I'm a retired paramedic. One thing I didn't skimp on was my trauma shears. I had 3 pair of German made shears. I always carried a pair of cheap bandage scissors on me, just in case a nurse asked to borrow my scissors. Nurses know that paramedics always have scissors on them. Paramedics know that nurses usually want to borrow your trauma shears to cut paper. I got tired of asking what they wanted to cut with them, and then arguing over why paper was bad for them. That's why I carried the cheap bandage scissors. Then everyone was happy. I wasn't entirely convinced that paper would really dull them that badly, but I kind of needed them to stay sharp. You need good, sharp scissors to cut through boot leather, when necessary. If it was a biker's boots you cut off, you also needed a good place to hide. LOL!

40+ years ago, I trained as an upholsterer before I trained as a joiner. We used sharp scissors on a daily basis. We sharpened them by hand as one would a chisel or plane. THEN...out came the 'serra-sharp' scissors; self sharpening scissors designed for the upholstery trade at first but probably found other outlets. They had one straight blade and one serrated blade. They worked somewhat but after extended use, still needed hand sharpening on the straight blade - they were not much good at sliding through fabrics. I now always sharpen scissors as we did back in those old days; make sure they are not slack, have an equal slight curvature on each blade so that they cut from heel to tip and have a very keen edge from heel to tip. They should sound as if they are rasping against each other as you cut - and they should cut cleanly right to the very tip.

Or you can always just get stroppy, and remove the burr that way. When I was a kid, I once sharpened my mother's scissors with a file and an improvised strop. I told her it wasn't perfect because I didn't have good files or a decent strop. A few weeks later, she gave me a good set of metalworking files and a leather strop. She said it was just to say thank you for sharpening the scissors, but the implied message was that sharpening scissors was now one of my tasks around the house. 🤣

I’ve been sharpening knives for years having been a meat cutter. From there, everyone I knew wanted me to sharpen their knives. Inevitably, scissors were showing up. I refused an attempt to sharpen them but I always wanted to try. Because of your detailed video, I’ll be prepared for the avalanche of scissor requests from family. Thank you for putting this information together.

Thank you for this! I have jewelers files that I literally use for anything, including resin edge filing. Just did a quick few swipes along the edge and my scissors are back to cutting through ribbon without making a huge mess or having me come close to rage quitting! You are a lifesaver. I am also a new subscriber, because as soon as we can set up our permanent studio where we are moving to in a couple months or sooner, I am inheriting all my dad's woodworking tools. The only thing we have to buy is a good lathe, and I have a friend who is going to see about getting that for us when the time is right. ❤

Yet another interesting sharpening video that has inspired me to try something I have not done before. I generally use mass-market scissors, when I can find ones that are TRUE Left-handed ones. (Many that "imply" that they are left-handed, are merely normal right-handed scissors but with different, supposedly "ergonomic" handles. Unless the blades are reversed, they are still very difficult to use by those of us in their "right" minds 😅. While growing up, all three of we boys knew that any scissors in mother's sewing room were strictly off-limits. Our sister was exempt, because in due course our mother was teaching her about sewing.

My brother obtained a pair of WISS “inlaid” sheet metal shears that were close to 100 years old, that needed s lot of love. (If you can find some Wiss Inlaid, snap them up, the steel is the best!)I removed the nut and bolt, flattened the faces on my DMT dual diamond plates and then filed the bevel with my diamond files ( a steel file would not touch them!) The nut had been peened over, and removing it stripped the threads so I had to make a new fastener out of an NAS 5/16-24 aircraft bolt and high temperature lock nut. When I finally got them back together, greased and adjusted, they cut thin paper, and close with the sweetest “whisssss” sound. Good for another hundred years of conscientious use. My wife and I trade haircuts and I sharpen those shears with the fine diamond file ACROSS the blade rather than along it. This creates very fine grooves that catch, hold and cut the hair instead of letting it slide out of the tips. When wood is ground into paper pulp, fine bits of mineral end up in the paper that WILL dull scissors. My Dad used to keep my Mom’s sewing shears sharp, and woe to us if we used them on paper!
