My husband came running in from the mailbox waving the free catalog in the air for me saying "LOOKY, LOOKY, LOOK WHAT YOU GOT!!", He was so happy to see ME so happy. It was a fun moment. I read it cover to cover, then I saw that Jess posted this. I sure love this community and would like to thank you, Jess, for bringing us together!!! God Bless You!!!
"let it go and chalk it up to a learning experience" ugh the garden teaches us so many valuable lessons about life. Just try! Didn't work? Well you learned something, now try again! Love it
Hi Jess! I was so excited to get my Bakers Creek seed Catalog! I wasn’t even expecting it which made me even more happier! Last year I expanded my garden a little bit more and grew in containers and this year, I will branch out to raise beds.. to those who think you can’t do it.. believe me you can! Start Small and year by year just begin to expand.. I’m a visual learner so I watch all my favorite gardening and homesteading videos.. just go for it! You will be Surprised what you can do!! Thanks for the inspiration Jess!!💜
You are so loved! You are wiser then you know! I am so lucky I found you on RU-vid! What a blessing you and your family are to me and so many other people❣️I think so much like you do and boy do love seeds. I have so many seeds, my husband thinks I’m crazy when I want more seeds, thanks be to God my husband is so sweet, and long suffering! Love my new Baker Creek catalog, I willow in it, lusting for more seeds, planning my spring planting in my small garden, that I love so much! God bless you, I love you 😘 kiss Ben for me, he is a treasure❣️
My Baker Creek catalog arrived a couple of days ago.. OMG - I've gone through it twice already and will go through it again and see what I'm implementing into my garden. The medicinal section is fantastic also. Thanks Jess for keeping us looking forward to next spring.
I keep my seeds in the freezer, it keeps them almost forever if packaged properly. I found a jar of pink half runner beans in my mother in laws freezer when she passed away in 2004 and they were dated 1974... 30 yrs old! I kept them in my freezer until that next spring. Reluctantly I planted them, rather thickly Incase they didn’t all sprout, wow, they all did and omgosh I had beans coming out of my ears...lol I’ve been growing, canning, and saving these seeds every year since we found them in 2004. She would be so proud to know we’ve kept her favorite beans growing in her memory.... thank you Ma Jonnie! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Thank you Jess, love your channel..❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Excellent story. Freeze mine also in ziplocs. Got some collard seeds I saved in '03 that still germinate well, and a number of others over 10 y/o. Definitely the best way IMO.
I had a ton of volunteer plants this year but I didn't get any tomatoes this yea. Last year I got a ton of tomatoes from a few volunteer plants. This year I planted 3 times as many cucumbers as the year before and this year I got 4 cucumbers from 12 plants. I plan on doing the same number this year and pray we have better weather. I have started buying large amounts of green beans from the farmers market. I still plant a few but last year nothing did very well. I moved back to Minnesota 3 years ago the first 2 years my garden grew so much better than my garden in oklahoma. This year we had the wettest coldest weather ever. I had the worst garden this year but I will try again next year. I planted yearslong beans that grew 12 inches with 2 leaves and just stopped I didn't get 1 pod of beans. Really frustrating I will try them again. Thanks for your videos they are so informative and encouraging.
One thing to remember to order are also flower seeds to go along with our vegetables. Flowers can add a pop of color, provide food and shelter to friendly insects. You can start a butterfly garden, there is a butterfly that lays eggs in dill and fennel, monarchs like lay eggs in milkweed (try to buy the native one for your city) etc. you can also cut or dry the flowers.
You're amazing! Thank you so much for all your help!!! I was starting to get really overwhelmed and sad that I had started so late in the spring/summer and figured I'd fail in fall, but I feel much better after watching all your videos!
Your cucumber story reminded me of my Mom. One year, she had a bumper crop. She put up 100 qts of pickles, she sold some, & finally sat basketsfull along the road hoping someone would steal them. A few years later, after the first picking, there was a hail storm. All the plants were completely destroyed, & it was too late in our area to replant. Such are the joys & disappointments of gardening. Yes, our family of 6 ate a lot of pickles but it took years to eat all those.
