In this tutorial, we will teach the archery technique for breaking world records in rate of fire.
As of 2022, this is currently the fastest technique with a bow and arrow.
No historical claims here.
-Mack's Tactical Archery / @allofarchery
-Martin Sporri / alfarevoluzione
In Nov 26, 2012, Lars Anderson created the most watched archery video of that time in RU-vid history called "Reinventing the fastest forgotten archery". Since then, there has been a growing number of speed shooters for sport.
The fastest technique for rate of fire depends on the number of arrows shot, so this video will focus on the fastest technique to shoot 3 arrows, and one by one, not simultaneously.
When the number of arrows are increased significantly to 15 or more, shooting off of quivers will be preferred, because there is a limit on how many arrows you can hold in your hands. This video guide only focuses on the fastest technique to shoot 3 arrows, not how historically accurate it is.
Music: HOME we're finally landing
Special thanks to Summoning Salt!
Video Script:
The techniques explained in this video are inspired by historical sources of archery but the focus of this video is the fastest archery technique, not how historically accurate it is.
For the choice of the bow, most bows are suitable. however the fastest technique avoid compounds and olympic bows with an arrow rest, with modern sights or stabilizers.
The optimal bow here is a short and light bow, without a modern arrow rest. Although longbows can be used as well, they are more cumbersome to move around with. This technique is usually combined with running or walking so a shorter bow is preferred.
The ideal draw weight is something you can personally pull and shoot rapidly and all day. That being said, very heavy weights can still be used with this technique but your rate of fire will be more limited. For example, here is me shooting 125lbs with this technique but im shooting a lot slower mainly because of the draw weight. If your max draw weight is around 80lbs, then it is recommended to use 40-50lbs for this technique.
For the choice of the arrow, any traditional arrows designed for the weight of the bow is good. the arrow nock can be of any design but generally speaking the wider the taper is, the easier it is to speed shoot but standard nocks can still be shot rapidly
you can make special nocks that allow you to easily nock arrows but they are not necessary with practice feathers is prefered but vanes can be used if khatra is performed well.
you can have a wide variety of fletching designs, but generally speaking two fletchings are the fastest because as long as they are glued in a consistent orientation you can line them up to have an arrow magazine on your draw hand. the main problem with three fletchings is you have to pre rotate the nocks while looking at the nocks but with two fletchings, you can instinctively do this without looking at the nocks. that being said, if the nock is flat enough you can just pre rotate the nocks instinctively by feel, and then fletching does not matter anymore unfletched arrows are not recommended for longer distanced shooting
For the bow hand, this technique tilts the bow on the opposite side of the modern trad cant. So a right handed shooter would tilt their left hand counter clockwise, while a left handed shooter would tilt their right hand clockwise. in ideal conditions the bow arm should still give clearance to the string but this is not always possible when shooting 360 degrees while on the move. There are many variations of the draw hand, and it can be debatable which variation is faster.
variation 1:
The first one is based on the conventional slavic draw from the book arab archery. The Slavs have a peculiar draw which consists of locking the little finger, the ring finger, and the middle finger on the string, holding the index finger outstretched along the arrow, and completely ignoring the thumb. However, when you use the slavic draw, your thumb is available to grip arrows in the draw hand so you can carry an arrow magazine.
The arrow is placed on the opposite side of Olympic archery. From here on the arrow is nocked on the string, and you place your middle finger and ring finger on the string. the pinky is often ignored by speed shooters.
variation 2:
same as variation 1 except the arrows are held in between the index and middle finger. Martin prefers this technique.
there are other variations such as using the thumb draw but it is slower.
for the fastest archery technique, the shortest draw length, say 7 inches, willl give you the fastest recovery time but you should pull to full draw or almost full draw.
Finally for the release, side khatra is typically preferred to allow a wider range of arrow spines but if you just want the fastest time then no khatra is used.

