This is the tailored version of a patch pocket--including a pocket header and lining. The pocket and lining construction will create a turn of cloth to conceal the outer edge seam---the proper way to construct a tailored patch pocket. Additional demonstration for the optional flap. This is a beginner to intermediate level sewing sequence but produces a beautifully crafted patch pocket for any garment.
Any fabric weight can be used, but wool works very nicely with the turn of cloth and the rounded corners of some pocket styles.

Hi :-) lovely tutorial! just a question: the seam allowance along the main fabric pocket is the same as along the lining? ...I am asking this because I have been taught that you should put 1 cm along the main fabric (curved sides and lower edge) and 0,7 cm along the lining ...

Oh thanks :) Yes, the seam allowance for this technique is the same for both the pocket self and pocket lining. The technique you're talking about is pretty much the same as this technique because we still end up with a lining piece that is slightly smaller than the pocket self. Then when we sew the two pieces together, it forces the bigger piece (the self) to have a turn of cloth, ensuring the lining cannot be seen from the face side. Your technique achieves that through adjusting the seam allowance. This technique achieves that through adjusting the base pattern. There are always so many ways to get to the same goal in sewing :)

I have a couple of garments that rip at the corner here 21:19 and they tear the main fabric… do you have a “hack” to fix tares like that?

Yes, this is a super high-tension spot on the garment. The main body of your garment should have a proper weight interfacing to give that area structure and stability to house the pocket. Sometimes the whole front panel of the garment is interfaced or just the area surrounding the pocket. Using a good interfacing will prevent that from happening with future garments. You can even apply double layer of interfacing just at the top corner area of pocket. As far as fixing one that has already ripped, the only thing you can do is back the area with a sturdy patch fabric (or fusible interfacing). The fusible works well for these areas that tear because it glues down all the yarns and helps keep it from raveling further. Once you get the back of the tear reinforced, you can stitch over the tear with machine or hand stitches. You can try to be as inconspicuous as possible with hand stitching, and obviously same-color thread will help here. Some people like to use this repairing opportunity to create a lovely hand stitched pattern to advertise their handwork. Sashiko stitching works well for this. The best thing you can do is catch the tear when it starts so it doesn't get big. "A stitch in time saves nine!"