❤THIS❤ is Why You are my #1 go to RU-vid Channel...The HONEST and Down to Earth info you put out there for us ...I Never Even KNEW about ordering seeds online till I seen you 😲 I think I will reach out to other seed Company's reading below Baker Creek Out of Stock already😭
For that person who’s a new gardener, I went to the library and took home all the books that came up under “Minnesota gardening” and just looked over them briefly. I decided on Sustainability on a 1/4 acre by Markham. Reading through a book by a gardener who lives in a similar zone to you (he’s in Maine) really helps get a good start. I’ve adjusted and done some things differently since then but he got me started and that was awesome. For instance I don’t double dig anymore but when I was starting I did.
Those first about 2 mins your so right Jess, we need to stand tall and help others to stand tall as well to learn how to Grow, Garden, and harvest their own food!!! 🤠 Even with Google at our finger tips it doesn't always help us to learn, most of the time experience is more informative than Google.
Lovely video Jess. Gardening is so much fun. I’m in zone 8a so I can garden year round. A nice tool I found is an app called When to Plant. You put in your zip code and it calculates your frost dates. It has an All plants list, Plant now (for your zone), Plants by Month, and there’s a chart on the month when to start in the greenhouse and when to transplant or sow outdoors. The plant list is basic, but it’s helped me especially with when to sow cool weather crops.
This was so informative and you are so down to earth! I am new at this and live in Tampa Florida. I am taking care of my Dad who has dementia and he wants a garden with some tomatoes and corn....pray for me because I am not the rocket scientist here...lol! God bless you! Gonna order some soon!
I wish I had friends or family members that gardened.....I would have a tea party and we could sit and figure out what everyone wanted as seeds and share them when they came in. I would try to have us grow different vegetables and then share them with each other making a diversified palette of veggies to enjoy... I agree with the you about cheap seeds they do not germinate usually and if you save your seeds properly you have them for years...... Merry 🎄 Christmas......
I had a mouthful of tea when you said your pig wouldn't eat your cucumbers; I completely lost it. I'll be picking up some rug cleaner tomorrow. Off topic but, I love your hair with bangs. Thanks for the great video!
The free Baker Creek catalog only makes 1 of my legs fall asleep and go numb looking thru it while sitting on the toilet. BUT, that big Whole seed catalog from Baker Creek makes both legs go numb and lifeless for hours. Keep your seed catalogs out of your bathroom! LoL ;-)
So, what exactly is the difference between the two? More varieties in the paid catalog? I've signed up for the free catalog, but I'm seriously contemplating the paid catalog.
Super Duper Seed Swap was awesome! I did what you said - bought two packets of non-GMO seeds to send out and I got so many lovely packets of interesting seeds back. Plus I still have some seeds left from the packets I started with. Multiplication, indeed.
I've grown out 15 year old pea seeds that I had stored in a cool place. I still have some of them and will try again in 2020. Since no one can be expert of a garden except the gardener that works there (every garden is different), I would suggest trying a couple things that may not work each year. BUT DON'T BE TOO CONCERNED ABOUT THE OUTCOME! I had two successful experiments last year and have two more to try for 2020.
I've got a 236 day growing season. Which sounds impressive until you factor in that it's broken up by intense heat and a monsoon season in the middle. This is the first year I'm going to try more than just a few herbs and flowers in pots. I SO appreciate your channel and generosity with your knowledge and time. Thank you, thank you!
Also your local farmer co-op has great seed and plant selection and they will happily answer your questions. And a huge plus is they will know what thrives in your area
Here on the west coast of Canada, i buy most of my seeds from a bigger seed company called West Coast Seeds. But I also buy as many seeds as I can from a family run business that is just 5 minutes up the road from me...Full Circle Seeds. I have also recently discovered a small company up island from me (I live on Vancouver Island) called Small Island Seed Co in Nanaimo BC. They have a great selection of VERY unique pepper seeds. I love being able to keep things local and family run.
Im so happy to see someone else using the photo/craft organizers for seeds. I really wish the organizer allowed for the packages to be upright instead of sideways.
