up without audio! I found that out the hard way. 3. People should be aware that visual aids like zebras and peaking on the camera will be BAKED INTO YOUR FOOTAGE when shooting with the Ninja, so if those are important, they have to be turned off on the camera and enabled on the Ninja instead. I also found that out the hard way.
Damn! Never noticed 1.4 on the display. The cable claims to be HDMI 2.0, but my Ninja is apparently not seeing it that way. Thanks for pointing that out. Also thanks for the tips regarding audio and zebras/peaking. I once made the same mistake with the latter.
Great video Todd! Very helpful! Had a question for yourself or anyone reading. I am having issues with recording past 1 minute - I think my canon R6 is turning off or viewfinder is turning off which leads to the Ninja V saying no input after 1 minute of recording. I have eco mode turned off, i am wondering if there’s something i have missed?
@@ezymarquez5521 Hey Ezekiel, this also happened to me, but I believe that if you upgrade to firmware 1.4 it's no longer an issue. There's also a power saving mode that you can turn off (in addition to eco mode).
Hi Todd happy I found your Channel. Being that the Atamos records pro res does that eliminate the need to have to use a proxy to deal with the R5 Hq 4k codec. Would it then be easier codec to deal with?
Hi Todd. Thanks so much for your video. I like them so much. Question. Is there a chance that the Ninja v is able to record in 4K/120fps? since I have a R5 I want to take advantage of this too.
This video is fantastic, thank you so much! One question; the link you gave for the Canon Rec 709 LUT goes to the general download page for the R5. I don't see a download for the 709 LUT anywhere there. There's one "look up table" I see, but the description says "Gamma Transfer 1D LUT and Gamut / Gamma Transfer 3D LUT", nothing about 709
Is there a reason why you also don’t just toggle on the LOG/HDR switch on n ninja and use canon C log as gamma? It says to match your cameras output so if your in C LOG in camera should that be toggled on?
What does the Log/HDR Button do iu the Output Menu? Gamma and Gamut should be on CLog and Canon Cinema Gamut, no? I want to record CLog to the Ninja and was wondering if the Ninja converts it to rec709 without the toggle being on
Todd, how would you configure the atomos ninja v if you want to use 4k HQ C-Log3? in this case you would also use Legalize ?. the last question, does the monitor allow to use cinema gamut instead of 709/2020? Thank you very much for the help
Hi Todd, can I do the same with the Canon M50? I am looking for a way to bypass the 30min limit and I can't seem to find whether the hdmi output is clean enough on the Canon M50 to record on the Ninja V. Thanks in advance!
Hello @Toddy Dominey thank you so much for your tutorials videography and photography on different subjects. Are you able to help with a video on how to set up Nikon Z6 and Atomos Ninja V then matching this to Canon EOS C 300 for a better result. Thank you for your help.
Hello sir I did the same setting every mode on R5 work on ninja display but only video display is not showing. What do you think about it what could be the problem?
Hi, great video, but the video is not showing on the Ninja V , do you know why this would be. I have followed all the steps and got the cables you recommended. is there any reason this would happen?
