I remember one of the biggest selling points of the DJI 3D focus system on the RS2 was that it interfaces directly with your camera's video feed, therefore providing a more accurate(?) image from which the mechanism could then calculate accurate focus distance, establish active track subjects, etc. With the new integration of the LiDAR range finder, it seems to throw this concept out the window and if anything make calibration more complicated. Any info on how exactly it performs compared to the 3D focus system? Also, do you know if the 3D focus system is compatible with the RS3 pro at all?
this is false, it only measures the distance, it dosent use the camera video feed at all on RS2, but it still works really good when used correct with RS2
Was A LOT more iffy about copping the LiDAR but man, after watching this video (and knowing I can come back to it later) it has made my decision a whole lot easier. Thanks bro! #subbed
According to DJI it does work without gimbal. They informed since the Pro combo came out. Ref: Users can also directly connect the LiDAR Range Finder and focus motor to the camera and operate independently from the gimbal, enabling autofocus on manual lenses as well with an external battery. [6]
Does the Lidar work with the Rs2? Somebody tell me I would really like to know! Wow this is so expensive... 600+ Dollars is a lot for this thing... But it works really good. Active track is what grabbed me right away.
Hey Michael, nice video, great work 🎉 I run nearly the same setup, but which one is the Rod extension where you have the Dji motor put on? This small arm from the main rod on the right side to the short 12mm rod of dji? I can’t find it anywhere
You mention the most important setting is the installation distance. You also say the Sensor Marking Icon is found on all professional cameras. I have a Blackmagic 6K Pro camera and have not been able to locate a Sensor Marking Icon on it. Do you have any suggestions how to resolve this? Thanks!
Thanks very much for this nice tutorial ! My question because I just bought the Rs3 Pro combo with the RavenEye . Is it possible to use RavenEye , focus Motor and LiDAR all together ??? I just made some test with the LiDAR and works well but … how don’t know how you can connect also the RavenEye because it use the same port ( third one).. so for me … you should choose between RavenEye utility or LiDAR … Is it correct ? And what is the utility to use it them if it is possible to do it … Thanks for your return !!
Hello Michael, Great video and help setting the LIDAR. I'm rigging a KOMODO (APS-C sensor) with a 16mm full frame lens. Do you think I should enter 16mm in the LIDAR settings or use the conversion (full frame to APS-C) so say 24mm? Thank you.
I’ll be honest I don’t know for 100% certainty. For me I’ve been using the focal length of the lens without taking sensor size into account. But I’d say do a test with both and see if one way works better. I’ll ask my DJI rep as well
@@initialfocus Thank you Michael, curious to hear what DJI has to say. I have been testing various setups on my end and it seems that the focal length number you dial in is just a reference to know what lens is programmed in the LIDAR/RS3. What matters I think is the 1 meter - 4 meters focus calibration.
Thank you for this video, far more helpful than the others on RU-vid! One question, not sure if people will know the answer. I plan on using this Lidar with the Sirui Anamorphic Lenses. When you set the lens focal length in mm, is that purely in order to give c1, c2 and c3 rcognizeable names? or does it acually have to match the focal length... If so, then on non-spherical lenses, should you use the mm equivelant for the vertical field of view (one of my lenses is 35mm) or based on the horizontal field of view equivelant (21mm for this same lens)? or somewhere in between (28mm). Thanks in advance!
Great question. Did you find an answer. I have the Siriu Venus 1.6x kit for use on a A7S3 and FX3. Which works best....the stated focal length or the horizontal anamorphic equivalent when setting up the LIDAR for auto focus.
@amge4706 I havnt actually used my Anamorphics for another shoot since asking this question, but I imagine I will soon. I'm going to assume it was purely for labeling/identifying the settings sake
How does this differ from the older cheaper 3D Ronin Lidar system by DJI? And does this track the face, or the entire body? Does the person have to be dead center?
Hey! Great video very helpful I do I have troubleshooting question I hope you can answer: after calibrating the lens at 1 then 4 meters it just won’t save the setting. Is there anything I have to fix? It’s important to note that our camera doesn’t have a distance instillation measuring feature so we measured it by hand and have used different measurements just in case we measured wrong. Each time the calibration gets reset.
