I was given my 1st cowboy hat and although they shaped it in the store, I’m finding after a few days of wearing I want to reshape some areas. Thank you for showing how to do this at home!
I often find that it takes 2-3 times of shaping to get the desired look in your hat to settle and stay they correct way. That’s is why I like to keep a costumers hat for 24 hours to make sure the shape is correct and settles in nicely before I send it home. Thanks for checking out the channel! S^C
This video is phenomenal. Thank you for showing us how to shape every part of the hat and in the correct order. You make it look so easy and natural; I'm anxious to try it out myself. You are an excellent teacher and have a great pace and voice for these videos. I look forward to watching more of them!
Very interesting and informative. I'm new at wearing "cowboy" hats and this video is extremely helpful. You are not only skilled at hat shaping, but also at explaining the steps in a clear, understandable way. Thank-you!
I love this, thanks! All the detail is great and very helpful. I do have a few felt hats I need to reshape or touch up, and now I know excactly what to do. Cheers!
THANKS! I just just reshaped my Stetson Royal Flush Beaver Fur hat. I was worried id have to take it to a hat store but the steam did the trick! I appreciate the video, you just saved me a ride across town and a few bucks!
Fantastic tutorial! I received a nice Stetson Skyline 6X in chocolate a few months ago and absolutely love it, however, I think it’s too upright/taco’ish and want it reshaped to a more open, shovel squared front brim and have been afraid to try and do it myself. My gift was not cheap but I think this video might give me the confidence to try it! 🤙🏽
Thanks to your awesome instruction I just successfully reshaped my son's Stetson 4x Buffalo Felt hat! I cannot thank you enough for this tutorial brother.🙏
Great in-depth tutorial, and great teaching demeanor. My problem is when the wind is high and facing into it, how to keep the front brim from flipping up, giving a "Corporal Agarn" effect (that reference really shows my age - LOL). I had purchased a hat stiffener online but all it did was leave a white residue on my black hat. I have more dark colored hats (black, sage, brown, tan) so this is not acceptable. Any suggestions? Also, how do you keep hats from color fading? The tan hat referenced originally was sage colored; I replaced it but do not want to have numerous tan hats when what I want sage! Again, any suggestions are appreciated.
It is definitely difficult to maintain the color of a hat, no matter what color it starts as. Part of the aging process definitely discolors the hat. As much as you can try to keep your hat clean and out of the sun when you are not wearing it. As far as the stiffener is concerned, I have found that some commercial stiffeners do discolor hats, that is why in a lot of cases I will use Hairspray. Shellac is the other route to go. I personally have not used it. However, I know that is what they used to stiffen a hat in the first place, so I would assume that it would not discolor a hat as much as other products. Let me know if this helps! S^C
Just got a new 4x felt hat. I like everything about it except for the hard crease in the brim. I much prefer a more rounded rise. First attempt at shaping the brim, the hard crease refused to soften. Not enough heat? Need to repeat working it? Thanks for the very clear video.
That is definitely a tough situation. I find if you can’t get a hard crease out of a brim, after repeated attempts with a steamer, it may be time to completely iron the brim, flat, and start over. Sometimes those creases will only be fixed if the felt is super heated and pressed flat again. Hope this helps!
Clarc King, I personally haven’t tried this. Usually that shape is pressed in with a lot of heat and steam that would be hard to duplicate at home. As far as shrinking a hat, steam does work but you have to be careful when you size it down not to damage the hat. I will make a video showing how to shrink a hat at home here in the near future! Thanks for checking out the channel! S^C
@@StartupCowboy I bought a second hand hat that fits great and it is also a high quality hat, however I would like to reshape it. please let me know I can reshape it.
I’m not sure what a vaporizer is but usually as long as you can get a good steady and continuous line of steam that should work. As far as how long to steam it completely depends on the quality of hat and the temperature you can maintain from your steamer. My bet is that each hat would need 3-5 mins of time in and out of the steam to truly soften the felt so it can be cleaned properly. Hope this helps!
Thanks for the question! If it’s done properly the first time, it should last for quite a while. That is also dependent on the quality of the hat. You may have to touch it up from time to time depending on the wear.
Caleb, Yes this does work on wool hats. The success will depend on the quality of the wool and usually the amount of beaver or rabbit fur is blended into the hat body. Thanks!
I tried this a few years back using a different video as a guide. All went well but my hat went from dark green to a weird shade of brown. How can I prevent that?
I honestly haven’t hear of this happening. All I can think is that the hat has been dehydrated by too much heat or the hat has lost some of its dye. To prevent this I would say use less heat. As far as the hat that changed color, you might have to consult a custom hat maker to see if the felt body could be dyed again. Let me know how it goes!
@@StartupCowboy well it doesn't matter because the hat is too small for my head anyway so it's just up there on the shelf. Thank you for the effort, sir. Appreciate your work.
Great question. The bound edge brims that I have came stock on the hats when I bought them. One is a Resistol and the other is an American. Many hat manufacturers, make hats with the bound edge already on it.
Here are a few I found. This brand is one of my favorites, and are in a really great price range. teskeys.com/products/serratelli-pecan-bound-edge-6x?variant=39834302054463&gclid=CjwKCAjwgZCoBhBnEiwAz35RwqPuJuuyGXHVIhCn60jqHCw1E1QQJ85n2Pfimw5rL2HtrypwOqND2BoC_4EQAvD_BwE teskeys.com/products/serratelli-chocolate-bound-edge-6x?variant=39834309525567&gclid=CjwKCAjwgZCoBhBnEiwAz35RwkcBmOyi7DyeRryhhv65sgfQTWoB15W6gdc0nWKprtUuPH0qR63GlxoCIiQQAvD_BwE www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEwierIGZyq2BAxV0TX8AHVXUD-AYABAKGgJvYQ&ae=2&gclid=CjwKCAjwgZCoBhBnEiwAz35Rwu-cC4kDNQuR6Dy25zzaXERs1Kfw5bfOHNtrxXf-diBMIdnxTlFa4RoCIKMQAvD_BwE&ohost=www.google.com&cid=CAESbeD2tzhwcf8i6N73sst0mF05VJnhAw3MduEi9fM36uKv-NyGMDAc28zAxpYNmWrUAGUPTHbT-zIZRD9l3mKUgqaiSIpwpcl42rFlY7q9yr2pOQvqvvQD-IBMjXO8ucp738AOmbkTzjO67QGP_Yw&sig=AOD64_0H_pkdG15pagQ7GSG6LgPpCQBs9w&ctype=5&q=&ved=2ahUKEwj9q_WYyq2BAxXJl2oFHStPCSwQwg8oAHoECAUQEQ&adurl=
That wide brim reminds me of the Flying Nun. It's a funny trend I would never wear. I don't think people understand what it means when you say cowboy hat. In order to be a cowboy hat it needs to adhere to established shape. Once you give it a new shape it's no longer a cowboy hat. That flying nun hat is not a cowboy hat. . A Derby is a Derby because of it's shape. Give it a different shape it's no longer a Derby.
