Dude, I've been shaving with a DE razor for 8 years and thought I was doing it right. Now it's even better! All the nicks are reduced to almost nothing, 0 irritation. Thank you

I have been wet shaving with a safety razor for about three weeks and I just had the best shave of my life. Thank you Nick for your videos they have been very helpful. For others getting started here are a couple of my thoughts: 1. Be patient, my first shave was rough, it takes a couple weeks to get comfortable. 2. Start with a soap that lathers easily, I have had luck with Razorock and TOBS, I had a tough time getting a good lather with Mitchell's wool fat soap. 3. Put very little pressure on the blade. My neck is sensitive and I had a hard time getting my neck shaved without problems. Go very very light and do not go against the grain at least out of the gate. 4. Pay close attention to not braking your wrist when shaving to maintain a consistent angle and blade contact with your face. Thanks again Nick!

I grew up watching my dad and grandpa with their safety razors and brushes. My hubby has taken to using electric, but he hates them. He also hates how much it costs to buy disposables. He said a couple months ago that he really wants a good razor, so I've bought him one for father's day. I didn't go crazy on price because I dont know how he will react, but found one with great reviews and bought a few packs of blades to last him quite some time. He wanted a nose/ear hair trimmer about a year and a half ago and I went for an old school all metal twisty blade one, and he loved it, despite his initial confusion. Hopefully he will be happy with this! If so, maybe I'll get him a fancier one later one!

Hi Nick! After 10+ years of using a straight razor (and minimizing and embarrassingly large collection of blades, soaps, creams, balms, etc.), I did my first safety razor shave today - with awesome results! Switched, as I was tired of the stropping, honing, etc. required for a straight. I'll save those for special occasions. Thanks for your video! Razor - Merkur 34C w/ Merkur blade Soap - Razorock XXX Brush - Pure Badger Tonic - Lucky Tiger Balm - Proraso Cypress and Vetyver After Shave - Fine Classic - Platinum Kept the lather hot in a dual chamber scuttle. Three passes - WTG, XTG, ATG Thanks again!

Thanks a lot for this series (and your other RU-vid videos) Nick. Yesterday was my first time shaving with a DE razor, shaving brush and soap and like you said it did take awhile. There is definitely a learning curve trying to angle it to get an optimal shave. Took about 45 mins and my shave was not "baby smooth" but my face did not hurt a lot as it does when using cartridges so that was a pro. I'll keep practicing until I reach perfection using the tips you've prescribed in this video.

Great vid. I've heard that hot water strips your face of oils and recently just started using warm water and I think it's definitely true. So be careful with temperature I might advise. Never knew that it was about reduction btw. I always thought the job should be done first pass due to the sharpness but glad i came here to learn that it'll take 2-3 maybe even four total passes. Thanks nick

I just done my first shaving with a safety razor, and I must say that it was a very pleasant experience. I was expecting it to be harder than it actually was. Considering I have very sensitive skin, it scared me even more, thought I could just butcher my face, but that didn't happen. Cut myself a few times though. It wasn't a perfect shave considering it was my first time, but it was quite good, I enjoyed it a lot. I definately felt that the blade just glides over the skin much smoother than those cartrige razors. All it takes now is to get used to it and practice, one day at a time.

I just did my first ever wet shave, after years of shaving with Magic which is similar to Nair. I used a Merkur 34c, Satin Tip The Purest, and sample of Cattie's Bubbles, Personna razors and coconut oil for the pre shave. Wow not bad for the first time. No cuts and a very tiny amount of stubble left after two passes. Thank for the tips.

I purchased a Parker 96r set that came with a brush, the brush is okay. I kinda like the one that you have with the Orange handle. Right now I'm using "the Art of shaving" cream, so far so good! I'd like to try a new soap. By the way, I'm used to shaving every day but now that I'm using a safety razor I'm getting much closer shaves. Is it okay to shave a day after? I still feel smooth but if I press my back hand against the grain, I can definitely feel the grain growing back.

