Thank you for this training video. It really helped me figure out how to shift an 18 speed transmission. Your video is much better than other videos I watched on RU-vid. Keep on Trucking and have a fantastic day 🙂.
This is so cool. Like when I was little I went with my dad on trips. When I turned 10 he taught me. At 12 he let me haul about 30 ton across the state line. Hey I didnt say it was legal. I said he let me lol. So that's how I learned 18. This brings back memories. Him and i haven't been on a route in a looooong time
I use to Drive a 10 speed. I loves it. 5 on the floor like a regular stick but with a switch under shifter. Down for low up for high. In city I usually didn't come out of 4th. I loved how on 3rd low then go high she took off. Even towing heavy equipment. I used cluck to engage my gears . I miss driving that truck sometimes. It was a old truck I had to figure out how to drive it with minimal training. Oh the memories.
For the newly drivers who always get panic on how to catch their gear. Remember this speed and gear match for 18 speed transmission I made it for you. Practice yourself and drive safe. Speed - Gear 0 -5km/hr - 1,2 5km /hr - 3L 10km/hr - 3H 15km/hr- 4L 20km/hr -4H 25km/hr -5L 30km/hr - 5H 35km/hr -5H 40km/hr -6L 45km/hr -6L 50km/hr -6H 55km/hr -6H 60km/hr-7L 65km/hr -7L 70km/hr -7H 75km/hr -7H 80km/hr -8L 90Km/hr to up - 8H
@@jandearlivinglife4433 I've been driving a 13 speed and been learning on my own. Basically it's like an 18. But I'll give the speeds per gear from the 13 that I drive. Gears 1-2 are only starting gears or gears where you lost so much speed you about to stop or roll back. 3rd gear is lowest practical gear where you creeping onto a scale or sum. 3rd is 5 mph. 4th gear is 10 to 12 mph. 5th Low is 15 mph and 5 High going to 25 mph more practical around 18. 6th low is 25 mph at low rpms. 6th High goes to 35. 7th low is 35 to 45 and 7th high is around 45 to 50 mph. Right hand turns are should be the same as in a 18 speed. So clutch and brake and drop here in 4th gear or 5th low. I only ever use 5th high if I didn't catch the gear and it's a slight dip where speed increases. If you making a left turn, 5th L or H should match your speed.
@@andrewterra4938 thank you , I do a driving test tomorrow for 18 speed I am a bit nervous as I have never done splitting gears but I think after watching a lot of videos on here I understand more .
Nice.. been hauling 80tons up to 100tons for 2 years now.. would love to have eaton transmission over here.. all we got is china 16speed truck with max usage of 5years lifespan..
It actually has what they call a 9sp pattern(10 and 15 re use the "Lo" postion once switched to the high side) A 18 will drive just like a 9 spd using just the high/low splitter. Where the 13 and 18 differ is as he said. You can only split the "high" side on a 13((5 lower, 4 upper x2(each gear is split) =13) ) and 18(5 Lower x2 +4 upper x2)
Thank god a normal gear stick .not a pimp stick or wanker stick .thank you buddy be safe out there .hi from brit man in austrailia thank you i do know how to shift most stick shifts but its good to watch
I've been driving for 41 yrs now and 13sp is high as I ever wanted..I've drove 5sp, 9, 10, 12, & 13.. My favorite has been the 9 speed...Couple yrs ago bossman bought automatics or auto shift/ultra shift, whatever there called.. Definitely gotten to like it pretty good, great fuel mileage...Great video. Sure there is newcomers wanting to know...
What if u pull out of gear with the splitter in high (forget to put the splitter back to low before making your shift)? I hate when ppl suddenly break infront of me. Catching the right gear after a sudden unexpected stop can be a PITA some times (in a 10 speed). Now having to throw a splitter in the mix during a situation like this, sounds like even more havoc.
So that's how it's done. Well ok then. I've only driven 10 speed but I'm going to look at a truck that's got an 18, this certainly answers my questions. Thanks lol
Its so weird to me, I drive an eaton fuller 9 speed, its the same shift pattern, but you can only split 1st, lo and reverse, but the splitter is backwards to the 18 speeds, forward is low, and backwards is normal ratio. I'd love to be able to split the high range gears, its a dog getting on the highway loaded
I am planning to buy an 18 speed in the future Right now I drive a 10 speed I haul heavy loads Grain; soy beans and corn Gross weight 88,000 lbs I drove 18 speeds before but not for too long Actually I thought I was driving a 13 speed but it turned out to be an 18 speed I wanted to get a refresh on the 18 speed Thanks I like the way you explain it
A better comparison of transmissions would be to a 9 speed than a 13 speed. 9 and 18 speeds have the same pattern but you're splitting every gear an 18 speed.