I truely love these techniques, I personaly chose to maintain thumb draw with long arrows holding arrows Lars Andersen style, like wolverine. It is easier to maintain the arrows there while moving I think. But of course I am not as fast as Lars, my speed rate is about one arrow every two seconds but shooting this way I can be consistent. The Ottoman style, holding arrows close to the tip is easier in a big forest on the other hand

There are some things I take issue with here . Speed is only one aspect of historical medieval middle eastern or steppe archery. For example watch Martin shooting balloons I doubt he's drawing eighteen inches and there is zero demonstration of form . In my opinion if you are not training to make use of the full power potential of your bow and instead short stroking the thing ...then all your doing is plucking sticks off a string and this in my opinion is not archery and anyone who does this would be very quickly eliminated on an ancient battlefield....would stand no chance at all ,back then such a person would be laughed at not even being allowed the honor to defend his people in battle because he'd be a liability only succeeding in getting himself and others killed . Mack at least is drawing to the corner of his mouth however the asiatic composite bow was historically as is now meant to be drawn to zone 4 ....behind the ear again to utilize the bows maximum power to penetrate an enemy that is in all likelihood wearing some form of armor ...the military technique would also have been employed in order to gain another 30% penetration . As I said speed is only one aspect....archery that is good archery stands upon three pillars ,speed ,power and precision executed with form and balance , no one pillar can stand on its own, to be a complete archer one must have an abundance of all three with form and balance . I see little if any of these traits in this video and as such should never be allowed to sully a WFA competition or be taken seriously by any with a true passion for this type of archery .

I draw to the corner of my mouth, many archers who shot fast drew to that. (Arabic archery, the mamlukes, Turkish tribes, all had anchor points to the corner of the mouth) And according to the pillars with speed precision and power, this model would exclude shooters like kassai and Mihai from competitions. Because they lack warbow drawweight. I have video footage shooting 3 arrows in 1.5 seconds with a 85 pound bow. And all my shooting has been precise. Does this make me the master of the world? I would say no. No because we live in different times than the time of the 3 pillars. Martin has videos of him shooting 70 to 80 pound bows. With precision. And form. Jack has form and power with speed, does that make him a master of the world?? Does that make him a master of the world since he was precise and fast? Even tho no one has done what me Jack and Martin have done in recent times. I would still not claim to be masters of the world. Because I would say that times has changed from the time of the 5 pillars of archery. they had the three pillars because people were walking around with armor, and we do not have that in modern times, nowadays a 25 pound bow rapidly shot can take down anyone, I mean like especially in a home invasion type of scenario with crackheads breaking into your house. Even gangbangers aren’t wearing armor. And if they did wear modern armor no bow would penetrate it, because bullet proof vest are no joke. So it wouldn’t matter about power. These are just a few of my thoughts, I do have videos of me shooting to the earlobe 3 arrows in 1.3 seconds with form from Months before we met. Lars doesn’t use any form. And close range in a combative situation while on the move you cannot rely upon perfect balanced form. These are my opinions in the way that I view these things I like dialogue like this. This type of conversation helps archers grow and become better.

Historically speaking, no, we do not have solid evidence of the combination of slavic + arrows held at nocks with draw hand. The closest source we have is from Arab archery, specifically: "Another way to do this stunt is by placing the arrows between the fingers of the right hand thus: the nock of each arrow between two fingers when the arrows are only three; if they be six, then place two arrows between each two fingers, or if they be nine, three arrows between each two fingers; or more as you are able. Then follow the rest of the operation as described in the previous paragraphs." however, we have no specifics on if the release is a thumb or finger draw, but it is assumed to be thumb since the slavic draw was described as "peculiar" by the author of Arab Archery It fascinates me why there is no solid mention of this technique in history, in the context of stunt shooting. in this video the focus is on the fastest archery technique, not how historically accurate it is
@sarchlalaith8836
@sarchlalaith8836 2 года назад
Question, does 2 fletch make the arrow less accurate? I ask because far as I k ow the fletch is literally just to create drag to make sure the point is first, so in theory should have a minimal effect... But I ask because reality doesn't always match theory and you'd know better than I.