Thanks for the great tips! The only reason I even looked into safety razors was the claim that they cut down on ingrowns and razor burn. However, I just finished my first shave with a safety razor and I see what all the hype is about beyond that benefit. Aside from a few rookie mistakes and stubbly areas, this is the closest and most comfortable shave I have gotten since my first few cartridge shaves. Only time will tell if my razor burn clears up but my face feels much better now than it did after I used a cartridge yesterday. Thanks again.

Hey Nick, I'm jumping into the DE world - per you and Busta my 34c HD arrives tomorrow! This is the 8th video of yours that I have watched. I wanted to send a shout out to say THANK YOU for your informative and enjoyable videos! PS - As Lame as they may be... the DOLLARSHAVECLUB commercials are a boom for you, your peers, and this industry. Like you, I have shaved once, maybe twice a week my whole life as the disposables are so terrible. PER THE COMMERCIAL I started looking online to see if it was worth it. That is when I discovered DE (literally by mistake). I never knew anyone used these until two days ago. So I say this as you deserve all the credit you can get. I bet many are stumbling upon these videos as they research the claims of the DSC commercials. You may take that into consideration for your next couple of Videos. MARKET yourself and your site baby! Thanks again.

Hi Nick, I have been watching your videos for some time and appreciate your approach. I see you did a good visit in Mass with blade sharpening, that was very good as well. I am recommending your video to friends I am getting into wet shaving. I have about 12 safety razors and 7 straights. I really like the straits and agree you don't always have the time to use them. I have perfected my technique well and get a cut free shave in about 10 minutes. I saw your video on the slants. I have avoided them because I felt you could always just turn a normal razor to make it a slant??? and you have to turn the slant to make is a normal razor when you are outlining the side burns, so it just didn't make sense,,,,maybe I will reconsider...who knows I agree that when you shave on a slant you have a much more efficient cut. I use this technique with my straight, (carefully) to make a compound cut on my challenging areas (the lower lip and chin area). if you do get the slants do a video ( I know you will ) so I can get some perspective on them. thanks

My pop showed me how to shave with a Gillette safety when I started shaving as a kid and I kinda quickly moved away to a twin blade disposable. Every 15 years of so I would wind up with another blade so I ended up using the fusion - which I have to say is very comfortable and quick for BSS (baby smooth shave) but uber expensive and the blades go off really quick. I've invested in an Edwin Jagger DE89 loaded it with a feather blade. I must say it cuts well but I need to hone the technique more - my face gets splotchy after a shave at the best of times and I have to say I am more so after the DE89. I get a bit fussy with the whole baby smooth deal as well which pretty seals the deal for skin irritation. I'm going to persist though because it's kind of nice to go 'old school' with a wet shave ritual such as this. I may try a straight edge one day just for the hell of it. Great Viddie...thanks .

Just did my first DE safety razor shave with a Seki AS-D2 and feather blades, Taylor's sandalwood shaving cream. Have sensitive skin and never used a DE razor before. 2 passes -- down, across. Amazing closeness. But probably took me 45-50 mins. Still not sure I've gotten the angle down yet.

I've been shaving for 38 years with a cartridge razor, and finally decided to give true "wet shaving" a try. Bought my first DE razor, brush, soap, and alum stick. After a week of doing this, I've decided either (1) I must be doing something terribly wrong (most probable choice), or (2) my skin is never going to adjust to a DE shave, or (3) I'm too old to learn this. After shaving for a week with a Treet "medium" blade, and not getting that "smooth as a baby's butt" feel, I decided to try a Dorco "aggressive" blade (I have a very coarse, fast-growing beard), and wound up shredding my face. Not real impressed with DE shaving so far, but like I said, I'm probably doing something (everything) terribly wrong. Hoping I can pick up some info that will make shaving "a genuine pleasure" like everyone says it is. I've always hated shaving, and was really hoping this would change all that. Thanks for the vids.
@bigbenhebdomadarius6252
@bigbenhebdomadarius6252 8 лет назад
Steve, I doubt you're too old to learn this. I suspect that you, like me, have a tough beard and delicate skin. For me, the key is softening up the whiskers thoroughly by applying a washcloth loaded with hot water for several seconds. Do this a few times, to really soften up the whiskers, then apply the shaving soap. I have never used shaving soap, so I don't know how much protection it provides, but for me, the invention of gel shaving cream was a godsend. It is what keeps me from looking like an attempted suicide. It is intriguing to see how complicated it is to explain how to use a safety razor, but Nick seems to be providing good advice, so follow his suggestions carefully. I absorbed the method forty-five years ago simply by watching my father, before cartridges were invented. I have to say that I'm really glad old Mr. Gillette invented the safety razor. I know that using a straight razor is the height of the manly arts, but talk about looking like an attempted suicide!