The DJI Lidar can be used without the gimbal, there are tutorials on RU-vid. Is there anything that could reset or erase the manual lens settings memory, forcing you to setup with the RS3 Pro again? or can you sell your RS3 Pro and use DJI Lidar forever on its own? Also, will the DJI Lidar work with small pancake lenses like the Canon 50mm nFD?
Hi, Could you please give me a link of that motor rod raiser part(s). I have bought Rs3 pro combo and lidar after watching your video. I have canon 5d mark iii with battery grip and lens is out of reach of thr focus motor. Thanks
How do you set the Lens Profile if you are using a zoom lens? I'm using the Sigma 18-35 1.8 and no matter what I set the lens at the calibration motor fails. Any suggestions?
You think it's a problem if it needs to interface through the gimbal? You can mount the gimbal on a tripod, and then you can go hand-held. What would be a situation when you don't want to use it without the gimbal? Genuinely asking. I had the same Q for the focus motor and then it hit me "why do I want the camera off the gimble" - can't find an answer to that.
Interesting setup. U mention using the LiDAR as close to front of lens (as you positioned it) to keep things in focus close up/more balanced, but then when it comes to measuring the LiDAR 'Installation Distance' from the sensor you used 75mm as the setting -surely this cant be right as the LiDAR now is placed towards the front of lens - or were you just detailing the traditional setup?!
Hello Michael, forgive me if this has been asked all ready but I really need to get the lidar rangefinder to work with the raven eye. I will be using it with the Tilta Hydra Alien to film a car scene with the 6K pro, so video transmission is a must! Do you know of any way for this to be possible? can you please make a video detailing the steps to make this work?
05:25 You mentioned the sensor distance markign is basically on every professional camera out there... but is actually not on any of the Pocket Cinema Camera series.... including the one in your video.🤔
Hey thankyou Michael. Trying to find your main gimbal video as I wanna see your thoughts on Active Track. Can’t find the video. Could you post a link? Thankyou
I now got my LiDAR but can't get a video image on the gimbal. Have already tried all USB ports, but the camera image remains black. (The Lidar Menue works btw.) Installed are the latest firmware versions for RS3 Pro and the Lidar scanner. Have you guys ever had this problem and found a solution?
@@FireFiresTheFire Yes you have to downgrade the firmware of the lidar scanner with the DJI app on the PC/Mac -> it must be the version where stable is behind it, a very old firmware.
@@StrandKorbFilm thanks for this.. somehow it doesn't give feed to gimbal screen but after fiddling with cables and replacing them to original ones, it works.. nevertheless it wastes a lot of time everytime I set it up
Hi! Love your reviews. I have a question, if you don't mind: I have the RS3 Pro + Lidar + Raveneye + Ninja V (for Nikon Z7ii). My problem is that I can't have this combination to work with active tracking. It works fine without the Raveneye, but as soon as I connect the Lidar through the focus motor it doesn't work anymore. When I go to Lidar settings on Ronin, it just keeps blinking with "Wide" button sliding from top again and again. As far as I understand to make that combination work I need the Multi-camera control cable. Is that right? Have you seen this cable? I can't find it anywhere :). Thanks in advance.
Great walk through thanks Michael. What voltage was the battery you used to try to power it without the gimbal? I've seen people manage to do this with a 7-16V power supply, and just one cable from the battery to the focus motor, plus the cable from the focus motor to the lidar. Lower voltage batteries don't give enough power apparently, but with sufficient power it can work without the gimbal.
A MacBook charger can push out 5.2v, 9v, 15v, and 20.3v (all up to 3a), so I wonder why you can’t plug this into a power bank or wall and have it work?
@@RealWorldReview I get it to work without the gimbal by powering the focus motor with 12V from a gold mount battery and daisy-chaining the Lidar to the focus motor. As long as it's calibrated in-gimbal it works fine.
I have watched this video over and over and I have everything pugged in like you. I can not get the Lidar to send tracking information to the gimbal that makes it move or 'track'. The RS3 screen on the back surrounds the talking head and when I pull the trigger once, the green box follows my face but the gimbal does not move. Thanks for the video!
what v-mount adapter attachment is that you have on the side on your gimbal? I'm looking to purchase one that attaches to the side mount that holds my neo core 9 mini v. mounts
This is great information! A question, I have a BMPPC 6K and I can't find the 'sensor mark' icon for the installation distance. Where is yours located? Thanks!!
