A quick demo showing how I sharpen my pastel pencils. A method fine if you don't have a huge number of pencils to sharpen like me and you want more control over the type of point you get.

I'm going to use this technique. I am just starting again in pastels. I bought a good sized set of the Pitt Pastel pencils and a $22 multipoint sharpener. The sharpener ate up a full inch of the first pencil but I got a nice long point, less of a point on the second and third pencil then it completely stopped working on the fourth pencil. I got out my little hand sharpener and got them more or less sharpened. I could have bought a bigger set of pastel pencils for the money I wasted on the sharpener.

TY. So glad to know someone smarter than I, has also cut their finger, while sharpening. 💛🙏
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt 5 лет назад
Haha! It was cutting foam board with a ruler and the blade slide over the ruler and sliced my finger badly. Very silly for continuing with a slightly old blade. I won't do it again!

Nice to see someone who is not afraid of knives!. I use a file, like you would use for filing metal. Mine is 12 long. It works, in my opinion, better than sand paper. I do use a knife occasionally such a when I´m in the field. I have a video on it if anyone is interested.

@@unboundbytiffany As I mentioned, I use a large metal file. You will find it works better than a nail file because of the large surface. IMO. Thanks

@@PassionForLifeGallery totally agree, wonderful idea. I have sandpaper galore but hate using to sharpen my pencils and pastels but man, I have so many jewelry files, that's an absolutely fabulous idea. Thank you lovelies

@@PassionForLifeGallery and sorry maybe you misunderstood me, jewelry files are not nail files. Lol they're industrial, metal files.

Hi Emma, i love your work. I struggle with sharpening, I use a blade and nail file, as I cannot seem to get a sharp tip with just a blade

excellent !!! but this craft knife sharpening works well only for sturdy pencils like PITT or carandache...some times it works well for carbothello otherwise soft leads like derwent or gioconda or conte leads falls miserably!!!
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt 5 лет назад
Agreed, the softer the pencil the more difficult it is to sharpen. I use Pitt and Carbothello and it works great. In lots of cases a sharpener might be better, but this was about showing the scalpel technique. Thanks for watching :-)

So this technique isn't for everyone, but I like to use a chisel. I like it, it's safer but also easier to pare the wood. On the downside, the weight of a chisel blade needs respect especially with more crumbly pigments, but it's worth experimenting if you find the time.
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt 5 лет назад
Cool hadn't thought of that! I think you'd need a very good and sharp chisel and a bit of practise but whatever works for you :-)

You make this technique look easy but, so far, I seem to have trouble rotating as i go and always end up with a wonky point!!! 🙄🤪 Will have another go, now I’ve seen you do it!

I remove the wood okay, because I sharpen some pencils like this too and I enjoy it too. It's very therapeutic for me sharpening pencils with a blade but every time I try to make a point with the blade I end up breaking the lead so now I sand it in an artists sandpaper block instead

What is your favourite brand of pencil for details at the end?
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt 8 месяцев назад
I use a mixture nowadays. I still use a lot of Faber Castell. But I like some Carbothello colours too. I like a Generals White 4414 for pure white and a Bruynzeel black. They all have pros and cons, but I tend to choose certain colours from different brands.

Not my favourite job in the world but I tend to only have to sharpen about 10 at any one time. If I were solely a pencil artist I think I'd use a good sharpener!

THEY.KEEP.BREAKING!!!!!!!!! I’m pissed and wasted half a pencil already!!😡😡 I tried everything and I’m starting to blame the pencils’ quality!!
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt 8 месяцев назад
Some of the softer pencil brands might need a softer touch. Try a sand paper instead if it breaks too easily. It can also be that a pencil has fallen on the floor and the lead inside is broken all the way down.

Aren't you worried about the massive amount of dust you put into the air with this method?
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt Месяц назад
I often do this task outside to avoid adding extra dust to my studio. But yes there is a certain amount of dust to deal with when using pastel too. I work beside an open window and clean regularly. I have a video about dealing with this part of using soft pastel which has lots of tips at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SCBT2OtlKEQ.html
