How to shorten Seiko Sumo or Monster pin and collar bracelet!

Here's a quick tutorial on how to shorten or resize your pin and collar bracelet. This bracelet is somewhat unpopular due to the fiddly adjustment, but it's not as bad as people say. They are used on Seiko Sumo and Monster models to my knowledge, not sure what other models. All you need is a thin pin-like tool and a ballpoint pen. I was avoiding this for a long time due to the negative comments that I'd heard about the pin and collar system. I encourage you to just grab some tools and go for it! It took me no time at all to adjust this Seiko Sumo bracelet.
Cheers!

I would just like to add that in some bracelets, the collar inserts into the outer link and in other bracelets, the collar goes into the middle link. You can usually see clearly that one of the holes is larger, that's where the collar goes. Thank you for the video.

Hi. I just did mine, in my seiko mini turtle. I thought where I live the odds of the shop guy knowing this would be small,so I went for it. Seen all the videos , several times to prepare, bought the blue tool and went for it. I was expecting to be more complicated. Putting it back together was harder. The tip of using a pen is priceless, for me was decisive to get balance in putting back the pin holding the collar. Many thanks!

This video explanation is RIGHT ON. I thought this pin & collar on my new Seiko Monster SRPE27 would same as my Citizen, because on Citizen, collar goes into a tapered hold on inside part of link and pushed by pin as opposed to how Seiko does it. Your video showed me exactly how to do the Seiko on my own. Thanks for taking the time.

Very helpful. Got my SRPE099 adjusted in just a few minutes. I was hoping someone would post the pin size so I could be sure I was using the right tool. I measured the pin after removing it and the minor diameter is 0.89mm (0.0350") so your pin will need to be slightly smaller than this to work. I ended up using a paper clip that measures 0.75mm (0.0305") and it worked well with the ballpoint pen pushing the collar in place. The major diameter is 1.17mm (0.0460") in case you want to use a pin punch instead of the ballpoint pen.

I watched this after I adjusted my new Seiko. My pin and collar set up was different, pin was one size, it didn’t taper. I just got lucky. I pushed pins out in opposite directions and happened to get them in the right direction. Then I was wondering why they wouldn’t stay in, as I flipped the watch, the collars fell on the floor. I think the pen tip would’ve helped some. Overall not too bad.

So there appears to be a collar on each end of the pin. I just tried to resize a Seiko SPB381 which is very similar to your watch, but could only locate one collar and I believe it was in the middle and not on the end. The collar may have pushed through when I was pushing the pin out. I guess I’ll go to a jeweler tomorrow to see what I’m doing wrong 🤷🏻‍♂️
@NordicWatchChannel
@NordicWatchChannel 7 месяцев назад
There's probably a fixed collar on one end and a individual collar on the other end. I don't think it would work otherwise. Could well be in the middle link, I have come accross those bracelets before. Sounds like a good idea, haha!

@NordicWatchChannel
@NordicWatchChannel Месяц назад
Sorry for the delayed response! Hmm.. maybe the clasp is at an awkward spot on the wrist? I've had this happen on my Sinn 556A every now and then, and that was because I had too many links on and the shortest setting on the micro-adjustmens led to the diver's extension coming loose sometimes. This was fixed by removing a link and re-adjusting the microadjustments. Not sure that it will solve your problem though, but worth a shot!

I have an older monster and I struggled to take the pins out. Tried the other paperclip etc methods and had to buy a tool for it. Then it was so difficult to take them out I thought the collars are actually broken parts of a pin. I threw a couple away. I noticed something's wrong as the pins are not staying in, and am now unsure if I have a collar on both sides (I removed 2 links, one of each side). I dug through the trash (like dirty food packaging and all) and I actually found 2 collars. Put one back, but it feels like the pin goes into the collar halfway easily, tried the pen method but unsure if the pin actually went into the collar - not sticking out on either side. Tried with a magnifying glass but I'm not sure of what I see, looks as if these collars are missing from some other links as well (got the watch used years ago and used it but not a lot). I think I need a new band, nevertheless I learnt something new. :)

Well I just don’t get the point with using the pin & collar system. It’s fiddly and I’ve seen a lot of post where people have adjusted them and the collars/pin fall out during daily use. Maybe Seiko wanted to make a bracelet so that they can sell their special tool for these kinds of bracelets🤣

Pin & collar is the dumbest thing I've ever had to work with... It's got to be the oldest version of securing links... If its not then humans intentionally made a single pin or screw system substantially more difficult. I wouldn't say this is very easy, bc it's not... But it's not the most difficult thing in the world as long as you understand how it's working... It's fidgety and annoying.

Yup, no idea why it is so widely used.. It’s more difficult than most systems, but not as difficult as some youtubers make it sound imho.

Seikos produce some of the worst bracelets I’ve ever seen lol . I’ve picked up the spb297j1 (retails for over £1000) and the end links don’t even fit flush with the case .
