Here on the Leon Unity channel, we focus on original scripted content and creating a community of filmmakers, storytellers and visual artists.
Shooting Better B Roll is essential for giving some quality to those moments between scenes. Cinematography at the end of the day is just visual storytelling, and getting good Cinematic B Roll is one aspect of telling a story through the use of what's in the frame, what's not in the frame and how the camera moves through the frame.
For this video, in a minute or two, we try to give you a tip on how to shoot better cinematic B Roll by focusing on three significant aspects, DEPTH and MOVEMENT use these to tell your story in a cinematic way by getting depth to your image, and movement in the image to create professional looking B Roll. The third is your TRANSITIONS between shots and scenes to create a fresh look to the B Roll, but maybe we'll focus on that in a future video.

+VideoVibeKev Thanks dude, though a heads up, if you shoot in PAL or NTSC, for slow mo, make sure your shutter speed matches what it would be in that country. I’ve had so many slow mo issues with flickering, including this one.

@@LeonUnity Yea usually the rule is the shutter speed is double the frame rate. But no worries, still a great video and practice makes perfect man.

VideoVibeKev Oh, I know that, but when shooting in different areas of the world, electrical lights flicker at different Hertz. So the UK at 1/50th (for 24/25p) is fine, running at 50hz but 1/125th (for 60p) or 1/250 (for 120p) causes flicker, so you just adjust it to 1/100 or 1/200 and the difference to motion blur is negligible but there’s no electrical flicker!

@@LeonUnity AHHH got you. That's actually a huge help! That electrical flicker is always something that's been such a problem travelling

VideoVibeKev I have all my DLSR/Mirrorless gear set to NTSC because I trained in the US but when I used 100p PAL one time on a rented camera, I realised where the issue was, it’s the shutter speed. Doesn’t happen with cinema cameras though I don’t think.