Just received my merkur 34c HD in the mail today (purchased on your and shavebusta's recommendation) and had my very first safety razor shave a few moments ago... With your tutorial playing to guide me, of course. There was certainly a learning curve present but overall, I think I enjoyed the process. I have VERY sensitive skin, and being of ethnic descent, have always suffered greatly from ingrown hairs that would not only irritate but scar my face. I currently use The Art of Shaving products, but I am wondering if there are other products out there that you would recommend for people with extraordinarily sensitive skin. Thanks again.

Great video, thanks for taking the time to make it. I've thinking of making the move from disposable razors to safety razors so I went searching for advice and found your videos. My main concerns were around the base of the mouth and the Adam's Apple which are trouble areas for me. I also found myself mimicking your facial expressions when shaving! I'm wondering how necessary three passes are - would one suffice? I ask as I don't always have 15 minutes to relax and shave in the morning.

Thanks for taking taking the time to teach how to shave with a safety razor. I'm after some advice; I've suffered from ingrown hairs for years. I first started shaving with an electric some 20 years ago, then moved to the common cassette shaves. Eventually my ingrown hairs got so bad that they had to be treated medically, and since then I reverted back to elecfric shaves and the problem gradually went away but sadly I never get that clean shave. I recently looked into using safety razors, which brings me to your videos. Last night i tried it for the first time, and followed yours and other experts directions to the book. Sadly I found the experience to be a nightmare. Even with smooth strokes with no pressure my neck was bleeding all over, and by the second pass I still couldn't get those hairs that lie flat. My question is, should I persist or just play it safe with the electric. Pretty annoying having purchased the razor, cream, blades and brush, but i don't want to wreck my face as well as get ingrown hairs again. Thanks for any advice.

I too was curious about safety razors, but ive avoided because of the fear of nicking myself , bleeding, and who has 45 minutes to learn how to shave. Ive used an electric for over 20 years now. Not the closest of shaves, but it was ok. I have a wet and dry electric shaver and recently got into useing it for wet shaving. Wow! Very close shave for me. Not as close as these experiencd wet shavers, but for me its close enough. I would suggest you try shaving with a wet electric. You get refreshness of a wet shave and the speed of an electric

You're lucky you have such smooth skin. I have a couple of skin surface irregularities (some shallow moles here and there) which make me very nervous about using a DE razor. I've learned to work around problem areas with a cartridge razor, and usually can handle it (otherwise I touch up with an electric razor). Any advice on dealing with skin areas that aren't perfectly smooth?

I use Edge gel. Does it matter? I also have sensitive neck area that flares up often. Hot water pre shaving usually helps but I have read 5 -10 minutes of hot water on neck loosens up hairs. Also after shave, does anything matter? I read Aloe Vera cools and lowers redness. Any thoughts?

Great video nick!!! I just wonder if i can make 2 pass with the grain to avoid ingrown hairs because i have a very coarse hair (black men)? By the way i shave with a Goodfella safety razor with olive oil (pre shave) and unscented goat milk shaving soap.

Wow, Wow, Wow! I've been watching you're videos for a while, but coming across this one was awesome! Big fan. I guess if I had one question, what would be your next razor after the 34c? I've watched a lot of your videos, but this one really hit the spot. Thanks again, Cheers

ey Nick, could you do lather and shave reviews with the Kiss My Face Moisture Shave creams? I've been reading some good things about these creams on the Internet and an 11 oz bottle retails for around $7-8, so definitely a good guy if it performs well. I'm sure other new wet shavers, like myself, would really enjoy your thoughts. I believe these creams are easy to find at major retailers like Walmart, Target, and Vitamin Shoppe, another convenient aspect of these creams. Thanks in advance for your consideration of my request! I really enjoy your videos, shave on!

