Before you pass the guard you have to not get swept or submitted. Here's my checklist to shut down the open guard as I fight for my own attacks.

As an experienced open guard player and purple belt I love Stephens work. However this is the equivalent of turtling up while standing. To beat someone like me this is perfect but you can't stand their like concrete the whole time otherwise just like turtle it's only a matter of time before you get swept or subbed. So yes you can do this horse stance but be ready to move quickly to your passing style otherwise bad stuff is gonna happen to you.

The Joker I completely agree. This is just to temporarily stabilize the position prior to passing. Perhaps I should have made that more clear in the video!

You can remeber this tactic easily by imagining your opponent having "dirty feet". You wouldn't let those touch you, would you?

Ar Qua that's a really good image to use as a teaching tool. Just learned something myself!

Awesome I tried this today and it was effective!!! My usual sparring partner who normally gets good positions struggled and I asked him if he felt any difference he said yes but couldn’t quite figure out what I was doing!!

Great video :D I would love to see a opposite video now, how to regain the open guard, particularly if your opponent is going for a double over guard pass, Thanks Stephan, you are like the father figure of BJJ for me :P

Great video Stephan, there are some sick guard players at my gym that are forcing me to develop this skillset.

I've always found myself having trouble when I have low posture with people that have a game based off of a cross collar grip. Usually when someone approaches me like this I'll immediately take that collar grip, and either go shin to shin and work sweeps from there or just try to push in and ankle pick. I haven't really been able to get any low posture passes going without pressure to stop movement which leads to those sweeps from the bottom.

Does anyone have a video link which shows Lovato's "headquarters" position mentioned a 4:02?

What about just passing on your knees or pressure passing? I've started to play mostly double unders and over/under in order not to have to deal with all those grips and sweeps. Pressure, pressure, pressure like it's 1990 all over again!

Peter Montgomery that's also an entirely valid strategy that I use as well, depending on the day

what about keeping your knees and ankles togeather instead? this way there's no x guard possibility instead. works ok for me, I don't always do this but mostly when I'm in "headquarters" as you would say.

JiuJitsu9 if I understand you correctly then there isn't enough base when you stand that way, plus your opponent can close his legs around BOTH of your legs (like a closed guard around the knees) and just tip you over)

Stephan Kesting I guess your right but I'm amazed how many people don't know what to do from there. that second that they freeze and do nothing give me a chance to knee slide through or get caught in quarter guard
