Hi Dr Matt...thank you for the great video! I'm hoping you may be able to solve a riddle that's been vexing me for years! About a decade ago I bought an old stub tail 8/8 near wedge razor at a local antique store for the price of a song. I knew it was old because of the interesting shape, the straight horn scales and type of tail it has...it looks to be from about 1800-1820 or so...but I couldn't identify the maker. All it says on the tang is "G.B" and under that "BEST STEEL" in a very simple punched stamp...no cross or anchor. The shape and stamp is unlike any George Brittain I've ever seen. I wish I could send you some pics because it is quite a unique piece. I'm sure you'd find it very interesting.

Good video, Dr. Matt. I do have a few questions for you, as a newbie honer: if you were to recommend only one set of stones for someone to use, what would they be, and what grit? How important is lapping the stones, and ensuring they are flat? How often do you have to flatten the stones? Thank you for the help, and great videos!
@drmatt357
@drmatt357 4 года назад
I lap the stones before every use so it's important. I would start with the Naniwa 12K super stone. Watch the GS sixgun video in the description on how to use it. Will need a 400 diamond plate to lap too. As you get get better, get a Shapton 8K then a 5, then a Chosera 1K. But start up top first until you can get consistent edges then get an 8 if needed and so on. You can get all this on the Chef Knives To Go link in the description.

@mytech6779
@mytech6779 Год назад
I haven't tried it yet, (I normally use soapy water or very light oil, depending on the stone.) but Boride abrasives recommends di-polypropylene glycol. It is water soluble and generally nontoxic(used in various cosmetics) more viscous than water but less lubricating than say a 10w oil. I generally prefer very light oil(eg ISO15 / sus 70) for final honing of edges to avoid flash corrosion of the fresh edge, but a leather strop likely makes this redundant as it runs dry and may have a bit of oil based conditioner in it. Oil is better at preventing the stone from loading if that is an issue.

So all things considered, when honing your razor you recommend, to tape the spine of the razor ? I always thought, in other videos, that when honing they say just lay it flat (on bare spine) and use, but with my thing, over time aren't you actually wearing away the razor's spine ?
@drmatt357
@drmatt357 Год назад
Yes you will wear the spine and make it thinner but you’re also making the blade narrower and that will preserve the bevel angle as designed.

@TWalsh2
@TWalsh2 4 года назад
While the general consensus is to use a 30 degree angle I think it should be less perhaps 20 or 15 if you can manage it. The steeper the angle the more burn as you're digging into your face. At 90 degrees you'd be just scraping, at 20 it should be more of a glance. Start with that and if there's no improvement then it might be the blade.

Nah! There are some knife guys who subscribe to that but razors are an entirely different animal and it's not totally true with knives either. maybe you dont want the spine to be flat or over time the edge wont be smiling anymore and you'll be honing only the middle and never the ends. I'd flatten this thing too as it's easy to control but it's not the right way to do it IMO. The spine should remain thicker in the middle and honing should be done on a narrow stone and/or differential pressure
