Very helpful and clear, as you always emphasise which is right / wrong side, skirt / lining. The tips on how long the gap in the lining should be and the distance of the stitching to ths zipper are excellent. I am trying to replace a ripped lining in a skirt and your video is one of the few that is so clear on this critical area.
HI I see your one person that know how to put a zipper in the correct way. I see people on RU-vid trying to teach others how to sew and they don't know the proper way to attach a zipper. It's sad. They call themselves taking short cuts! okay. Good to see your teaching to correct way of doing things. Thank you for sharing your skills. Later.
Rosalind Hamilton You're welcome and thank you for watching. I believe short cuts should not be developed until you know how to do it the right way. And if the short cut doesn't give you a quality result, what's the point.
Your so right. I cannot understand how anyone could get on RU-vid trying to teach some one when they don't know what they are doing. The sad part of that, is if there is a beginner they don't know that the person trying to teach sewing don't know themselves. Good your doing it right. I'll send friend to your site. Thanks for sharing again.
This is the best video I've seen on attaching a lining. I'm following it step-by-step today for the first time today. My past attempts other ways have been messy... this really is a great way. Thank you!
Katrina, thank you so much for your tutorial. I am making a skirt which has no instructions for lining and now feel confident that I can do this. Your explanations and video quality are absolutely superb. Thank you so much for sharing your technique. Happy sewing days......x
I love the simple way you explain it, specially for beginners like me. Thank you!!! Thank you for not talking so much and thank you for going straight to the point.
Thank you for your comment, Clarissa. All good points that I'll remember for future videos. I'm also glad my video was easy to understand. That's always my goal.
Perfect, thank you very much. It's just what I was looking for. Not only learning about attaching the lining to the invisible zip bit, but also how to attach the top part of lining to a skirt. A double wammy. Fab. Thank you.
I am a beginner, and videos like this are EXTREMELY helpful! Saving this one to come back to soon, as my first project is a simple A-line skirt. It's wool, so I need to line it. THANK YOU for a great tutorial!!
Hi Katrina! Thanks a million. I've been out of the game of sewing for awhile but I was starting a new lined skirt project today and came across your video. AWESOME!! Keep up the good work!! Tricie
WOW!! I actually learned how to sew a zipper with lining from watching this video! Your instructions were very clear, and the visual demonstration matched your instructions perfectly! I enjoyed watching this tutorial. 10/10 would recommend.
Thank you so much for a clear, well presented instructional video. You have a really good style of teaching that is easy to understand. I'm just getting into sewing and enjoy making things for my wife. I'm going to have a go at your technique. Very best wishes from North Wales (UK)
colin101981 Thank you so much, Colin. Your wife is very fortunate to have you making things for her. I wish you much success in using this technique. Thanks for watching.
I'm currently trying to sew a lined skater skirt, and this was SUPER helpful! But I was wondering, would anything about the way you sewed this change if you were going to add a waistband? Thanks!
No, Jay, not at all. I would do this the same way with a waistband. I added a waistband to this same sample skirt in my last video, "How to Sew a Waistband that Will Never Roll or Wrinkle. Just make sure you machine baste the lining to the skirt at the waist before you attach your waistband. It makes things easier.
great video. I have a skirt pattern I love but want to make it in white linen and It really needs a lining! could not remember how to do this!! its all coming back to me, thank you!
Although I've never done it, it's done in ready-to-wear so I'm sure you can. It's probably easiest on dresses that don't have a separate bodice, (like those with a fitted bodice and a gathered skirt ,for example), because the zipper is usually put in after the front and back are sewn together. I would say, put in your zipper like you normally would, before sewing the front of your dress to the back. Then sew your lining center back seam from the bottom of zipper opening down to the hem. Sew the lining to the zipper like I did in the video. Then, with right sides together sew your front to your back at the side seams and shoulders. Then sew the front lining to the back lining by sandwiching the dress fabric, to the lining is on the outside. You'll have to move the dress out of the way so it doesn't get caught in your lining seams. Sew the rest of the dress. I hope this is accurate. This is what I'm picturing in my head. The sequence would vary depending on the design details of the dress. I hope this helps and I'm glad you liked the tutorial.
Thank you so much!! I am sewing a dress with a gathered skirt right at this moment...I've already attached front to back and set in the sleeves. For this one I'll attach the lining by hand. I am so ready to cut out a new dress and try the steps you've outlined! Thank you again... :)
Thank you for the video. Could you tell me if that can work with a skirt without a waistband. I can't seem to figure it out myself. The skirt has a 3 inch facing band. I would like to make adjustments at the side seams before the lining goes in. I have been sewing for 30 years but just recently have been getting requests for custom made clothing. Thank you again.