Loved your segment on buying seeds. I live in Florida so we have a.long growing season. Yea! This was my first year ordering from Baker Creek. I went nuts. Even after I placed my first order I ordered again. They have so many unusual things. My theme in the garden.this year will be lots of purple. It is my favorite color. So purple bok choy, purple peppers, purple cauliflower. I am really excited. I am now starting my seedlings and hoping for the best. I am also trying fennel, rapini and artichokes this year. I am trying a lot of new things this year. We eat all of this stuff but they are expensive in the stores, so that would be a savings. Thanks for the tip on trying Baker Creek. Their website was very helpful and all the videos that help everyone. Happy planting!
You do a phenomenal job at explaining things. I have opened seed packets from 2014 that I need to do some experiments with. I do keep my seeds well. But, I have found that for some reason, older lettuce seeds don't germinate well for me. Other things do, though. Especially herbs and tomatoes. However, I have heard others say the opposite. But, I have NEVER thrown any away. LOL
As always Thankyou for the encouragement and information .... I love seeds too .... there were seeds found in the Egyptian pyramids that were grown ..successfully ❤️😇❤️💕
I've ordered a lot of squash seeds on eBay from Dusty's Greenhouse and every seed has germinated. Organic Heirloom Non-GMO Seeds . Hand picked, processed and package from locally grown produce in southeast Iowa. I like them because I can order just a few packs as I can afford them.
Hello from Benton, Arkansas. Jess that was a super great video. And your right So far here at The Rooster Garden Starting out has helped me plan my area Garden. This next year it will be larger since I bought more land to grow on. I hope you have a super day.
I love your information dump videos. I sit and take notes. and watch them 3x. lol This is my first time with a seed catalog. It is sooo hard deciding what to grow. We only have 2 raised beds and being in zone 9, picking stuff that will survive the harsh summer is a task. Limited space means we have to optimize the chances we get good harvests all year. QUESTION: why dont seed catalogs tell you if the plant is drought and/or heat tolerant? We get 115f summers here in Vegas. My tomatoes just gave up in late July, even with a shade cloth and 2-3x a day watering. PS:: thank you for the reminder to NOT go nuts with random cool things to try. To focus on the things you WILL eat as the backbone. I needed to hear that.
Thanks for all the tips! Super duper seed swap I totally am checking that out! The Baker Creek seed catalog is gorgeous,I grabbed mine as soon as I seen you had yours out Lol! It’s like I was at the first day of seed school and you obviously was the teacher! 😄👩🏻🏫🥒🍅🌻👩🌾
Thanks for information. I'm going with more trellis growing things this year. Like beans. And different cherry tomatoes to try to find some my granddaughter night eat. Great information.
Really nice video..I'm getting excited knowing I can only do so much...it's been 2 years in ground since my last garden which was huge...now I'm basically starting over with raised beds and building what I can before spring...yes I would love to have everything but bit I can't ...next year I can add more .. sending much love and prayers from 💚 #MississippiGirlGardening 💚
Got my free Baker Creek catalog in the mail last week can't wait for the Whole Seed Catalog to get here. I also order from MIgardner and have good success with his seeds, and for 99cents it's a great deal.
Jess I love the way you think. You are so right there is no "One Size Fits All" in gardening. FAILURE IS THE BEST TEACHER! When it comes to gardening I have found that "less is more". So many times I have grown way to much and then what I couldn't give away we ended up wasting food. I Hate To Waste!!! So now if I want to plant 20 tomatoes I only plant 12 because I've learned that even in a bad year that provides our family with plenty. Which is why "Failure is the best Teacher". Never be afraid to plant. If you have to much give it away. Believe me your friends will be so tired of free tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers.. lol But whatever you do JUST GROW
When I buy OP seeds, I choose the best plants to save seeds from. I have just started doing this out here on the west coast but I have had success doing this in other climates.
In the NorthEast, zone 6, Pittsburgh, PA the deer will eat your entire tomato plant stem, roots, and all! If you are growing tomatoes grow them behind a fence! The deer also ate my Okra leaves. You know they eat some of our roses and Hosta. They did not eat my Brussels. They devoured my cantaloupe bc of the soft rind. They did not eat my watermelon or pumpkins bc of the tough rind. They come back in Oct/Dec/Jan and eat the pumpkins. The pumpkins volunteer so it's a cycle:-)
Jess I wish I had found your videos years ago would have made things make more sense. I like you love to try the new and learned that what dose well one year may not the next. God bless you for helping people to grow and sharing your trials and errors.
