Mike joins a mild flat steel bar to a piece of square steel tubing using SSF-6 Silver Solder and a propane torch. Notice the smooth finish, without grinding or machine work.
SSF-6 is cadmium free, food-grade, and works well on chrome-moly, cast iron, stainless steel, brass, copper, and bronze. This solder can be machined, powder-coated, nickel-plated, painted, chrome-plated, tapped, drilled, etc.
All you have to do is get your base metal up to the right temperature, which is 1150°F. It enables you to make a repair at that temperature. The temperature color-wise is a dull red. The tip of the blue flame is the hottest part of the flame. Rub the flux coating onto both metals when the steel starts to turn color. The bottom piece of steel in the video is resting on a wire to lift it away from the table. Tables and vises pull heat away from the workpiece. You will fight the metal if a vise is clamped too close to the area to be brazed. Flow the rod falt for maximum strength.
