Just a disclaimer before we start... Don't do this at home.
With that out of the way, I'mma do just that! I need a shorter driveshaft for the Turbo LS Caravan, and I refuse to pay a specialized, qualified shop 500$ to do something I can do myself! because hot rod. I start by showing how to super easily make a perfectly straight cut around a round pipe using only paper and tape, then slowly cut around a little at a time, remove the yoke, cut out the section of driveshaft that you want removed, and weld it all back up!
I’ve had some people ask for my address to send along something, so I thought I’d leave my address here incase you’d like to! I appreciate you guys.

Little trick I learned for cutting driveshafts were using hose clamps, gives a nice solid line to cut along

Funny enough, we had to shorten a driveshaft at work on friday. We twisted one off in a dump truck coming out of our pit. Pretty well exactly the same procedure you used.

Welp, we’re either both doing it right or we’re both doing it wrong 😂 a feller in gander had a dump truck stuck on the ice once when I worked at Johnson’s, he spun and spun until he hit asphalt and it gained traction and twisted the driveshaft like a twizzler, it was crazy

I use a ring compressor and crayon to make shafts to cut if I can't get to a lathe.

DUUUDE that would work perfect!!! Thanks for the tip, I’ll definitely be trying that next time

we always like it when people do this at home and then bring it to us for balance...most every time we have to cut the weld out, straighten it and re weld it before we can balance it...ends up costing the same as it would if they just brought us the shaft and a measurement LOL!!!!

I bet you see it every day! I’d rather have one made custom too, just didn’t have the cash at the time

Find a big tubing cutter. Perfect cut every time.

I’ve actually used them on exhaust pipe and they’re awesome! I’d love to find a set for a reasonable price but they’re not real cheap
@Reloadeez

I wouldn't recommend doing them yourself, a driveline shop will do it with a rebalance for $75-$200 out the door. If you do use a tube cutter, a 3 1/2" tube cutter is cheap. Use V blocks and check for runout with dial indicator when tacking up. Weld back with tig, better heat control and less chance of warping.

@StationroadRatrods 8 месяцев назад
Solid advice. I would recommend anyone who can afford it to have a driveline shop do it. However, this has worked more than great the handful of times I’ve done it 🙂

Is this safe to do ? I have a S10 that now needs a shorter drive shaft for the tranny I jus got . I'm looking on here to see if this is safe to do or not for the long haul kinda thing ?..
@StationroadRatrods
@StationroadRatrods 7 месяцев назад
That would depend on your comfort and ability with taking on something like this. As long as you’re confident in your welding and have a machine that can penetrate the metal fully, and as long as you have the yokes in phase then you should have no issues at all. I suppose i should write here that this is 100% your choice to take on a project like this, I hope it works for the best but I can’t take responsibility if it doesn’t.

@@StationroadRatrods hey I appreciate that. Reason I asked is my uncle and his buddy were gonna do that . And I personally never heard of that being done but I'm not too much into that kind of vehicle work . My uncle says he done 200 of them that way . His buddy is the welder and fabrication guy . I'm jus reaching out to some people on here to see if that's safe as this is going to be my main vehicle to drive again .

There’s no reason it wouldn’t work at all! After it’s done and welded if you notice any vibration you may want to get it balanced at a driveshaft shop. I’ve done two or three now and I haven’t had any vibrations up to and above 200 km/h but every driveshaft is different.

Why in the world are you clamping the tube in a vise? It’s really this type of stuff that keeps me in business. At least you utilized the hub to center the yoke back in but I surely wouldn’t trust concrete to be straight. I would have left a gap between the yoke and tube tube though. Seems like running over that seam is going to be super sketchy.
@StationroadRatrods
@StationroadRatrods Год назад
I clamped the tube in the vise but not very tight, just enough to hold the driveshaft so I could weld it. The concrete being straight is definitey not guaranteed lol but i used it to align the two yokes to the correct angle, not to make it square on the pipe, so I never got any vibrations or anything. Of course this could be done much better, just using what I have. For the record, I’ve been 130 mph with this driveshaft and no issues 😊

Doesnt want to fuck up the stow and go. Cuts it in half lmao. Maybe you can fabricate some walls so u can still keep stuff in there
@StationroadRatrods
@StationroadRatrods 3 года назад
I didn’t want to mess it up but I had to go through it anyway so I just put the driveshaft through the one side, so the driver side seat can still go down into the floor. I’ll Alamo be putting a tunnel over the driveshaft so I can store stuff, it’s a deadly spot
@quinton3997

You just cut the counter weight off
@StationroadRatrods
@StationroadRatrods Год назад
There was a weight on the front and rear of the driveshaft so I figured it was best to cut it at the rear as there’d be less chance of feeling vibrations
@chriscaccone986

Please stay away from the driveshaft! You have no business ever touching one again!

I made this video a year ago. This driveshaft is in my truck right now with a twin turbo 6 litre that gets punished daily, plus takes 300+ mile trips with no issues. I don’t have a lathe to balance it, but it doesn’t vibrate at all.