Great video! For a while I was drivin a 96 westernstar that had a 3406 cat w/ 15 speed eaton. This nice thing about the 15 is for me (Canadian grain hauler) spilling the bottom end makes stop and go traffic easy with 43 metric ton in the box
Though it it's a good demonstration and everything he says is correct, It is much easier said than done. Wrangling 18 speed truck transmissions is very difficult for beginners......I know!
I grew up around trucks I was a teenager I was 18 19 I rode with my uncle in my cousin driving their trucks they had 13 speeds and I know I learned how to do it you can learn the pattern and it's the same pattern every time and it's easy to learn
I know shifting with a splitter is easy but I don't like that I like shifting it like a five and a four and a five and three sits in a four I don't like them splitters that's why I like nine speed they don't have a splitter
Obviously you don't need to use every gear. 101,000lbs with a 14 speed manual Volvo FH and a 460hp 13L engine. Start off in 1st low, up-to 2nd high, 3rd high, up-to 4 low, 5th low and into 6 low and split up-to 6 high.
Really cool seeing this! I've been learning how to drive trucks with 13 speeds, and didn't realize these are basically the same. Only difference being that you can split the lower range. It's still weird to think though you can go through ten gears without even getting to the high range yet.
I'm only halfway through the video and this is a big help to me. I drive currently a super 10 which isn't necessarily splitting gears but, if you want to say it's like a five-speed pattern and you have to split every gear to get to tenth gear. So this is very similar to that except for the high low switch in the 18 speed. Very nice video I appreciate it.
I already know how to ride an 18spd, but my problem is i havent driven one in like 3 years and i got to get back in one, so yea these little touch up reminders help, love it that he did it on a regular stick not a tall fucking idiot one,
I might be getting a job where the only truck available is an 18 speed and I never drove an 18 just 10s and they are super easy but I'll be honest I'm a tad bit confused with watching about the 18. The other question is are you floating gears doing this is that how it's only done in 18s? Im not great at floating but I can double clutch like a master. I know sounds funny but when I took my CDL test in 2017 that's a requirement to double clutch and just stuck with what I knew. I doubt guys are double clutching 18 speeds it just looks effortless when you put it in the next gear.no grinds or anything.
Why show any kind of shifting video when your not even shifting properly. Floating the gears is considered illegal in majority of states. If you “Grind it until you find it” your just costing yourself $6000 for a new trans or the company.
there is no reason why they can't make an auto trans to eliminate all the gear ratio bullshit.....hell with splitting gears, with an automatic there are far less moving parts then a manual, not to mention the repair factor for a manual.....(GO FIGURE).....
Helpful and educational but am confused about the so-called "splitter" or was it the "Hi-Lo Range" he referenced. Is that a lever, button or what? Couldn't see it but thought he said something about it being located on the front side of the shift lever. Would've been helpful to see what he was doing on the front side of the shift lever when shifting gears and doing the so-called splitting and transfering from Lo range to Hi range.
I got alittle lost, not going to say I didn't. Im one that has to be behind tge wheel and actually do it to understand but I did get most of the concept. Im use to a 10 speed and a job I just took has 18 speed or well thats what I was told guess I will find out
Not a trucker, just a general trivia question. In this video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bEnAxyWDVUg.html) starting at 47 seconds, it shows the driver accelerating away from a stop. He has and is using two completely separate shifters. As he goes through the gears he seems to be going back and forth to these shifters. Can you tell me what is happening there?
Good luck my advice is stick with it when it gets tough cuz it will get better and never settle always strive to make more money and get experience pulling and hauling everything.
You are the only one I found that tells exactly how to shift it some people say that you can skip gears but that's not showing you how you said that you could skip gears but you showed how to exactly shift 18 years and some people are saying reverse is a forward gear it's part of the 18 years but it's not I know how to shift it and I just wanted to find somebody that will show me exactly how to do it
My friend is truck driver to and he told me that you really don't have to use the clutch much as long as the Rpm are high enough. Is this true sir??? 😊😊
Big trucks have clutches but you really dont have to use them. The stick just falls out of gear once you get high in your RPMs. Even after watching this video i still do get how to drive a 18 speed lol and im a truck driver that drives a manual
That's because it has the same reduction box as an 18 same idea as a 15 and an 8LL they both have a blue splitter because they both have the same deep reduction box
Please do NOT take your foot off the "gas" ! Cringe!!! Next thing you know you'll be fueling up with gas. Don't laugh. This has happened! It is the "throttle" man, and don't you forget it. Also if you want to down shift the splitter smoothly, all you have to do is back off the throttle, flip the splitter down, and gently squeeze on the throttle. Now, how's that for smooth! For a splitter upshift you would do the opposite. Flip the splitter up, and THEN back off the throttle until it shifts. Smooth eh! BTW, it is never necessary to take the stick out of gear to split up or down.