Being prior military, I had to shave every single day, and developed several bad habits along with it. Once I got out, I eventually switched to a safety razor, and realized how wrong I was treating my face. Take time with your shave, it's the only face you have.

shaved with a saftey razor for the first time ant tricks for shaving with an Adams apple because mine sticks out I had problems with it when I used a cartridge razor and I don't know wat to do

Pull the skin on either side of the apple; so for the right side, pull the skin to the right, and the left side, pull the skin to the left. I didn't learn this on my own, I have to give credit to geofatboy. He's another great channel to check out for shaving techniques.

I have issues with doing mustache and chin areas. Whenever I try to shave, it always feels like its gonna draw blood. Sometimes it will be multiple cuts, other times not. Feel as if I'm doing something wrong because its the only 2 spots this happens,

Hey Nick. I got myself everything I needed to start using safety razors and I'm finding that I get a lot more irritation and nicks with my murker particularly in my neck area. I'm using shark blades right now. Should I try different blades or do you think I should just keep at it and find the proper angle? Or is there any recommendations you have for people with more sensitive skin? By the way it's a damn close shave. Thanks

does the type of safety razor u use make a difference or its just simply depends on the blade itself? for example, can u use a Van der Hagen with a astra, or feather blades and get the same results as if u were using a Merkur 34 or 38c with the same astra or feather blades?

Do you ever feel like you lose your grip on the razor when it gets wet from rinsing? I'm gathering my tools to start shaving with DE razors, but I know it's a problem with me when I use cartridge razors. Just curious. Thanks in advance.

Try to use VERY light pressure when shaving your neck and go with the direction of hair growth - the neck is challenging. If you are new, make sure that you have a blade sampler pack to find the best blades for you

I just started shaving with a safety razor yesterday. After three passes (with, across, and against) I noticed that I had razor burn and bumps. After this, I am concluding I should do with and across the grain (2 passes). I also did add pressure on my skin with the razor. Other than that, what else should I do/not do to avoid the razor burn and bump. They are irritating. I am Using a Parker razor, feather blades, proraso shaving cream and I finish with Kiehls facial fuel. Any input would be appreciated.

Your angle might be too high. You want it lower than 30 degrees.
@JosephWheeler14

3 passes is what I usually do, but instead of going against the grain on the 3rd pass I go across from the opposite side as the 2nd pass. You might like to try that.

Do you recommend soft razor as well? I used electric shaver but it's not cutting most areas on my face and I'm thinking on using a razor to see if those un one Ted hair would go away cause it's Embarrassing and look like I didn't shave, do you also recommend soft razors as well if I can't find the safety razor?

thank you for this video, due to the cost of cartridge prices I have decided to go with a safety razor but being 40 I been using the cartridge razor for 25 years and I want to be little more old fashion, I am finding you dont need 5 blades to get a baby ass smooth face. will it be okay to use the can shaving cream which I have been using for almost 30's years, Barbasol is the brand it's cheap and for the cartridge type shave I found very good but since I am switching to a safety razor wonder if I need to use the brush and shaving soap?
@dominicfoxwell1996
@dominicfoxwell1996 9 лет назад
I personally find that using shaving gels and creams tends to be a bit thicker than soaps. This means the blades won't flow over the skin as easier. You'll definitely notice a difference if you switch over to soap and brush, but really it's whatever you find comfortable for your face, there's no wrong way to do it in the end, try both and make up your own mind, you can find brushes dirt cheap on Amazon and Wilkinson swords do a good cheap soap if you just want to try. Good luck.

Your neck with this method of shave is BBS?You didn't do ATG. If I don't do ATG in my neck, there is always stubble left behind.. If I do, I always get razor burn and cuts.
