Hi Kamara, I stumbled upon your video and I would like to ask you about my situation. I have changed my degree three times due to personal reasons, specifically from BEng in Informatics Engineering to A.A.S in Accounting Information Systems and then to BA in English Literature. After dropping out of university, I worked as an IT Support in a local company. However, at the beginning of the pandemic, I got laid off and was unemployed for two years. Currently, I am working as a Data Engineer for a local company. I got this job after becoming the best graduate at a Data Analytics Bootcamp that I attended. I am planning to look for remote jobs at international companies. My question is, do I need to include my unfinished degree in my resume?
@thatswhatshesaid
@thatswhatshesaid Год назад
No I don't see any value in including your unfinished degree because you secured a job with out it and you completed the Data Analytics Bootcamp which is far more practical than what you might have studied in university. Emphasize your work experience and that you were the top of the class :)

Hi Kamara , I have changed degrees 3 times four years in a row (due to very personal reasons that affected my grades) specifically: BComm Accounting & IS, BComm Accounting & Economic, and finally BSC Computer Science and Data Analytics i am not going to study anymore however, i am applying for Cabin Crew at a Local Airline and i am very stressed out about putting together a CV and i don't know if any of these incomplete college degrees are relevant to the job description but should i include them on my resume or nah?
@thatswhatshesaid
@thatswhatshesaid 2 года назад
This is an excellent question and thanks for providing this level of detail as it helps me help! For your cabin crew resume, no, I wouldn't show each degree. But what I would do is highlight any relevant courses/training you took across those degrees and then call it "Undergraduate Coursework" and list a few key courses that may be relevant to that direction. Like if you maybe took anything related to customer service, becoming more fluent/competent in a 2nd, 3rd, etc. language, or the best would be anything safety related. If you have the above training/education, but not through university, just make sure to highlight it in your education section.

Hello. Instead of putting "Coursework in Art and Graphic Design" could you just put "Art and Graphic Design" while leaving out the 'Coursework' part? That way you're keeping it vague and the recruiter can't say that you lied about graduating because you make no mention of a degree?

@@thatswhatshesaid I bought an online course about copywriting and other courses, should I include it instead of my education and real-life job experience?
@thatswhatshesaid
@thatswhatshesaid 2 года назад
@@HartsVlog don't exclude experience. But consider cutting your unfinished degree and showcasing the copywriting course you took as it is more relevant. For your experience since it's mostly cashier and sales roles, you need to work on reframing that experience that it showcases skills that are required and desired in copywriting. So if you did some sort of writing in the role as an extra responsibility, highlight this. But you can also highlight your proficiency in sales, because copywriting is technically writing words that sell.

Hello Kamara.I found your video very helpful. I am making an attempt to make a resume and i have a couple of questions if you can help. I attended college for 5 years and never finished. Completely stopped once the pandemic happened, but I had mentally checked out prior to that. I never felt school was for me and had no motivation to go. I only went because I played college football. But I took many classes in Computer Science, Busniness Management, and Accounting. I practiced in a couple of coding languages. Should I include that in a resume under the coursework? I vaguely remeber much from it due to not practicing in years. But i did pick it up pretty well at the time. I'm sure i could learn it again if a job required it. Would i have to provide proof to an employer that i took classes regarding these courses? Even when i insert my courses regarding my Business Management and Accounting courses. I still owe money to my school for my final semester and would not be able to provide transcripts. And even if I could, my gpa would be horrid. I didn't find school hard and I always been able to learn pretty easily. I just had no motivation for it. So if I couldnt do all my work in class, i would do bad in that class. So on my transcript, it will either show me doing pretty well in a class, or completely failing it. So should I still include my coursework? Also i dont have work achievements. But i have atheltic achievements and also have done some volunteer work due to college football. Do I incorpoate that into the resume as well? I do speak Spanish, but not completely fluent. I can speak enough to hold small talk and conversation, but not enough to hold an advanced conversation. I do understand it a lot better than i speak it, but i do come across words that I dont know at times. And I really can't read or write much i Spanish much at all. Should I still include Spanish in my resume? I am currently employed at Sam's Club. Been there for 6 years. I don't have a specific career I'm looking to get into currently. Just looking to find a better job that I could possibly build a career in. And those all require resumes' so I'm trying to figure this out. Your videos are a big help. Thank you for them! I'm sorry for the lengthy post but if you could help that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
@thatswhatshesaid
@thatswhatshesaid 4 месяца назад
Glad you've found the videos helpful! To answer your questions (and a few questions from me): - Since you're not using your learnings from your 5 years of studies, and can't remember much of it in the moment, I probably wouldn't include this information. - No you should not have to provide proof of classes since you don't have a credential from taking those classes (ie. because you didn't graduate and aren't claiming you graduated). - You say you don't have work achievements but I believe everyone has work achievements, you might just have a difficul time thinking of what they may be. What have your roles been at Sam's? - Do you have atheltic achievements that didn't happen during school? For example, have you coached since leaving school? If not, I probably would leave any school-related atheletic achievements off.- - Can you clarify how the volunteer work relates to college football? What was the volunteer work specifically and when did it happen? - I would not include Spanish on your resume since it sounds like you might have difficulty if you're in a business setting where you might need to engage in Spanish. - Identifying your target job (could be a few different ones) needs to happen before you write your resume(s) as it informs what you share in your resume. A lot of determining what's next can be done by having conversations with people who are already doing jobs that intrigue you. I'd start there. Please let me know on the above and we can keep brainstorming!

