This easy to sew stopping tote is a hybrid between my supermarket shopping bags and the expandable shoe bags I've made before.
These will make a great addition to your next craft store, and are a great substitute to single use plastic bags.
I've also rearranged my Ikea pegboard, and now have a fabulous assortment of threads neatly sorted.
Here's where I purchased the pegboard hooks if you're in Australia www.etsy.com/a...

Thank you for this tutorial. I really like the cotton bag & would like to see a lined version. I made up a saying for myself when doing French seams: Do it wrong then make it right. It helps me remember to sew wrong sides together first, then put right sides together to finish the seam.

Im no pro but just thinking here. My thought for a lined bag (given that it’s folded over at the bottom like that) would be to sew/start with 2 pieces of cotton cut at about 37x19 and sew right sides together, turn right side out and top stitch. (That’s now your 36x18 bag fabric.) Then make the bag as instructed with lining already intact. Not sure how the French seams fit in, too much bulk? I’d love to hear if that sounds right. Top of the bag might need its topstitching done after assembly is complete. Does this make good sense? Im pretty new to bags like this.

I just organized my thread by color recently on the wooden peg rack, I’ve put cut straws on each peg, taller than the thread spools so that the bobbin can safely sit on top of the spool. I’ve tried numerous ways, and this works the best for me. My odds and ends bobbins sit on top of each other on a straw also. Your projects always keep my attention from start to finish.

I always learn something useful when I watch these videos. Aways. This particular bag I'll likely not make as I prefer a boxed bottom shopping bag with more durability and a wider base because I pack them full. Aside from that, it's brilliant the way you use a continuous line of sewing along the top. I would have never thought of that! I struggle with organizing and I'm constantly re-revising/re-thinking my sewing room (it doubles as my home office), which eats away at my actual sewing time!!! But now, I need to go comb my hair 🙂 Thanks, Christine!

Your thread display looks fantastic. I've not used a plastic bag for shopping since we had to pay for them, and of course I've sewn quite a few since and I always carry a couple in my normal bag.. The shops that still sell plastic bags can charge what they like and as far as I know they are (or should be) biodegradable.

Thank you Christine, you made the process of combining the 2 look easy and with great results. I love the look of the smaller profile but extra width when needed. Being shorter and older I tend to get wrapped up in the bigger bags when trying to get things in, lol. I was going to put snaps at the top to keep it closed until needed but now I don't think it is needed. I may do some with the wraps and snap for easy storage until needed like your other bags from a while back. I got goose bumps when I saw the title and had to make a cup of tea to sit and see what you had come up with. Love them and your peg board looks great. I have recently switched back to peg instead of drawers, much quicker and easier. Thanks again for another great one.

Another great project Christine. The pegboard looks so organized too 😊 Question about bag strength: how sturdy is the cotton bag compared to the upholstery fabric bag? Would it be less suitable for heavy groceries for example? I’ve often wondered.
@ChristinesHomeAffairs

Loved the video, Christine! I'm an organizational freak too, though you'd never know it by looking at my craft room🤪. Love this hybrid bag. Hubby's been wanting me to make him a bag to carry a plastic case he uses to carry cables to his gigs and I think this design will work perfectly. How would I go about making sure the case will fit inside the bag? Just measure the circumference a make sure my fabric measures more? Hugs from Nevada, Cathy❤
@ChristinesHomeAffairs
@ChristinesHomeAffairs 2 месяца назад
Cathy, you'd use the same measuring system as boxed bags. say case is 4" across x 8" high x 6" wide. You need fabric that is 21" long x 12" wide. The 21" is twice height plus double fold and a little extra for movement, and 12" would be for the 6" plus 2" each side for the fold plus seam and wiggle room😁

Hi Christine, question for you. I've been gifted several pieces of vinyl and made your expandable shoe bags as gifts. Well, someone asked me if I could make them an expandable shoe twice that size, everything the same, one center zipper etc. They said they want it for traveling. They pack their things in little bags then fill the suit case. She said the idea that these fold flat when empty would be a huge help to her. Can you picture 2 shoe bags side by side and create something? Help give me some creative juices. Gwen in Indiana USA
@ChristinesHomeAffairs
@ChristinesHomeAffairs 2 месяца назад
That's an interesting idea. If all they want is an expandable bag, then you should just be able to use a much longer piece of vinyl/fabric, and make the bag the same, it'll just end up wider. There's also the bridle bag which is much longer but narrower😁
@salinwa7108
@salinwa7108 Месяц назад
A question please… How do you determine whether to measure 3” from center for the handles *or just find the center* on each side. Sometimes you find center and here you measure 3 inches. Thanks 😊 Also, does this way of slipping the strap in and then folding it up work with the poly webbing?
@ChristinesHomeAffairs
@ChristinesHomeAffairs Месяц назад
There are no real rules as to where you put your handles, or how you measure them. Sometimes I'll use different measurements depending on what I think a viewer might want to see. Folding your webbing should work fine. I do it with mine as well😁

Christine, Christine, Christine! You were doing so well, giving us the needle type the needle size and stitch length and then you forgot. 😂 I’m guessing you are using polyester thread . And even though your pegboard with your thread looks nice and organized thread manufacturers always state or most of them say your thread should not be exposed to any type of light and to keep covered because of dust. And I think you asked at the beginning of the video if we wanted to see this same version with a lining and I would definitely like to see that. I just think it looks very unfinished doesn’t have a lining, especially if I’m going to give these as gifts, let alone sell them .

You mentioned that you didn't want to many different types of bags in your shop - I saw a documentary about Costco and one of the things that make them so successful is that they don't waste space on different brands. They only stock one brand of most items - they said that it is less stress when you don't need to look through 5 types and make decisions, it saves them valuable warehouse space and helps keep their costs lower. I know if I go in for mustard it doesn't really make a difference what brand it is.
