I notice a lot of comments where people say they have difficulty getting a fairly close shave even when using a quality safety razor and quality blades. One thing I think a lot of people tend to neglect is the pre-shave preparation of your face. If you perform a really good pre-shave preparation, you'll likely notice a much smoother/closer shave. Without a good pre-shave preparation, the shaving process will be a lot rougher regardless of what razor and blades you use.

Alright, so I got the DE89bl and I finally manned up and took your recommendations for technique and... OH BOY! I have always hated shaving. Torture has really been the standard for shaving in the past, as I have sensitive skin and I always get ingrown hairs, knicks, terrible razor burn, discomfort. I have ended up having to shave once a week and with a dull triple bladed razor. Anything else and I end up hacking my face off. With the DE89, Proroso menthol soap, badger hair brush, a little bowl, and the preparation that you recommended in other videos - this was not only the most enjoyable shave I have ever had, but also the closest. I almost want to run back in there and shave again, lol. I look forward to shaving tomorrow and seeing if I can shave two days in a row. I will highly recommend your videos and your retail site. Thanks so much for everything!

This comment was 6 years ago, want to know how things are going now, how are you doing? Hope everything is great at your end. How's the shaves?
@ryanmichaelhaley
@ryanmichaelhaley 3 года назад
@@presleyrodrigues Well the DE89 bit the dust only after a few years. The threads eventually stripped, and I wasn't overtightening so I don't know why a quality razor like that would fail. Some of the chrome had even "rubbed off" from the head, which was disappointing. I had a Merker razor that had a shorter barrel and I had never really used it, but it became my primary razor and I am still using that to this day. I've adjusted my process just a little bit, using Proraso sensitive skin, and Old Spice aftershave. I only use Gillette blades from Amazon, which come from either the Middle East or Russia (judging by the print on these boxes). These cost me about $0.05 a blade, and I use a new one every time I shave.

@@ryanmichaelhaley and has the irritation really gone away? Have you managed to shave daily since then? I've recently ordered my first safety razor online and I'm really excited for this. How has your experience been?
@ryanmichaelhaley
@ryanmichaelhaley 3 года назад
@@vitoramorim4884 Honestly my hair doesn't grown in that fast. I shaved Friday and now it's Monday and I'm finally rocking the 3 o'clock shadow (I'm 44 years old). I shave once a week, and the experience is much better for me. I could shave every day, but I have to use the hot towel before and after I shave, and take a hot shower prior to shaving washing my face really well, then using a shave oil or balm in addition to my Proraso sensitive skin soap. It's not worth the time, to be honest, so I just shave once a week.

I met an old guy in his eighties that had a smooth, clean-shaven face. There was no hint of stubble anywhere, and no evidence of an impending shadow. He told me that for his entire life, he has shaved with a safety razor using only olive oil. Shaving soap has been around since at least 1840, but he said that shaving with olive oil was always popular, because it reduces cuts and razor burn due to better glide, and gives a better shave than soap or creams. Any shaving oil also works just as well.

Just add a few drops of the jojojba oil or avocado oil in the bowl with soap or cream when you create lather. 5-8 drops will be enough. You can use olive oil or some other as well. Works for me.

I spent most of my adult life trying different cartridges, shaving creams, and soaps. I tried different combinations with no good results. In my line of work I am required to shave everyday, and I dreaded shaving everyday. I would always have irritation and bumps, and as the work week progressed, it got worse. I could only get two to maybe three uses out of a five blade cartridge, which are so expensive. After watching your videos I Finally broke down and bought the Edwin Jagger DE89 and WOW!!!!!!! Been using it for a week and the irritation and bumps are gone!!! I get a clean and close shave every time and actually enjoy shaving now. I have now completely switched to the traditional soaps and creams and badger brushes. Even started using a Parker SR1 Shavette. I went ahead and even invested in a good strop and stone, and found an old George Wostenholm Straight Razor that my friend had in his collection that was in amazing condition. After experiencing the old traditional way of shaving, I am really shocked why we as men ever got away from it. Thanks Geo, your videos are awesome, and they have given me a good starting foundation.

Just want to say, THIS is how one does a how-to DE shaving video. I've watched a few of these kinds of videos today and this is easily the best. No hemming and hawing, no endless demonstrations for the camera, and the viewer actually gets to see a real shave. Good job, very informative.

