LOL at all these people.. He's giving you more than just a how-to. Thisi is you all have a better understanding of the sharpening technique and the angle when sharpening. I learn a lot. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for posting this! I had previously tried to sharpen my scissors with a whetstone just like a knife, and didn't realize I needed to follow the angle on the blade rather than sharpen to a point. Now the scissors are cutting very badly because I changed the angle of the cutting surface. Your video shows me what I need to do to fix my scissors! Great explanation!
Thank you for taking the time to explain with thorough visuals. I absolutely LOVE videos like these, that not only explain “how to” but also “why” we need to do specific things! After watching, I now feel confident to sharpen my scissors and make my little hobbyist life much easier.
Thank you SO MUCH for the way you took the trouble to show what you're talking about UP CLOSE! I've been watching every freaking scissor sharpening video, and read non-video instructions, but---okay, call me dumb!--I was not grasping the exact mechanism of it til this video. It has been really annoying that I had this mental block I guess! But this was the perfect way to explain it and I'm very grateful to you, I just had to tell you....thanks again!
To put it simple, he talk about "how right angle can help you sharpening scissor faster". he said you can unscrew the scissor and sharpen it like regular blade or if you can't then you can sharpen it with road stone or other sharpening tools
Having declared my dissatisfaction with this sharpener last night ru-vid.comUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ I thought about the problem some more. It occurred to me that I might be undoing each attempt at achieving a sharp edge by the repeated attempts. So, I tried to clean up the unsatisfactory result by honing with only positions 3 and 4.Miracle!! A really nicely sharpened chef's knife, more than enough to handle my needs. Admittedly, it did not reach professionally sharpened razor-fineness, but it is now significantly sharper than it was. A bout of breaking down carrots convinced me. So, major apologies to the manufacturer, Amazon, and all happy and potential owners! Follow the directions: don't buy it if you have ceramic blades; and don't overwork your knife blade.
Thank you so much for this. My favorite pair of scissors got really dull and because of your video I was able to sharpen them. I'm very grateful to you.
To create a seven-minute video on how to sharpen a pair of scissors without actually demonstrating how to sharpen a pair of scissors is quite an achievement.
@@nestingstarling5895 to all those who think he didn't demonstrate how to sharpen the scissors. He showed you how in two separate ways. Why can't you see this. Hmmmm not sure but I know what to do now.
This video is simple easy straightforward into the point without all the added BS to confuse someone like myself who wants to learn how to sharpen scissors quickly properly and effectively the first time. I love scissors and knives and have hundreds of both and I'm so excited to tend to them all now. Thanks you rock! Amy
My mother was born in 1922. They never had these fancy gadgets then. Mom showed me that in order to sharpen scissors all you needed to do was to cut a few lengths off of sandpaper. Not sure what grade she used, but I know it sure worked. Still use that today.
Agreed! Not only did he show how to but he also gave an explanation. I thought I'd be bored watching it since it randomly popped up but I actually learned something from it 😁
yay fixed it and I didn't even need to sharpen them. I have Fine crafting/quilting scissors that couldn't cut yarn very well. So I came looking for a sharpening video. When you said to take them apart I grabbed my tool kit and promptly screwed the screw in more and tested them on the yarn and it cut like butter. I had been running my fingers up and down the blades thinking they didn't feel damaged. Now my other pair are pitted and need to be sharpened but I mostly use them for paper or fine wire I know bad me. So thank you for saving me some time and now I know how to fix the other pair if I ever get around to it.
Yes I totally agree with the time you took on the demonstration! Holy cow I finally get how to do this! Every video I watched showed all these fancy tools etc for expensive scissors but I JUST wanted to liven up my $6.99 pair from Walmart 😁 and this worked! Yay!! Thank you!
The back side of the blades are cut concave. It shows when the light crosses the back side of the blade. Scissors can be ruined by cutting the back side. If the blades are very dull, get them sharpened professionally.
You are going at it the hard way. Just get yourself some sandpaper 50 grit (coarse grit paper for rough sanding) then some 100 grit (fine grit paper for fine sanding). You rake the 50 grit and fold it in half. coarse side facing outward. You cut the sandpaper several times all the way across and wipe down the blades with a clean soft towel. Then you take the 100 grip paper and fold it the same way. Cut just as many times as the 50 grit. Then wipe the blades with a clean soft towel and do it all over again. Your scissors will be razor sharp.
