How to shift an Eaton Fuller 18 speed. I take through the steps of shifting through all 18 gears live in a real truck. It's easy to shift once you know the tricks.
A lot of people are afraid of standard transmissions, personally I prefer them. Shifting an 18 speed is no more difficult than a 4 speed once you know what you are doing & have some practice. Downshifting is the same process, the difficulty arises when you are climbing a hill in soft or slippery conditions when loaded. In that circumstance it's generally best to skip one or more gears.

I was going to do a vid similar to this , but there isn't much point , other than state that I was always taught that preselection should be as brief as possible because this moves as soon as the switch wearing the fork so the sooner to the change that this is done the minimum of wear over time. , The basic explanation I always use is an Eaton Gearbox is NOTHING to be scared of it's just a Gearbox. Constant Mesh Dog engaged, just like a Motorcycle just bigger.

Anybody who prefers automatic is just lazy. I understand the convenience but I'd much rather have as much control over my vehicle as possible. The turn of the century cars had manual levers you had to play with to adjust timing, idle and A/F ratio, while shifting the car, while steering and going through whatever steps you had to take with the petals. Racing was a lot more interesting in those days I'd think lol.
@lovesloudcars

I think the same. Most large trucks in Europe are now automatic...well sort off, they are manual transsmisions with robotic controled shifting and clutch control. I do have to admit that they are getting really good and you have option for manual gear selection. But I do prefer manual still. Sadly here in Europe manual will be the thing of the past soon. I never really drove true automatic in large truck like Allison you guys have in USA. I wonder how it is like.
@thomaswilson8634

There are very few automatic transmissions in semi trucks. There are many auto shift manual transmissions . I drove for 44 years I just retired and selling my t680. I've ordered a top of the line spec w990 510 hp with 18 paccar auto shift. It will be my first. Mainly so my son n wife can drive it. But I'm also smart enough to know that the electronics are to improve reliability and fuel economy. So I will give a report in 90 days.

You could use animal oil for saw lubrication for the chain as well as mixture for the gas and oil mixture ! Because both oil mixtures burn regardless where they are used as well as lubricate the parts of the saw ! Is the truck refrigerated ? If not it would be a simple procedure to add a refrigerator unit on the roof of the truck ! I saw a truck that size turned into a portable office space on a construction job a regular a c unit was cut into the roof of the truck with a small potable generator installed into the side of the truck pushed into a cabinet space when used the a c unit was on a track and would pull out and started to power the a c unit !

Hello Michael It took me a second to figure out what happened since you were replying to this video referring to the New Zealand butcher video! His trailer was refrigerated for cooling the meat. I have an AC unit I'd like to do what you suggested for part of my storage room for that same reason. His saw was battery operated, so it only needs oil for the chain lubrication. I've used a reciprocating saw with a long blade, they work well. I hope you liked the video on how to shift an 18 speed as well. @@lovesloudcars Lot of new drivers like me lol. Im 31. Just got my CDL. Running an 18 Speed tomorrow for the first time. Floating the lower gears smoothly is a huge challenge to me. Im still double clutching through them to keep it smooth for now but Im hoping to get more practice. Guess I gotta jump em at the lower RPMs. Youre video is very useful to get the rhythm. Clutch to put into gear, throttle, overdrive from direct, let off throttle a bit, let it shift, rethrottle, preselect to direct, pop it out, let off throttle a little, nudge it into next position, let it pull in and shift, rethrottle, overdrive, let off throttle a bit, let it shift, rethrottle, preselect, pop it out etc. Wish me luck man!

My question is can u shift like 1 to 8 minus splitting?
@lovesloudcars
@lovesloudcars Год назад
Yes. You can jump anywhere you want and skip splitting anywhere you want. The reason for splitting is weight and power. Trying to keep the engine rpm in the right places. When I'm empty I usually don't bother splitting gears. Sometimes downshifting you jump a couple gears, especially if you have a good engine brake. Hopefully that makes sense? Hopefully you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching and for your comment. Stay tuned for more my friend!

What are the benefits from a 13 to an 18?
@lovesloudcars
@lovesloudcars Год назад
You can split the bottom 4 gears too. So heavy loads or soft conditions you have more gear options where it counts. You have to be really careful and quick sometimes. Changing gears at full power going 4 miles per hour can easily go real bad and break something.

@@lovesloudcars I’m getting a new transmission next week and the thought of swapping for an 18 crossed my mind. I don’t do any heavy hauling or crumb a lot of mountains so ima stick with the 13 and just upgrade the clutch to a 2050. Appreciate the reply and great video.

Well just like they say practice makes perfect. As long as a guy understands how it works and what is supposed to be happening. What kind of transmission did that Kenworth have? There is virtually no difference between a 13 speed and an 18 speed except that you can't split in low range with a 13. There are certainly lots of variations. And it is when you get in a Bind that the experience makes the big difference so you don't think, you just do.

@lovesloudcars
@lovesloudcars Год назад
Good point. I guess it's the pattern that baffles people as opposed to the shifting. But you're 100% correct about what is difficult. Downshifting loaded going uphill on a soft road is NOTHING like just cruising down the road accelerating. Even tougher than that would be describing what's happening while doing it. Sometimes it's skip down 2- nope 5, --9!! gears as fast as it takes to read it.
@kingwillie206
@kingwillie206 4 месяца назад
It’s all feel at that point IMO. I wouldn’t even know how to accurately teach that because you need to intuitively know which gear to choose based on vehicle speed. I’d be yelling rev it and go into 9! 9! The guy would be fumbling all over the place.