Hello! Thank you for your video. I would like to ask for your advice. If I completed all the courses and practice and technically graduated (I have the worthless graduation diploma as well) but did not do the project required to get a degree (at least this is how it works where I live), what should I write in my resume? The secretary an the University said that what I am is a "graduate without degree" and this is what I thought I should write, I do not wish to trick any potential employer into thinking I have a degree or anything of the sort. I should also mention that it is relevant to my career path that I studied STEM (I studied Maths but work in IT). Thank you for your tips!

@@thatswhatshesaid It is called "Graduation Certificate" and it states that it is given to me for graduating the license program of this specialization and university (I translated "license program" mot-a-mot, I mean it as the courses/years of university required to be able to get what I believe is called BA, the degree prior to Master's)

@Marina_7 Год назад
@@thatswhatshesaid Thank you so much for the suggestion and your help! I have a question though, although I am a graduate without a degree, many people assume you have one if they hear the word "graduate", so is it really ok for me not to mention the lack of degree? Regarding getting the degree, technically it is possible, but I'll be honest, it is very hard for me as I have a lot (a whole lot) of anxiety surrounding it, so realistically that will still be very hard for me for a while at least. I know that this sounds crazy and stupid, and it is, but I am panicked at even thinking of touching it and in my previous short-lived attempts I couldn't sustain the stress and panic very long. I am looking into therapy, maybe that will help a bit hopefully. There is a lot of detail I could go into regarding that fear but it would be long and maybe not of much use to you, though if you are curious I can share my experience of lack of resilience. Thank you for helping us and sharing your wisdom!
@thatswhatshesaid
@thatswhatshesaid Год назад
@@Marina_7 so in English if we said Graduate of a program, no one would know what exactly the credential is, and you do have the piece of paper to prove that’s what you have. If you want to be conservative, then you can go with what the secretary said so: Graduate (all but degree), Program Name You could also put the total number of credits, so like: 40-credits, program name To be honest, I’ve never seen credentials issued for incomplete degrees so I’m thrown by what you’ve been provided.

Hello ma'am! My name is Nick. I just stumbled upon your video and I'm currently in a similar situation. I have a couple of questions to ask. I'm currently enrolled in a full time master's degree(research mode) at a local university and thinking about quitting for quite a while now. So, I want to apply for jobs before I quit but how do I put in my resume an unfinished master's degree when it's not coursework? And should include milestones that I had achieved during my study? (Ex: conference, publications). I would assume that it's an unfinished degree even though I'm still enrolled in the program because I have the intention of quitting if I successfully land a job. Thanks in advance!
@thatswhatshesaid
@thatswhatshesaid Год назад
Hi Nick, thanks for your questions!! Let's dive in: So if you plan to apply for jobs BEFORE quitting your Master's program, just the Master's of [degree type] and Anticipated Graduation MON YEAR. If you apply AFTER you quit your program, and you plan to at some point in the future return to your program (and you know when), I would put down the same thing Master's of [degree type] Anticipated graduation MON YEAR. If you apply AFTER you quit your program, plan to return to it, and your return isn't yet determined, instead of anticipated graduation, I might consider saying something like "Graduation TBD" or "On Hold." If you apply AFTER you outright quit without any plans to return ever, then you would want to change the education to "Graduate-level Coursework in [specialty]." I'd recommend checking out my video: HOW TO WRITE A RESUME WITH NO EXPERIENCE (OR LITTLE EXPERIENCE) (even if you do have experience) as this gets into how to display key projects or in your case, publications. I assume you're going to target a role in industry in which case conferences aren't that exciting, but publications might be. It depends on the findings of your publications and how it would make a difference in industry. Let me know if you have further questions.

@@vipin877 got it. I would keep the focus of your resume on your work experience, and cut your unfinished degree since it doesn't sound like it has any bearing on where you've been in your career nor where you're headed. If you have some professional development courses that are relevant to sourcing and merchandising, you could highlight these.

I dropped out of BA course in college for personal reasons and currently I want to work as a Web Developer. So do i need to add info about my BA course while applying for a developer position? PS:- I don't have any other degree/I haven't graduated from any college.

You probably don’t need to include it. If you left the workforce to pursue your BA, then you’d want to include it, but I suspect that wasn’t the case here so no need. Emphasize non-university training you’ve taken to qualify you for a developer position.

@@thatswhatshesaid Thanks for the previous reply. The only training I've taken is from a RU-vid channel and freeCodeCamp, so is it okay to just mention them ?
@thatswhatshesaid

@@snowtear5785 I'd recommend taking some free training on LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, or Udemy.

@@snowtear5785 sorry, I should note that you can also include your studying with freeCodeCamp. But the additional courses will help round out your studies.

I completed my MS degree, but result isn't published yet. What should I write on cv?
@thatswhatshesaid
@thatswhatshesaid Год назад
What I would do is include the degree and put the year of graduation (so 2022). Or you can put "Expected Graduation MON 2023" (if you'd rather put the date of your convocation)

So it sounds like you started a new program and are about to graduate with a Bachelor of Commerce degree? I don't see any value in listing your unfinished diploma. Focus on showcasing your soon-to-be-completed degree.
