How to shoot a stunning beauty photo with just a v-flat and natural light

👉 You may find this surprising but for nearly every portrait or model portfolio shoot I do, I start with a simple window lit image. It’s clean, timeless, and emotive. Before I throw in strobes, or eye-catching styling, or gels or anything else ‘extra’, I begin with elegant basics.
All I'm using here is window light and a backdrop (in this case a v-flat but you can use anything!).
I'm using my 85mm 1.2 which I really loved for this shoot and the Canon R5 which helped me visualize the end result by switching to monochromatic.
I’ve been doing this lighting setup for years with dozens and dozens (even hundreds) of faces, and I never get tired of this look. What do you think? Timeless? Boring? Your new fav? Something you’ve been doing forever already? Let me know in the comments below! 👇
👉 Also be sure to check out this month's episode of Learn+ which is all about natural light! ☀️

I can’t wait until I get the money to truly invest in her teaching because she’s doing exactly what I want to do beauty and fine art portraits, but the way that she teaches is like a big sister gently guiding you and it doesn’t peak my only child syndrome/authority issues and that’s saying something. She reminds me of my favorite college professor who I adore to this day for their wise wisdom and humor, so if she ever reads this, that’s a huge compliment to you. I’ll be a student one day, believe it!

Shooting in my garage with the door up on an overcast day creates a giant softbox. Combining with the V-flat 'negative fill' strategy provides an incredible variety of looks without needing any artificial light. Great tutorial Lindsay, looking forward to the opportunity to join you again in your (new) studio for one of your awesome workshops.

I’m moving into studio apartment soon and it has 3 big windows even though I’ll no longer have the really tall ceilings that I currently have now I’ll still be able to shoot and use the V-flat setup instead of the normal paper backdrop stand just use now I can’t wait to use the V-Flat setup I’ve always wanted one

of course you should use f 1,2 (or even less)...there weren't any good photos before the expensive new canon lenses.

Lindsey, great tutorial. I do the same with my RP. If you still have your R, I'd love to see you do more tutorials with the R to show everyone that they don't necessarily need to buy an R5 or R6 if they have the older RF models.
@lindsayadlerphoto
@lindsayadlerphoto 3 года назад
I mean fair enough, though I really think the R5 outperforms it... BUT you aren't wrong-- the R is still great.

Great video thanks, would you use a black v flat if your model had black hair? Would the hair get lost into the background?
@lindsayadlerphoto
@lindsayadlerphoto 2 года назад
If they had black hair, I'd only do this if I were cropping in close for a beauty shot and probably only if the hair was pulled back tight. Otherwise, no I wouldn't shoot on black with natural light.

Could you add gels to this set up even though the background is not gray?
