How to Sew: The Blanket Stitch | Hand Sewing Tutorial for Beginners | Corner Stitching

The blanket stitch is a wonderful hand sewing technique to learn, as it can be used to great effect as decorative edging on various projects including blankets, dishcloths and fabric ornaments.
The usual materials to use blanket stitch on are non-fraying fabrics like felt, fleece and wool. The stitch is best at joining and decorating raw edges.
In this lesson, I will show you how to join 2 felt edges together, including how to stitch neatly around a corner. The demo begins at 3:20 in the video.
Thanks for watching!

hello, walked into a cloth store first time today for a project and saw some cute cotton cloths, got a wild idea to see a blanket for a very lovely 2year old baby girl, who came with her family to my island after fleeing Venezuela. Wanted to give her something beautiful to anchor joy into her inner child. This stitch is something I fondly remember from my own childhood blanket & wanted to make it. So Wonderful to find your video💜✨🙏🏼 can't wait to make the blanky for Nina😊

Interesting, but how would you do it if there's only one layer of fabric?
@RokoleeDIY
@RokoleeDIY 5 лет назад
It would be the same technique in that case, the only difference being that where you have secured the thread at the beginning and end of the sewing will be visible on one side of the fabric. If you want to hem the single layer of fabric and then add blanket stitch over the hem, I have an example of that in my updated video : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9fMsHU1qfMI.html Hope that helps :)

is this stitch good as a weight bearing stitch?
@RokoleeDIY
@RokoleeDIY 4 года назад
I would say it's not the best for weight-bearing, because although it can be quite strong if the stitches are small, weight that pulls the seam apart can create little gaps between the stitches along the seam - the blanket stitch doesn't completely seal up the seam unlike something like backstitch for example.
@TheOnyxLegion
@TheOnyxLegion 4 года назад
@@RokoleeDIY awesome. Besides the backstitch what other styles of stitch would be good for say a dog leash that might have a big dog on it
@RokoleeDIY
@RokoleeDIY 4 года назад
@@TheOnyxLegion Well leather leashes would use saddle stitch, but for fabric leashes I would just recommend the backstitch to be honest - using small stitches and multiple lines of stitches to make absolutely sure it holds :)

How well would this work for faux fur? The luxury shag kind of fake fur, to be precise.
@RokoleeDIY

Hmm to be honest I don't think it would be the best choice because I imagine it would trap the fur under the stitches and make it look messy. Sorry!

@@RokoleeDIY i heard that if fur got trapped under stitches then use a needle or something to pull it out I think you could pin the two fabrics together while making sure there isn't any fur to get in the way of stitching, so i may try both Btw the tutorial was very helpful, but I'm sure you heard that already.

Thanks! I would recommend hemming the muslin because, as you say, it would be likely to fray. I have a different video showing how to hem using blanket stitch: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9fMsHU1qfMI.html so you would fold over the edge of the fabric once or twice (then press with an iron) then add the blanket stitch over the hem.
