After playing around with making an action figure, I thought people would appreciate a tutorial on how to make these joints in Nomad Sculpt on the iPad. This is purely in Nomad, and specifically for FDM printing (filament based 3d printers).
The files for this will be on my patreon I guess? Does anyone want the files for this video? Maybe.

Tio for anyone that sees this comment. When splitting the shoulder joint use the rectangle split tool instead of the line and make it the size of the middle section you want. Doing this will make sure it's straight and also automatically join the two outsides of the joint together.

Awesome. I am struggling with this program since I got it as a brain break from blender. I really wish nomad sculpt had some of blenders features. One way i am having to find some of the precision I've been missing is to use that snap view box. When aligning the cylinder through the ball i would have looked from top view and centered them and then looked from right view and centered and then looked from front front view and centered. In any order just making sure orthographic view is active. As a person with disabilities it's nice to learn of your work. Thanks for doing that for disabled people.

When i am trying to get precise fits, I use the gizmo settings. if you open up and pin the gizmo settings options, you can scale the different axis of the geometry inside the matrix settings. You can either punch in an exact number with your keyboard or with the apple pencil slide it left to right or right to left. For me, this is a much easier way to get precise fits. Hopefully, that helps.

I've been going back and forth converting low poly meshes to solids, adding this kind of joint geometry in a CAD program and finishing the resulting part with further detail in nomad.
@josia3788
@josia3788 10 месяцев назад
Which cad are you using? I am using fusion 360 and when I try to convert the mesh, my pc explodes. Also, I am using the free license and it does not have the prismatic option, only faceted. The only thing that helped me a bit was reducing the faces, but it is still complicated. Thank you
@palermo777
@palermo777 10 месяцев назад
@@josia3788 I am doing it using FreeCAD, not more than 10.000 faces for simplified organic shapes that I then add further detail to in mesh based software after adding the CAD alterations, so a lot of back and forth. I must say it is far from an optimal workflow but I'm sure I'll find better ways!

So. I’ve just finished a designer toy mock up in nomad. I was in the process of looking for a resin printer… I’ve now see this. What a amazing video. Do you think I could get my design made with a resin printer.. make silicon moulds and then cast these joints? My concern that resin would be too rigid for it.. I’m asking as I’m wondering if it’s worth going for a filament printer instead. I’ve wanted to do this for years. Finally learnt how to use Nomad. And now I’ve seen this vid, I’m now a little confused on which direction to take 😂. Thank you so much for the idea.
@CalebKraftmakes
@CalebKraftmakes 2 года назад
there's not an easy answer to that. With this design, the resin will be too brittle to snap together. I tried it. Maybe if you added a .2mm gap it would be better, I have not tested that. If you printed in a semi flexible material it might be better as well. This specific method is for a filamnent based printer just because lots of people have them. Unfortunately if you are looking to make a professional prototype, filament based printers won't be great for you as they'll require a bunch of sanding to get rid of the layers.

@@CalebKraftmakes thank you for the quick response Caleb, I was really only hoping to do a small production of maybe 40 to add to my Etsy. But I imagine it would really hit it off if it had joints. It’s only as I had semi settled on a resin printer. I just don’t want to have to print each figure for a customer. I was really hoping to make moulds so I could do a couple at a time. I guess I will have to see if there is something semi flexible I could pour into a silicone mould that would retain its strength. Thank you though Caleb, you’ve given me a couple of ideas to play around with for now. I’ve subbed and liked the video. Thank you so much

@@willclark3921 I have had success printing masters for keshi toys on a DLP printer. The key is to make sure you're buying DLP or SLA resin that is castable, otherwise there's a really nasty chemical reaction between the mold making silicone and the resin, it gets really slimy and never cures between the master and the mold, and it ruins both. TheCrafsman has a good video on it!