The reason he's so impressed is that the razor is made in Sheffield, England. The Sheffield area was and still is (though dimished somewhat) the Steel capital of England. I myself have tried one of these along with a Parker and Mekur and always end up going back to the Edwin Jagger.

Coming out of the shower Using the 3 pass method you use, I can shave my face in about 5-6 minutes. Still need to know what in your opinion is the best soap/cream to use for sensitive dry skin? I just received this razor today. WOW! that is all I can say! after years of shaving with triple and mach 5 fusion you name it I have tried it, the DE razor was by far the smoothest closest most non-irritating shave I have ever gotten. I have really thick whiskers and sensitive skin and if this shaves me like a champ then I am convinced it can give anyone the best shave they have ever had in their lives. Also, the Geo F. Trumpers almond cream had me relaxed from the almond scent overall great shipping and great products continue the good work

I have had mine for about a year, and really like it. Very forgiving, and has just enough reveal to get the job done on a medium to heavy beard. It has become my favorite compared to my Muhle R89, which is considerably more expensive. You can use an extremely sharp blade, such as a feather, and not feel like you shaved with a potato peeler! A perfect razor!

This is the video that started it all for me. I must salute Geo for teaching me how to shave with a DE Razor. At the time of this video I was a misguided teen who used to shave with multiple razor and I had terrible acne because of the ingrown hairs caused by them. A dermatologist recommended me to shave with lesser blades and voila I got introduced to single blade classic razors. This lead me to ask my mum to buy an Edwin Jagger DE 89 from England where she was visiting at the time. My love for DE razors has never diminished and still square up with the same razor as I keep a beard now. Thank you so much once @geofatboy for teaching me how to shave the proper way 🎉

Folks, listen to this man; he's a pro's pro when it comes to shaving. Geo, thanks for the great videos. I'd never heard of three passes before watching your videos.

Hey Geo! I just wanted to say thanks for uploading these videos, my DE89BL came today and I had the best shave of my life. I doubt I would have become interested in wet shaving if it wasn't for your videos. Much respect from the UK!

I've recently returned to DE shaving since my teen years and use the German version of this fine safety razor, the Muhle R89 Grande. I'm still trying to refine my shave and find DE shaving a real pleasure now and your clips helpful. You are a slick shaver and I hope to become as good. Here's a BTU from me.

I just switched over to this razor from a cartridge and man is it nice. There is no comparison. The first time I used it I made a mess out of my face but by the third shave I am close to mastering it. I only nick myself 2 or 3 times now but the learning curve is worth it.

Watching the video and a few others by Geo really convinced me to purchase a DE89 a nice badger brush and sandalwood shaving cream. Perfect job in these videos, and best of luck to you Geo! This is better than the knowledge a dad passes to his son.

I got this razor 4 years ago along with a van der hagen soap and cheap brush. Cut myself pretty good the first time I used it, but had that same set up the other day and it was one of the most pleasant shaves I've ever had. It's not the most aggressive, that's for sure, but damn if it ever isn't sturdy and gets the job done. :) Really, really nice chrome finish too.

Thanks for the video geofatboy. I had been doing my research and have finally been convinced to buy this razor as my first DE. As a Brit is is nice to see we in the old country are still making great products like this. I am tempted my the Merkur and the Razorock mission now along with the Feather All Stainless but the price of the last one...phew!

Just had my first DE safety razor shave - with the DE 89! Shocked, Stunned at the closeness and no cuts!!!!!!!!! - Sadly i already appear to be developing signs of R.A.D. I fear my excuse of "It's cheaper in the long run" may just have gone out the window. Loving this! Thanks geofatboy!

Hello! I pondered for some time to use a Safety Razor. Your vid made it easy for me to make my decision for the DE89. Gilette multi-blade bye bye.

Hi Geo I am really enjoying your videos! Just switched from the nasty cartridge razors to safety razors and really enjoying it. Now just trying to find a set up that suits me. Also keen to try out straight razors as well at some stage. Thanks again for all your videos.

After watching this video I purchased an Edwin Jagger DE89Lbl and some Astra blades along with some Proraso Sandalwood Soap. My buddy got me started on this wet shaving deal about 2 weeks ago and I purchased a Sanguine Shavette. Absolutely love the shavette, but thought I'd give the safety razor a shot too. Keep up with the vids, I know I'm learning a lot from you. Now that I have started with the wet shaving I can't see myself ever going back. It truly is an enjoyment to shave now rather than being a chore. Thanks for all thee info Geo!
