Very informative video, Nick! What you were saying about time trials is exactly the same as with strength training. Testing a max is time lost that could have been spent training. Not just in terms of tapering and properly preparing for the test day, but also in terms of the residual fatigue effect that it creates afterwards that takes substantial amounts of time to recover from. Pretty cool to see the parallels here!

100% agree with advice beginning at 02:50. I think this applies to multiple sports disciplines as well. I think athletes need to fine tune their own body to find their own ideal "fight weight." What works for some may not work for others. Nothing wrong with getting input from multiple sources, but ultimately careful trial & error will likely yield the best results.

In September of my freshman year of HS, I ran 5:48 in a time trial. It was my first xc season and first few months of consistent running. I kept running consistently and ran 5:02 for a 46 second PR/ PB in March of my freshman year in my second all out 1600 ever. Now I’m looking at a possible sub 4:40. (Also, if you happen to care, all of these are 1600m times, not 1609m times). Especially if you’re a new runner, one of the best ways to get faster is to train consistently. Also, what Nick said about not time trialing too much is super important if you’re not running for your school (it’s different for student athletes because the season entails running up to 2-4 races per week for the top guys in the busiest part of the season). Sub 5 is a great goal for serious but less than professional runners

Nick, how’s the instrument rating going? What was your body fat % when you hit 160? By the way I have been doing kneesovertoesguy for about 4 weeks now! I have many surgeries on my right knee. ACL repair, shattered tibial plateau, broken fibula and now arthritis. I have favored my right leg for sometime, but I am now getting some of the mobility back and much less pain than I had a month ago! You would have a great time working with this guy to help runners with knee pain! ATP Philip from GA! Come fly, and some long bicycle rides are on the menu!