The thing that floored me about plants was how incredibly intelligent they are. This was my first year and while I did do a lot of research, no one said a word about this. I had no idea about when to transplant my tomato seedlings but they told me! When you are watering them and petting them you spend time looking at them. The stems turned a different color and then they put out these little claw looking things which was their way of telling me they were getting on to be teenagers and needed to leave the nursery, lol.
Wish I would have watched this at the start of our growing season! I had no clue about the difference of direct vs transplant days! So many of my plants are 4-6 weeks "behind" and now I know why! Next year starting seeds indoor much earlier!
I've gotten five catalogues so far from various companies....and more will be coming ! Some i just toss, others are my go to favorites; time to dust off the grow lights, sterilize the trays and pots and DREAM ! Spring is a day closer even as i type this....
When I get the Bakers Creek catalog this winter, I'm going to purchase something from them. I always thought they were too expensive, but I can afford 1 or 2 packets. I can get the rest from Hundreds, who I like a lot. Also Littleshopofseeds.com is a small business. Thank you for encouraging us to think about what our dollars are supporting.
This should be the first video anyone new to gardening should watch. I wish that I would have had more of this type of thinking and planning before I bought so many seeds. I always enjoy your videos and your perspective. Thank you!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for all of the encouraging words in the beginning of the video! ❤️ My husband and I have always kept small gardens each year but this year we are going all out and it helps so much to have people out there that are willing to share their knowledge. It is so much appreciated!
I live in zone 7a, so I have a similar growing season to you, although it's much dryer here. I'm just starting out, and it's already September, so I just bought a bunch of things that sounded neat and that will grow quickly in cooler weather. I'll have the whole winter to actually plan, I only have time to have fun this year.
I dont think I have a template or friends that can help me I avg about 1500-1700 tomatoes from 1/25 of an acre -3 yrs straight but I really do love the idea of new seeds new flavors new drive for what I can do. Thankyou for your channel.
Hope this helps... You can freeze your seeds: 1) inside a jar, or 2) vacuum sealed. Just be sure to bring the items to room temperature before openeing them so that you do not introduce moisture from condensation. Best wishes, Kate in Olympia, WA
I look for the varieties that were introduced 70 to 100 years ago. There is a reason these varieties are still around today. Tomato Growers Supply and Tomato Fest websites are really good resources for tomato information. And don’t be afraid to contact your local farm extension agents. They are a wonderful resource of local knowledge whether you are growing vegetables, canning your harvest or plant fruit trees. If they don’t have the answer they can most likely put you in touch with somebody who does. State agriculture department websites are also a goldmine of information and don’t forget other neighboring states with similar USDA zones to your location. As far as Baker Creek is concerned, we stopped by there on our way home from Branson one day and had the best experience. Jere and his family were great! His girls showed my grandson around the gardens and Jere gave us a personal tour of his greenhouse. Also had an awesome lunch!
My baker creek order is on it’s way!! I love that they ship to Mexico❤️ ! I’m in zone 10 and it’s basically almost summer all year , it has pros and cons
Those extra silica gel packets you get with seemingly everything nowadays; throw those in your seed storage boxes and you will never have to worry about any moisture buildup. Helps to keep seeds viable over an extra-long slumber.
The other thing to mention, although only in weird climates like the Pacific Northwest (like me), is Degree Growing Days. My growing season is 4 days longer than yours but I struggle to grow things like the hot peppers because it just doesn't get hot here...doesn't get to cold either. For example...I can't put my peppers outside until early June because my nighttime temps aren't above 50F until then. And even in summer, we struggle to get above 85F more than a couple days of the year. Sometimes I miss growing in Southern Ontario where it's cold in winter and hot and humid in summer and the switch from one to the other is quick.
I just received my Baker's Creek catalog. My 13 year old granddaughter was so excited to see all the flowers. We spent time going through the whole catalog. Oh the joys of being able to share with her.
Thank you, Jess for all the info. It is so informative and so useful. Would you consider on doing a video on how to freeze your seeds? I would be interested in watching that for sure.
