You explained that perfect. I actually understand it now. Been driving regular manuals my whole life and for some reason couldn’t grasp the whole high-low/split concept until you put it the way you did. Thanks buddy.

Same here. I love my manuals but never understood how to shift a semi transmission until I watched this video! He explained it perfectly! Basically just 1-4 direct and overdrive which is 8 gears, then split to high side, then 5-8 direct and overdrive, which makes 16 gears, and low low direct and overdrive which makes 18 gears! Now that I understand it, it’s simple really

@ARSZLB

@@eddyboisrond7259 not at all, double clutching was the norm before gearbox syncros! had to match that engine speed to your actual speed via a combination of throttle modulation/“floating gears” like demonstrated here, or you’d be grindin every gear you try to grab! 😁

My grandfather drove one and let me drive from one exit to the next I didn’t do it well the whole front end bounced all over 😂 but I remember his had two sticks and like 2-3 reverses I was like I can do it I drive a stick YEAH RIGHT😂 I was like 19 then. But man I loved that truck of his! That was his baby ❤ I was the first and only woman to drive it besides him. I was so confused but grandpa was so patient with me , one day I drive a 5 ton OVERLOADED AND break going out going down mtn I prayed and cried and started yelling for my grandpa I made it safe to bottom of that mtn later found out it was VERY over loaded. All cinder blocks packed to the top! I grew balls that day. I think my grandpa was with me that day somehow I just knew what to do

That is one sweet ol Petermobile, driver. Helluva lot better explanation than I got when I was learning how to drive. Had an old timer tell me to jump in the passenger seat, be ran thru the gears a coup,e times and told me some basics, and do this’s and don’t do that’s then he stopped, asked if I had any questions,said if I have a question just come ask, because he was getting out so I don’t feel self conscious n nervous, but he’d be sitting just over there....with those other hands that were gathering up for a break where they could all laugh at me, while I just get after it trial and error-style around our bigass yard. ...actually was probably the best method for me.

Back in the late 70's and early 80's I hauled milk from the farms and broke out in a 2070 International w/13sp. After a bit you get the hang of it and don't even think about the shifting, comes naturally. I drove until early '90 ending in an 89 Mack with straight 6spd. Got into an electrical power plant and went on to retire from that. Sometimes I do miss the driving....

Dr Deacon; 18 speed is same as 13 RTO or Direct Fuller tranny. EXCEPT you can split, the lower 5 base/stick gears, with splitter. Not hard to understand. VERY GOOD in the oilfields, used to work/drive in them, with Power Puppy . (mack)
@hitop2365
@hitop2365 7 месяцев назад
@@petersack5074 could have done with the regular terminology, crawler (not low, low low or low low low), Range change (low range 1-4 high range 5-8) and splitter (high & low in each gear). In reality doubtful that there are 18 individual overall ratios as there can be duplication). In UK we'd use 3 low pulling away on flat, splits in high range only and probably just on 7th & 8th. Crawler can be used on very steep hill starts.

Most guys don't need the 18 speeds!!
@SternDrive
@SternDrive 5 месяцев назад
Nope. I drive 18 speeds and sometimes split all the way up if I'm climbing a hill with Super B Trains. Each gear is different all the way up. there is no duplication at all. Now after saying all this, the 15 speed does indeed have duplication. What it is is simply is three ranges, and no splitter at all. The blue button on the side looks like a splitter, but it's not. It has three positions for three ranges. If you wanted to shift sequentially in a muddy bush you might start in deep reduction, you'd go 1,2,3 and then mid range (they call low) back to 1,2,3,4,5 and then high range, and then 1,2,3,4,5. It's just that easy. Most guys shift them like a ten speed, but they were skipping low to start out and they were going through clutches like crazy. With a 15 speed with a load you need to start in low midrange, however if you're in mud, you might choose to go into deep reduction to get started. @@hitop2365

If you've never driven heavy trucks, that simulator will trick you. You might not get it into 2nd gear, never mind 18th. I'm a driver trainer, and it's funny watching green drivers come in and get humbled real quick. It's not hard for us, but you guys take a while to grasp it. You see them double clutching like crazy and it just grinds, and then we shift it with two fingers and no clutch. It's called rev matching. You don't learn it in a day.

I always use the splitter in high range. It's just easier on the engine, and your fuel economy, because you don't need to rev it as high. 200 RPM splits are great for saving fuel. You are always in the sweet zone. Use your splitter. It's there for a very good reason. Bobtailing? OK, then you can skip it.

I know what you mean. I used to drive an Eaton twin-split and thought it was great, but much prefer my full auto scanny with hill start and all the rest.

I told my boss that if he gives me an auto shift, I will quit. I have never owned a car with an automatic. I hate them. Watch my video "Shift a 6 speed like a pro" and you'll see why. An 18 speed is a piece of cake if you know what your doing. If not, well I can see why you would not like it.
