Thanks a lot for what you’re doing! Not so many automotive photographers explain how they shoot. Very good and detailed explanation of the whole process. Timing looks good to me also. Would love to see more of your BTS with comments on technical side of things. Some additional questions: - Why have you decided to do this color grading with red/orange toning in shadows? - How would you shoot alone without any assistance (if you would)? - What is your advice if you need to shoot in the unfamiliar places without any possibilities for location scouting before actual shooting? - Do you usually use exposure bracketing when shooting with Canon or other low dynamic range cameras?
@ThePhotographyRebuttal
@ThePhotographyRebuttal 4 года назад
Hi Oleg. Thank you for your reply and comments. Glad to hear another viewer ok with my long videos! To answer your questions. - The main colours are Cyan, Orange, and Yellow - they are used to contrast with the car colour to make the car stand out. The red is to contrast against all of the main colours to simply balance the overall image. - I have shot without assistants before, but everything takes so much longer. So I always try to get an assistant. - Use google maps and street view to get as much information as possible. Also find the location on Instagram to see the most recent photos of the location in case something changed after the google photos were taken. - Yes I always try to bracket exposures on tripod unless when shooting handheld (rare) which makes bracketing impossible. Hope this helps. Please consider subscribing - thanks!

@@Paulpanly Thanks Paul, but my channel is set up for more professional-related topics, which is what I found missing amongst all the other RU-vid photography channels. I wouldn't say my gear is out-of-reach especially for this photo shoot. Canon DSLR, 24-70 lens, a laptop, 1 strobe are all common items. Even my assistant was essential - don't forget this was a real job with a real client on-set with us with a very tight schedule. Working without an assistant would have been too slow to make the deadline. Getting help is a huge asset and saves a ton of time while shooting. Friends come in handy ;-)

Thank you for the video and for sharing your process. I saw these images on FB and Behance, and absolutely loved them! I have to say that it made me kinda sad and happy all at the same time to see that a commercial shoot like this is still done under such ridiculous conditions (no time, car is late, shooting in public spaces, etc.) Nevertheless, the results are absolutely fantastic!! As for the video....it was lovely to have a really long, detailed video, but that being said, a half hour video takes a lot of time to watch. Whichever way you decide to move forward, the content is awesome and that's what matters! Thanks again!
@ThePhotographyRebuttal
@ThePhotographyRebuttal 4 года назад
Hi Oliver and thanks for your comments. I understand that shorter videos are easier to watch (and believe me, much easier for me to make!), but I naturally lean toward going into details which cannot avoid the extra time it requires. Most comments are in favour so I will keep going. Yeah it was a tough shoot - perhaps not the best one to also film for RU-vid, but it's a Lambo so I figured the car alone was going to get more viewers than a less attractive car ;-)

Loved all the information and tips in this video. I shoot architectural photography (but have started dabbling in car photography) and not having perfectly lined up shots from the front/rear/side drive me crazy. Your tip about the side view mirrors differing blew my mind. I have an alternative tip for lining up the straight-on photograph ... line the shot up against the tires, specifically the two tires furthest from the camera and their relationship to the other two (though this is quite a bit more challenging for such a low vehicle). Works for every 4-wheeled vehicle, also works for the sides + rear and relieves my anal retentiveness.

Yes in principle your tire method also works and you're correct that it would require me crawl on the ground to see them for this car!

Great video as always. What's with the golf balls? haha. Also, was the top color overlay a CD idea in the treatment or did they give you control on the feel? Thanks
@ThePhotographyRebuttal

Thanks for your comments, Joe. I had full creative decision for all color treatment and as you see, we went quite bold except for maintaining the car color

Love your retouches, video explanations, technique. Only critique I've noticed is that some of the crops cut off strangely. W that said, professional shooting versus street photography- they have different expectations and it's likely that's what they asked for. Keep up the work!

Sorry! Why you used the reflector to cut out reflection in car instant of using CPL filter?
@ThePhotographyRebuttal
@ThePhotographyRebuttal 4 года назад
CPL removes too much gloss from the car paint.

@@ThePhotographyRebuttal If you didn't have someone to help you with a reflector, would you use a CPL filter instead?
@ThePhotographyRebuttal
@ThePhotographyRebuttal 4 года назад
@@Paulpanly Unlikely since I don't use CPLs. So I would probably secure the reflector to a lightstand to hold it in place.

Hey, awesome content! I'm not really a commercial shooter but still so much to learn here. Coupla questions are 1) what's that big rectangular reflector your used? I haven't found many car-sized reflectors and that one looks perfect. And 2) in another video you mentioned a private Facebook group, would love to check it out if it's still active.

Thanks for watching. To answer your questions, (1) It's called California Sunbounce. Mine is the "pro" size. (2) Pls reply here with your FB account URL and I need to add you as friend before inviting you to the group (since it's a private group)

Hi! Love your videos. I’m really learning so much! what size scrim would you recommend to get to include as part of one’s kit for car photography?
@ThePhotographyRebuttal
@ThePhotographyRebuttal 2 года назад
Not really practical to use a scrim for location work. I have only seen it a couple of times with huge budget sets. It's common in a studio though - 15x30ft roughly.

Amazing BTS. You are awesome guy and I hope for more videos. I have also one question, why didn't you use CPL filter? Are you worried about changing temperature during filter rotate? or maybe there are other reasons? Thanks for your reply ;)
@ThePhotographyRebuttal
@ThePhotographyRebuttal 3 года назад
I am not a fan of CPL because I find they remove too much gloss on the paint and makes the car look too dull

I’m just curious where you got the colors from? And how did you get so many colors.
@ThePhotographyRebuttal

Most of the colours (except the red) was already there but perhaps unnoticeable. Editing in 16 bit helps to extract the colours out

I use Capture One Pro. Much better for tethering than LR as you can control all camera functions from computer.
