In this video we will show you how to shave a 14 bolt and take you through the steps involved in installing the TMR Customs 15 bolt shave kit. This modification gives you more ground clearance and shaves the ring gear as well, although TMR also has a kit where the ring gear doesn't need to be shaved.

Today I realized that Jeremy is one of my regular customers at the grocery store I work at. He's a really nice dude, right along with Matt, who I've seen there too. I think we should see some videos of Jeremy's Jeep, it's pretty sick. Best wishes - John

Nice video guys. I just wanted to mention the dangers of using some brake cleaner solvents and welding. Some folks may not know it can be toxic if the wrong brake clean is used. Phosgene poisoning is no joke. Any cleaner with Tetrachloroethylene should be avoided if you'll be welding the metal afterward. Thanks for the great vids and info. You guys are awesome.

No, the Ford Sterling 10.5 is a different axle. It is similar in that it is a full floating axle, but different manufactures. (they also made a semi floater version) GM made the 14 bolts.

I don't know if they are balanced new, but I am pretty sure you can't see the wobble in them either. But honestly your guys videos are awesome and its great to see you getting out there and showing people what you can accomplish by just trying. love watching your videos.

I gotta ask did you guys put new bearings on the carrier or did you guys just try to clean them out. Has he put it back in and drive it. Any issues with metal shavings and such still in there. Love how you guys used the carrier and a grinder to shave her down. Pure genius and cost savings for the person trying to save money and spend it on cool stuff not labor.
@Garth2011
@Garth2011 5 лет назад
I have similar concerns however, these are mostly off-road only vehicles they build so much of the tenderness in "clean" and "Perfect" doesn't apply to them as much as a vehicle that will put tons many highway speed miles on it. The videos are only a snapshot in time so we would all be guessing why reusing the pinion bearings after being infused with metal shavings/dust that likely didn't get fully cleaned off. Interesting either way.
@michaelroloff2804

Wow, very brave... i would never been so cool to cut the casting-housing, weld it and stick it up together like that. All the dust and gunk from angle-grinding and the welding pickles...very tough! I'm pretty sure that these bearings in trhat diff are now toasted neither the crown- gear and pinion are worn out.

The carrier bearings were never meant to spin that fast. I don't recommend using the grinder to accelerate the ring gear like that. At the very least, don't let it spin so fast. Good way to toast the bearings. Not to mention those bearing were probably getting packed full of shavings from the grinder as they were spinning.

Just a few questions? How will the ring gear stay properly lubed?Why were the Axel tubes not completely welded to the center section? Grinding on the ring gear, what affect does this have on it's Rockwell tonnage hardness? Spinning the ring gear that fast and only WD-40 as a lubricant the bearings would start to gaul?

good tech. I have to say though, that truss looks like it was welded on with cat shit. also I would have used a high nickel rod for welding to the differential and used a heat blanket to slow down the cooling and keep your weld from cracking. another correction: not all 14bolts are full float. there is also a semi float variety.

Don't do this at home is right. My transmission and hydraulics instructor in our local trade school warned against rotating masses like this suddenly seizing up and doing some really crazy stuff. I am not sure if it would be enough rotating mass to spin your axle housing and pumpkin off the bench, onto the floor, across the shop and through the wall if those bearings happened to seize up. Probably not. Maybe a great episode for Myth Busters.
