I just stumbled upon this video but I've been really working on my swing this winter in the golf dome and hit upon a similar principle. For me what triggers this type of move is to drive my right shoulder (left handed) up through impact. I took a long hard look at my semi-successful golf swing that's stalled at a 10 handicap the last couple of years and noticed that all the pros are really driving that forward shoulder up through impact. My driver SS is about 95 and my typical miss is a sky shot off the tee or a digger off the turf. My tempo is smooth but my shoulders stay much closer to level through impact usually resulting in a downward strike even with the driver. Moving that forward shoulder up seemed to completely fix that and raised my ball flight substantially at the same time with all the clubs. I was hitting my 6 iron off the top of the 100 yard dome at the back, something that I used to do with only the shorter irons. So while the explanation in this video wasn't necessarily the best I believe A&P are on the right track. As with everything else, you've got to practice and use whatever you can, with the help of a coach preferably but even without one.

Stumbled across this old video ,brilliant guys now subscribed. Your teaching of how to shift pressure on downswing correctly is something i now realise have been doing wrong my whole life hence short hitter.I gave up game 16yrs ago when i was 49yrs but retire next spring and will be taking it up again.I don't just want to return to the game ,i want to come back with better understanding and technique.I will practise hard through winter months and fingers crossed come back a better player,thanks largely to video's like this.Many thanks Michael Scotland.

Great video guys, in relation to the change in pressure to the front(target) side , do you initiate this with a conscious move from the non target side which would transfer the pressure to the target side, or do you instigate it from the target side towards the target? Thanks Ricky Nicol

How do you avoid getting dumped under when making that shift to lead leg? Hitting huge pushes when I shift pressure forward (but it def increases distance).

Justin Thomas in this video doesn't look like he's pushing away from the target significantly. His center of pressure moves to the trail leg hard and fast because he's jumping off of his lead leg. The pressure spikes in his trail leg because his lead leg isn't on the ground anymore. Then the rest of the swing is gathering his balance once the lead leg is back on the ground. I'd be interested in seeing how this correlates to his center of mass because I'd imagine his center of mass continues to move forward through impact even though his center of pressure moves backwards.
@Sansfaim
@Sansfaim 6 лет назад
So when Nicklaus Snead, Hogan etc said lift the left heel, and the first move down is to plant the left heel, they were fifty years ahead of their time. Nicklaus said, the faster he slammed his left heel to the ground, the more club speed he created.
@meandmygolf.
@meandmygolf. 6 лет назад
Exactly. All the difference now is that we can actually measure what happens.
@Tony-hn3mz
@Tony-hn3mz 6 лет назад
How? On his transition into the downswing his right heel is off the deck. Looks like to me he's on his left side into impact. Can't have 90% weight on his right side on his toes.
@meandmygolf.
@meandmygolf. 6 лет назад
Hi Tony. Yes in transition his right heel is off the deck so he quickly gets the pressure In to his left leg. He then drives up through his left leg which pushes that foot off the ground so at impact his left leg is barely touching there ground but his right toes are. Therefor this is where the 90% of his pressure is. Its not much pressure ate this point as he is moving upwards. Hope that makes sense?
@rm00k
@rm00k 6 лет назад
The guys are NOT talking about weight, they are talking about downward pressure one leg relative to the other.

but... his foot is up in the air at the point of contact at 2:56 ... how is he able to maintain 90% of pressure on the trail leg when only his toes are touching the ground?
@ivanyu2517
@ivanyu2517 6 лет назад
I think if you show most people this and they work on it, they will be prone to “leaving their hands” behind as they swing which results in right blocks, maybe follow up with a video to show how to sync the arms with the shift.
@meandmygolf.
@meandmygolf. 6 лет назад
leaving their hands behind isn't a bad thing Ivan. It can help create more power and a better sequence.
@grumpytex1970
@grumpytex1970 6 лет назад
From what I can see he doesn't push back at impact he pushes up. He may have 90% PRESSURE on the rear foot but not 90% of his body weight. He is almost on toes of both feet at impact which seems to indicate he has launched some what as a sprinter taking off from the blocks wood. Bit misleading but interesting either way you look at it
@meandmygolf.
@meandmygolf. 6 лет назад
Agreed he pushes up but what you have to think about is the angle of his lead leg, it is not vertical. If it was vertical then the pressure would move more vertical but as his leg is at an angle it pushes back therefore moving the pressure back to his right leg. Does that make sense? Yes and it's 90% of the pressure not weight.

