We've now pieced together a few squares, and now we're going to sew our quilt squares together. We'll be doing this without any sashing, and you will see how clean the seams look when we're finished. You'll need a needle and thread, sewing machine (optional) and some basic sewing notions like sewing pins and scissors.

Oh my gosh, I love how you are doing this. Some may think the hand stitching is too much, but I like the combination of machine and hand stitching. Thank you for your great tutorial.

I agree and I find doing hand stitching can be very relaxing

I am handicapped, in that hanse sewing is just about impossible for me. Why not glue it in place with a permanent bond glue? Or does anyone have any other alternatives for connecting the batting?

What a good way to do it - thank you so much for posting this video. I have to say that I couldn't take my eyes off your poor thumb, that must have been so painful. Hope it's better now.

Love it. This is the way I have done a couple of xmas quilts that I hand pieced and then hand quilted each square and then joined together.

I like the way you tell only the important info and go on to next step. When telling about how to sew the batting together, have you ever thought about gluing down the batting without having to stitch it?? I'm going to try it, but I do want to thank you for giving me this idea about Joining after quilting each block. Hunting all the video's for QAYG w/o sashing has been a challenge. You have made my Day.....tnx

Thank you! I have not tried adhesive, but I know others use adhesive for the batting. Good luck, I hope it works for you, and thanks for visiting our channel.

I was thinking the same thing! the same stuff I use to join pieces of batting together, I bought it by the yard and cut it into 2 inch strips.

Thank you. This video explains the process so clearly. I saw the modern UK quilter, Chris English, quickly explain this method. He will piece a full size quilt into 4 or 6 sections and machine and hand quilt each section then join together to make a full size quilt. Then he will do some machine or hand stitching near the joins to further hide them. So much easier than wrestling a queen or king size quilt through a domestic machine. You explained this method very clearly so I feel ready to give it a go with a king sized quilt.

Sorry I kept running out of time. I wasn't criticising your method just pondering. After you joined the first two pieces the batting seam allowances lay on top of each other and you trimmed them so they met in the middle matching the seam underneath which made sense. I was just having a lazy moment and wondered if it would work as successfully if instead of joining them together you cut either the top or bottom piece of wadding of at the seam allowance and allowed the remaining piece of wadding to fill the gap. I can see though this may cause the wadding to move. Loved the tutorial.

I'd spray it or use that stick adhesive to rub on the material, then lay the batting on it. If using spray, just cover what u don't want spray on, lay batting down, then spray batting & lay material down. Then top stitch...

I love this process of sewing. your squares together with out binding of each block.thank you for this video.all the decorative quilting in each little quilt square. just in the center is perfect, leaving the outer edges to bind the quilt. this is the first video I've seen like this. I'm going to make all my quilts this way.

Like the video but after you piece the squares together in a row how do you see the rows on? You’re going to run into the seam.
@KnotsKneedles
@KnotsKneedles 5 лет назад
You would leave allowance open, and sew rows together the same way the squares are sewn.

Great tutorial. I have been looking for something like this to show me an easier way to "Quilt as you go," especially for my bigger projects. Thank you so much for providing this information. This is easy to understand, easy to do with machine or by hand, and I think it's going to one of my favorite techniques to use from now on.

For the last step couldn't you simply use another all over fancy stitch to join the edges of the squares together. This means each square would be framed as well.
@KnotsKneedles
@KnotsKneedles 7 лет назад
Not sure what you mean, but the stitch would need to be the same on the front and back of the quilt, and I'm not sure it would evenly follow the seam on both (if that makes sense?)

Very interesting and different..I really like the fancy stitches you put on each square, such a nice, personal touch, I think. Lovely patterns on the materials, so old fashioned looking. I'm just a very early beginner to quilting, and I will definitely be coming back to your vids for part of my quilting education..you are an excellent teacher, very clear and easy to follow, with some very unique ideas. I like that! Thank you for a great video!

What about using fabric glue or fusible tape, this is really time invasive.

Would it work if after you've joined the two squares together you trimmed the batting on one piece off at the the seam line and then let the batting the second square fill the gap? I'm not sure if you would be able to secure it to stitching and if there would be movement if you didnt
@KnotsKneedles
@KnotsKneedles 6 лет назад
If you do it the way I show, there won't be a gap. I don't understand what you are trying to accomplish. I have only done it this way, to avoid extra bulk. :)

Can you sew by the machine instead of hand stitching? I have hand problems. T hank you
@KnotsKneedles
@KnotsKneedles 6 лет назад
Sewing by machine will create a stitch line on the back side which may affect the looks of the quilt. Sewing by hand hides the stitches. It's your choice.
@geansanders1233
@geansanders1233 5 лет назад
good video BUT yall never explain how much that you leave on the edges that is unquilted
@KnotsKneedles
@KnotsKneedles 5 лет назад
The edges that you are overlapping, were sewn at a half inch seam allowance. One raw edge is folded about 1/4" and placed over the other raw edge. So the finished overlap seam should end up about 1/4". If you want a larger overlap, then you would allow for a larger seam allowance. There are no special rules, depends on your quilt squares and the look you want. It's just my way of doing it, in the video. Thanks for watching. :)

Thanks for the video, is there any reason why you choose not to use fusible interfacing or heat press batting together to fuse the batting pieces and instead use sewing them together? I was just wondering.
@KnotsKneedles
@KnotsKneedles 8 лет назад
I guess if you aren't going to quilt stitch, then you could use fusible interfacing. You could also use the fusible batting to hold the batting in place for stitching. it's really just a matter of preference. There are many ways of doing things. This is just one example. Thanks for visiting our channel.

Great video. I have been looking for a video on this method of quilting for a long time. The only thing I'm not clear on is how much seam allowance you leave around the quilting on the square. I would guess that these are 5 in squares, did you leave an inch, half inch?
@KnotsKneedles
@KnotsKneedles 8 лет назад
Thanks, and I used 1/2" seam allowance with 1/4" fold over, hand stitched. :)