I see that this is an old video but wanted to let you know that it is still helping people, thank you!!! I will now have sharp fabric scissors that I do not have to pay someone else to sharpen :)
Great how to Jeff, most ppl just throw them away when they get dull. A easy way I use to clean up the edge when I notice them starting to dull is to take a piece of emery cloth (or fine sandpaper) and fold it over with the grit out on both sides then just cut strips through it with your scissors, of course it depends on how dull they are but it doesn't take long, give it a try next time you have a pair starting to dull.
There is an old trick my pop taught me. Use the Spark/Flint Wheel of your BIC lighter and run it along your dull blade a couple of times. It is a fast fix and keeps the works going till you can do a proper grind on your tools :D
Great video, thanks! Lots of weird information out there on this, as well as lots of different types of scissors (I found out). Do you not create a bit of a burr on the edge from sharpening? If so, do you hone that off or let the action of the scissors take care of it?
Thank you so very much! I have a pair of spring loaded scissors that are easier on my arthritis that became dull. I saw a sharpening stone at Dollar Tree, and thought I’d sharpen them. Thank you!
Great vid, like your style, not like another I saw where the guy was like it was some religious experience. You get right to the point, didn't complicate things, this is the angle, follow it, BAM! Following your instructions, I just sharpened my first pair successfully, passing the wet tissue test I saw on another vid. Thanks!
Thank you so much for sharing this video, because it's been let's see, a YEAR! lol to show me how to use ,this AWESOME sharping tool that he has had for year that he must of bought off the tool truck man at work. It's called the WORKSHARP and I have to say it's a pretty neat tool, it's a single tool with three different stones to sharpen blades with and on one side that's brown material that's like a corkscrew texture. If the tool had instructions of course , I would KNOW! So when the hubby finally does come up to me and says, hey you want me to teach you how to use that tool for sharping stuff now. I'm going to be like yeah hun SURE! 😂😂
I dont want to undermine your point, but at the very least, hockey skate blades are ground in a concave upside down u, obviously not as extreme though, I'm not quite an engineer, but I believe it has something to do with channeling melting ice (water) through to increase speed and improve bite
Cmmon folks, use your imagination. He explains things in good detail. Do you really need to see him do a full sharpening for you to wrap your straining brains around it? He showed you how to put the blade to turn stone, now it's your turn.
thanks but mine look different. if I look at the blade it has a flat edge it's like if I took flat metal cut 2 let's say 1in wide and 6 in long screw a screw half way up and made them open and close like scissors. it's 2 flat ends crossing. you no what I mean these are prob cheaper but ones a nice set. how would I sharpen. would I do all 4 edges cause there's 2 on each. thanks for video it does help alot for that brand. god bless
Best video of all. At least I didn't have to watch you cut paper to prove the scissors are sharp. Paper is rigid and will not scoot away from the scissors like a string or piece of cloth will do.
Question how do you sharpen a broken scissor since these scissor are broken due to the fact that my friends were playing scissor darts with them and now their like a pair of knives?
I have never succeeded in sharpening scissors until just now after watching this video. I had tried a steel file this morning and failed once again. After seeing this I put a flat honing stone in a bench vise and ran the scissor blades carefully across at the right angle. B.T.W. these are cheap scissor which do not have a screw to take them apart! After a few minutes they were taken from time to throw away to pretty good.
You can't simply put the inside of the blade flat on a stone to grind it as scissor blades have a bow to it. Unlike haircutting shears which are thin enough you can bend it flat against the hone and it springs back, with regular scissors you will just end up grinding the up at tip and near the pivot, leaving the middle unground. You have to hone along the blade at a 90 degree to the edge of you stone. You don't have to follow the factory angle. If you want more performance out of your scissors, you can make the angle more acute. It is a trade off between durability with tougher materials vs cutting performance.
Thanks the video is awesome. Question- do you have video on how to sharpen scissors that are really messed up. Someone in my family (duh..hubby TRIED to sharpen my scissors. Now I have 10 pair (all sizes) that I need to fix. My scissors were not cheap. HELP PLEASE!!
I did that very thing! I tried to sharpen each side like they were knives doing each side. I ended up making them WORSE. After countless videos on how to fix my error,, this one made me "get it" and actually worked!
I make knives as a profitable hobby and also do leather work too, I'm popular at Christmas time around the family. lol It's best to make angle guide using a small piece of some kind of hard wood. A lot of people don't have a good sense of sharpening angles and need a jig to help. Just take a small piece about 1 inch high and 2 inches long and file or grind the angle of their scissors and just hold the blade up against the angled side of the wood. You would be surprised at how many knife makers that can't sharpen their knives by hand.