Fascinating stuff. I really hope you can put all your nerd-energy into this topic. I would love to hear your thoughts on the following questions one day: - Which technique is the simplest to set up/prepare for? In tactical/combat/military comtexts, which technique is possible to do without looking at your fingers and while distracted? - Which technique strikes a good balance between possible draw weight and speed? - Which technique is the most reliable/foolproof as it pertains to dry-firing? I am sure that one could actually just estimate it. Dry-fires per 100 or 1000 arrows shot. That could also be further differentiated into novices and experts of these techniques. - Which technique is easiest to transition to from the perspective of a typical English Warbow shooter? Slanting the bow counterclockwise (as a right-handed shooter) sounds terrifying. Would the slavic draw allow for a regular clockwise slant with this speed technique? After all, the arrow is held in place by the index finger. - Which technique is also applicable and still fast when supplied from a quiver? Meaning, which technique can seamlessly transition to getting arrows from the quiver. Any difference there between getting arroes one-by-one or multiple at a time? - What is an arrow magazine?

You should consider quad fletching or rotating your fletchings 90°. Your orientation of fletching forces the fletching to travel along the bow, creating inconsistencies. Fletching should never be exactly perpendicular to the bow, mostly for paradox consistencies. The dual fletching arrangement enduces a lateral force as the arrow leaves the bow. Edit, Note: Rotating your 2 fletching setup 90° will force the fletching to rid along your bow hand. Do not do this if you are using a hand rest or wearing an appropriate glove, or the fletching will embed itself in your hand.

Ypu can actually shoot even faster. Holding the arrows in the bow hand, heads facing forwards (like you’re nocking it) means you can just pull a arrow from said grip to instantly nock it and fire with a single movement. This saves time when nocking. This technique was used by Comanche archers, and was proved so effective that soldiers at the time using firearms struggled to deal with them.

Ngl I disagree so much with teaching the public this form of archery. It’s hard enough with the shooters out there these days. So teaching this style of archery could produce a different breed of mass shooter, or serial killer. If people want to learn this then they can train their a$$’s off and go read books like the OG archers. I love all archery content but I think this can have worse outcomes than most think.

@HistoricalWeapons

you need to tilt the reverse way and apply the index finger to prevent arrow from falling for beginner, or use torque for method two but thats more difficult

A bit disappointed, I thought you're going to show how to do the iconic multi-arrow shot from "Men in Tights"... Jokes apart, I was wondering (for several years) why nobody uses the quiver-on-the-wrist technique: a quiver-like pouch hanging on the wrist holding the bow. This would hang such that arrows can be grabbed in the same move used to pull the string of the bow. I've seen some fast archery shots, from (fictional) Legolas to a real-world demonstrating Hunic archery techniques -- they all pull arrows from the quiver on the back. While the move is fast, it still takes more time than grabbing arrows from a quiver near the bow. Obviously, this would not work in "acrobatic shooting" as shown in this video. Just wondering, why speed archery is not an Olympic sport, while fast handgun is?
@HistoricalWeapons
@HistoricalWeapons Год назад
The quiver on the wrist is about same speed as kassai archery method
@HistoricalWeapons
@HistoricalWeapons Год назад
Speed archery is very controversial for modern target shooters who don’t take it seriously so I doubt it will be an official sport

Why is it that we never see the target result from this speed shooting? If you can’t hit what you are aiming at but are fast why bother.. It’s impressive but it would be more impressive to see the results in the target. I’m assuming the arrows are just being sprayed out in front or these archers, some in the ground,some in the air and maybe some in a target 20 metres away. Nothing indicated that this style of shooting was more accurate than trying to hit the side of a very big barn right in front of the archer.
@HistoricalWeapons
@HistoricalWeapons 2 года назад
yes they are sprayed thats why its not a very viable technique. this technique is designed to break world records of speed shooting, not accuracy
