Thank you so much for this tutorial. Being an amateur photographer means you are always learning. Quite often you can understand something singular but put into practice with other variables sometime make them confusing. Your tutorials in particular this one, helps understand the the singular and how it works in conjunction with its variables. Every now and then the penny drops and you see the big picture, it is so enlightening. Thank you for putting it all into perspective!

Love your channel, learning a lot. But I’ve noticed what seem to be some contradictions on ISO, and if I may I’d like to ask for some clarity. In your ISO video you state ISO is just a gain nob for light, and isn’t really responsible for noise in an image. Rather, low exposure is the culprit for low noise, and you show this with examples. However, more than once, including this video, youve said high ISO can lead to noisy images. Again, I respect your work and opinions on the subject, but would just like some clarification as a new comer to this world. Thank you!

So what happens if it’s a nighttime picture in a dimly lit room if I put the iso up too much then I will introduce lots of noise but if I don’t have a tripod and I lower the shutter speed to give me some light then it won’t be fast enough for me to get a sharp picture, how do I solve this?

Beyond just more creative control, manual shooting makes you slow down and spend more time looking at your composition. Even if you're someone who shoots mostly in aperture priority or full p (totally valid choices just to reiterate Simon's point), manual shooting can be a great way to break yourself out of a rut

I use full auto, but only if the values make sense. If they don't suit the scene, I make manual changes. So it's important to learn to do everything manually, but it may be possible to mostly rely on auto, depending on what you're doing.

I have an old Canon T2i (550d). So I'm wondering what is the most gentle mode for the sensor. What does wear a sensor down the most? I use this cmos-grandpa mostly for music video where all I need is blurry background, and I make photos just for fun. For example, when I set a long shutter speed for a photo (more than 1 second) is it exposing sensor to light and can burn some pixels? Or does it matter if in live mode sensor is always active? I'm assuming ISO does have nothing to do with the sensor pixels if it just amplifies the image, right?
@simon_dentremont

No, the sensor doesn't have a shelf-life affected by use, other than pointing at the sun too long!

I learned photography in the analog era (i.e. last century ;-) when you had to decide if you'd put a Kodachrome 25, Kodachrome 64 or an Ektachrome 200 or even 400 into your camera. Relying on Auto-ISO took some unlearning learned habits and your tips to actually depend on Auto-ISO is excellent. Another habit to unlearn was maximizing the subject in the viewer and instead to accept cropping as a tool (which was possible for negative film, but not for slide film).

Most photographers nowadays don’t really shoot 100% manual if you want to shoot 100% manual shoot with a DSLR cover or flip the back screen so you can’t see it then use a hand held light meter. I found that shooting in Manual, by using the rear LED screen to make exposure decisions is a dangerous way to shoot.. I trust the metering in the camera (provided your camera is set up correctly for the situation) more than I trust the back screen with all the elements, such as bright sunlight glare, and other environmental things or the LED screen on the back just being out of calibration. There are many times when Manual is the absolute way to go such as using external lighting, strobes, or a situation where the automatic metering is being fooled, or of course you want to make sure that a shutter speed is locked in or an aperture is locked in. Of course, you can always then shoot TV or a AV mode but that can also be adjusted by bias in the exposure that the auto function is giving you. I dont shoot in an auto mode without also having control of that automation.

Back in time where we have to choose which ISO on film we have to buy base on where or what we will take picture...we can only play with shutter speed and apperture... There is where manual mode come from...

Am I the only person that likes my photos to have some noise so they can be a little dirty? Something about clean photos just feels unnatural. But when they have some noise or grain, or whatever the hell, they feel like they’re a natural part of the world. Hell even motion blur feels like a natural part of the world I love imperfect shots.

Excellent video, Simon. You demystify and simplify the camera settings and how they work together so wonderfully that I feel I will be able to get the shots I want. Other instructors seemed to belabor that shutter speed is changed only to capture action and never discuss how it affects light-for beginners it can be confusing. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.

One of the best natural instructors on photography you are... I used your techniques to capture pigeons flapping (1/2000: max for RX100 mark2) and got one of the best shots I have ever taken.

Hello from Scotland! Hope you are well! I just bought an R5 with a 100-500 Canon RF, 1.4x too. Are you possibly able to make a video on all of the correct camera settings to use? Or could you possibly recommend a few videos that you have already made. All the best for now!