@@initialfocus I just confirmed that the BMPCC 6K doesn't have it (I bought mine a year ago). I saw pics of the 6K G2 and that has it. I guess I'll have to get a best estimate. Thank you!
Have the same problem with a older BMPCC 6K. I have found some information that it should be 35mm from EF Flange. Can some one measure it with a newer 6K with the marks on? Should be the same as the older models too. Thanks
Hello Michael, could tell me how do you mount the lidar underneath the lens? Which accessories do you use ? I would like to use that setup. And also maybe you have the solution but how do you move your setup from a tripod to the gimbal and vise-versa without unplugging everything? Thanks
I do it by not using the side plate. My BMPCC is connected to the larger plate. This plate fits directly on a Sachtler (and other brands) tripods. But because the BMPCC is to wide to put it off you can do it by detach the tilt arm. There’s a knob at the bottom of this arm. After that you can slide the BMPCC with plate and slide it on a tripod. Disadvantage of this method is you have to balance again.
New sub here! Amazing work on both videos for the LIDAR range finder. There is a lack of BMPCC 6k / 6k Pro content related to this gimbal, which is crazy considering it increases the usability of our cameras so much. Would love to see more DJI AF tests and with that DZO lens as well. Thank you for doing what you do! :)
Hi Michael, can you please tell me if the Lidar will work with the RS2. I upgraded the lidar firmware and my Ronin app is up to date. Im hitting the focus calibration and it tells me first calibrate lens.,when I go to calibrate lens it tells me calibrate focus motor first. the motor and the lidar are connected to both the ports you mention in this video. The 3rd on top is obviously for raven eye which is also connected. The video you put up is with the RS3. So I'm confused and don't know where I'm going wrong.I'm using Samyang 24mm T1.5 MK2 with my 6K BMPCC at the moment. I may be doing something wrong with the iPhone ronin app.I'm going to go it another go in a day or 2.But if you know anything on this then I'd really appreciate that.
Hey, the lidar is only made for the RS3 Pro. Not even the regular RS3 will work with it. So previous versions like the RS2 will also not work. I know they came out with some cable that allows you to use it as a standalone device which I guess you could rig to the rs2 somehow but yeah you’d need that cable set
Michael i need help, my lidar C1 keep blinking red even after i did the firmware, i am running dji rs3 pro with, rs2 pro motor ( i am not sure if thats a problem) but funny thing is even if i disconnect the motor lidar C1 still blinking red which indicates firmware update, i done it multiple time, revert to old firmware no luck, did the update again no luck still keep blinking red, cant delete any lens profiles since i had 3d focus prior to lidar upgrade, any help????
@johnmeric492 I have the exact same issue. I tried to use the RSC2 Focus Motor, but the red C1 light keeps blinking continuously. Even when I connect the LIDAR to my computer for firmware update, the red light keeps blinking. I uploaded the new firmware, and same issue. How did you resolve your issue? Was the LIDAR the issue? The Focus Motor? The RS3 gimbal? (By the way I am running mine on A7S3 and FX3. I appreciate any feedback. Thanks!
@John Meric Figured that might be the issue. Just received my new RS Focus Motor today. Haven't had a chance to connect it yet, but I am sure it will resolve the issue. Thank you for the feedback.
How you can use it With the Sigma? I got the setup and Its Not Working With a 0,8 rubber Ring, cause the Sigma has infinity Focus? Do you guys have a Solution?
@@lonGaah try putting a couple of cable ties under the rubber ring and set them as hard stops. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WZbzcJhuquM.html
Hey! I have connected everything as instructed. Tracking works, but AF (autofocus) does NOT work. Updated the firmware but nothing. Lens focus goes back to the same position and doesn't move form that position when I try to focus with the lens. Any ideas?
On the RS3 Pro page in the LiDAR section there is video and a paragraph showing the LiDAR and motor working without the gamble. Instructions on how to set it up are in the LiDAR User Guide on the Downloads page. It was a selling point when I ordered mine.
Hey Michelle! As far as I understand, it can only be used with lenses that have a strong mechanical connection between the focus ring and the lens focus system. I mean, most of today's Nikon zoom lenses have no restrictions in the focus ring. It has a mechanical link between the focus system and the focus ring, but when I reach the limits of focus in the focus system, I can rotate the focus ring. As a result, I can not calibrate the focusing system. I'm right?