@HULKEN1UP
@HULKEN1UP 6 лет назад
Surely you must be giving the wrong impression here. No doubt he has most of his pressure on his trail leg right after impact but only because his lead leg has pushed so much of his weight into mother earth that she is pushing back and in effect getting most of his weight airborne. Bet if you put a scale under him, he would weigh less than 30 pounds. Lots of pictures out there of long hitters getting almost airborne for a split second, so the distribution of pressure between trail and lead leg surely must be meaningless if we don't know the actual weight being distributed.
@cmares5858
@cmares5858 6 лет назад
Yea agree... I wish we could see pounds of pressure on that image, it would be much less right after impact surely. If his front foot is basically off the ground then any amount of pressure from the back leg will be 100%. Hes jumping upwards at impact, not really digging into his back leg
@swilding7
@swilding7 6 лет назад
Very much agree with this. There is also a difference between weight distribution and pressure. They are not the same thing!
@HULKEN1UP
@HULKEN1UP 6 лет назад
Yep. these guys are normally very good but I guess they got carried away with their new toy ;) The Impact position shown at 3:13 and the comments to that sequence are absolutely terrible and just about as far as you could get from Justin Tomas' position and oddly enough the opposite of what these guys have been preaching for years. This is a redo boys!
@meandmygolf.
@meandmygolf. 6 лет назад
Thanks for the comment. What you have to remember is there is a difference between weight and pressure. We are talking about how he shifts pressure and not weight. As you said also he gets the pressure in to his trail leg in the downswing with then allow him to push back and up. Weight distribution at set up varies but what the long hitters do is shift this pressure from back to front very fast in transition. Hope that makes sense?
@meandmygolf.
@meandmygolf. 6 лет назад
Hi Hulken. Thanks for the comment. I can understand that you think at 3.13 it is wrong. Piers is just exaggerating what happens so it may look slightly off. However this is actually what happens regarding the ground. The demonstration just amplifies this. It may look like Piers is hanging back with the driver and you may think that we have always said you need to shift. We still want that. We just wanted to highlight what JT does and show how the pressure in the ground influences the golf swing. Maybe we could have explained it better but always bare in mind when we often demonstrate a move we will exaggerate it to stress the point. Thanks again for the comment.
@1evh
@1evh 6 лет назад
I just had a look at your graphics for JT, and I don’t think that I agree with your assessment of his impact position. I don’t think that he intentionally exerts pressure on his trail leg - for me he just gets airborne on his lead leg. With no weight on his lead leg and his right toe on the ground, the sensor shows the 90% plus weight on the trail side. That jump off the lead leg is a power move used by many longer hitters, including Bubba Watson.
@HULKEN1UP
@HULKEN1UP 6 лет назад
Excactly this! And you can clearly see that he is way up on his right toe at impact with his leg bent so surely the weight on that toe must be very small.
@meandmygolf.
@meandmygolf. 6 лет назад
Hi guys. Great discussion. Please remember that we aren't talking about "weight" we are talking about "pressure" which is different. JT has hardly any body weigh on the ground at impact but what he does have on the ground 90% of the pressure is in the right side. I agree with you Elroy that JT will not intentionally exert pressure back in to his right leg as this will happen naturally as he pushes back through his left with the nature of his angles pushing him back. Sorry if it is confusing. Pressure and weight maybe needs to be cleared up better. I hope I made sense of that for you?
@1evh
@1evh 6 лет назад
I think that it is a great video to demonstrate weight shift and leveraging the ground (ground forces) to maximize effort. However (for me) the video in current form suggests an intentional weight/pressure shift onto the BACK leg pre-/at impact, which is not accurate at all. What he is doing is pushing UP off the front foot - not BACK as you suggest - resulting in that "residual" 93% force measurement on his right toe. This is purely a by-product of his "launch" off the lead leg. It is more like 93% of 5% of weight/force exerted throughout the swing. Thanks for your response and for continuing to produce such great content. Maybe this one needs a slight rebuttal/clarification though...
@1evh
@1evh 6 лет назад
Incidentally, for me, Justin's COMPLETE weight shift onto his LEFT/Leading side is epitomized by his 97% to 99% weight reading on the front foot as he holds the finish. 1% of his weight on the back foot is just incredible!

Thats just wrong cause he drives his lower body and he rotates fast through the ball and if you see his belt buckle at impact his drives it up and around which gives him a grear attack angle and he clears left side so he can turn through the ball fast .
@meandmygolf.
@meandmygolf. 6 лет назад
We are not saying that he doesn't clear his hips, his hips rotate fantastic. We are looking at the data and seeing where the pressure is from front to back during the golf swing. He loads in the bak swing, quickly shifts pressure in the downswing to the left leg then pushes back off that leg moving upward. Continuing to rotate during this also. Hope that makes sense?

Ok I usually like and agree with what these guys are teaching but I think they completely misinterpreted the weight movement of Justin Thomas here. There’s no way he could push his weight to his back foot at impact like that and still have the tremendous follow through he has! I believe he pushes so much force up that his lead foot is off the ground at impact therefore the boditrak reads all his weight on his back foot because it’s the only thing touching the ground anymore! As an Assistant Golf Pro and someone who gives a lot of lessons I recommend people do not try to have their weight on the back foot at impact! It’ll lead to bad habits and bad golf! Drive lower body forward then up at impact. Never back. My 2 cents

This is unbelievably misleading. He might well have 90% of the weight on the right foot at impact but look at 2:54, he's almost entirely in the air at that point after jumping off his left foot so, although it is 90%, that's 90% of virtually nothing, I'd guess about 5% of his total actual static weight on the back foot and about 0.5% on the front foot. As I say, totally misleading,