Also if I am using a Sigma 18-35mm lens with my BMPCC 6K do I have to calibrate each of the zoom focal points 18mm, 24mm and 36mm or does it even matter for telephoto lenses?
@@scooteractual the sigma won’t work with the LiDAR. It doesn’t worked with focus by wire lenses. Only cine lenses. I tried it and am bummed. I got it to work with my Rokinon and it was pretty impressive how it tracked. Not enough for me to keep it. We are talking about a $2000 rig. Manual focus on the RS3 will do just fine for me.
What do I do if my lens doesnt have a focusring and i have to attach one. When i start the calibration and it gets to the endpoint, i starts shaking and i have to cancel
It works without the gimbal. I think the error you made is that you tried to power both devices; where if you just power the motor and go from the lidar to the motor via the 2nd port, you get power in the entire system. DJI released an official video for this.
Is the side motor strong to pull focus on really stiff lenses? I had to sell my Tilta nano cuz it would shut off on stiff old vintage lenses. Was a waste of money.. :(
I have the nano as well. I guess I don’t have any crazy stiff lenses because the nano works fine with all my IRIX and DZO. Sorry I haven’t used many vintage lenses with follow focus systems.
Has anyone had issues with the Lidar rangefinder wobbling around while in active track? I was using it last night just fine, then later in that same evening it started getting pretty bad wobble whenever it was coming to a stop, but typically OK when stationary, and totally fine when actually moving around tracking a subject. I have no idea what i changed that made it start doing that. it's well balanced.
What is the effective focus distance you get? The claim of 14m is BS, seems like only 5 - 7m. In fact 7m is pushing it. And it doesn't really track objects, only effective for faces.
Is anyone else having issues with the active track? I can get the lidar to autofocus brilliantly but active track isnt working anywhere near as good as it did on the Raven Eye. It looks like active track is working great in the demo video from DJI so im a bit concerned about what's wrong with mine?
I have the exact same issue. I tried to use the RSC2 Focus Motor, but the red C1 light keeps blinking continuously. Good video, it’s sad that Dji has such a crappy policy with their product by making everything proprietary (i.e. this lidar that can only work with the gimbal vs standalone ; the manfrotto QR plate that is not compatible with fluid heads and vice versa, …) and obsolete after a year (why make the lidar only compatible with rs3 pro whereas the usb-c ports are the same on all three RS gimbals? ; goes on for most battery handles ; drones batteries, …) I like the product alone, but overall I am tired with Dji.
The LiDar works without the gimbal once you've calibrated the lenses. You don't need the gimbal at all after that. Does this mean you need the RS3 Gimbal to set it up? Yes. Is that any different from using a mac? No.
@@unknownsoldier4825 Better stay unknown when claiming idiocies like these. Tell me in what way buying a Mac/iMac for a given price forces you to buy something else 150% the price to set it up? Get out of your clichés and dji fanatism and learn before you talk.
Why are you so aggressive and threatening me while you’re at it? This is disgusting, how you responded. Typical keyboard troll warrior. I am reporting this to RU-vid as threatening language - meanwhile. I own an RS3 Pro and LiDAR camera, so I’m speaking from experience, genius
@@yuan-jiadude - it wasn’t an idiocy 😂 even DJI’s official channel shows how to setup the LiDAR without a gimbal. The video on this channel made the mistake of using a battery under the voltage required by the LiDAR / motor. The vmount battery I use on my Komodo has a dtap which I connected to the LiDAR with an unregulated dtap to USB C and it works perfectly without the gimbal. Maybe do some research on your own before jumping down someone else’s throat and making an ass of yourself.
For the LiDAR to work off the gimbal, it needs 16v. Found this “tutorial” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UJvoQQykBt4.html However, you probably figured this out already… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Is it true that it has only 3 presets?! Only one question... WHY????? WHYyyyyy... Why not 50, why not 1000... How many kb does this profiles weight?! Even if megabites, it is just no words... Just why, it is just stick in the wheel, why should I want to buy expensive lidar and pair it with overpriced gimbal to use only 3 lenses or calibrate it every single time I want to change a lens. Just make it 1000 profiles, just w t f... What is wrong with you dji...
