The second side of the steel ring was harder to braze because it was covered by a layer of black oxide that formed while brazing the first side. To prevent that I would have put some flux on both sides before I started heating anything. The flux will protect the metal from oxidation caused by the heating. It is better to prevent the oxide from forming in the first place, instead of having to wait for the oxide to be removed by flux applied after the metal was already very hot.

Yes apply flux to the part as well that’s what I was taught

Flux would help although a reducing flame should be able to remove the oxidation during heating.

Only halfway through this video and I am so happy to have found this. You give all the most important tips and are clearing up a lot of my confusion. Also because the flame of your torch is mostly invisible here i am finally getting to see the behaviour of the braze pool in great detail. This the perfect video for anyone looking to get into brazing! Thank you!

I haven't done mild steel brazing since 1980 at college. I recall that word Borax, like Vim, a white powder. I need to braze a mild steel bolt to a mild steel plate for a metal chair repair. I looked on Amazon but it is not obvious what rods I need neither what flux I need. There is only a large tub for £35 which is a bit excessive for one braze. What I like about brazing is that you tend not to blow away the metal like you can arc welding or MIG or TIG, all of which I am not to good at. Good straightforward and explanitory video. Well done.

Excellent, thank you! Love brazing, strong as hell... sometimes have contamination or flux issues that cause brazing material to "ball up"... always trying to improve my skills. I have some silver loaded brazing rods, will try the recommended flux.

You do a great job- very clear articulation, explanation, and appropriate brevity. I appreciated the focus on the material at hand and your economy of words. I believe I will now go downstairs and braze for the first time with a pretty full understanding of everything you did in your video, which I'm more or less replicating. I like that you didn't have obscured activities taking place out of the eyesight of the camera, and that ultimately, I don't need to watch ANOTHER 10 videos to get second opinions. So, having watched numerous DIY videos- I give kudos to you as being fantastic at this. You also inspire confidence with your tone. I rarely review anything, but felt compelled to say this. I'll check back in an hour with results of the mission.

Just a tip. For that piece he was focusing more on the rim instead of the bottoms base plate. You notice the filler is balling a little bit. Need to apply a bit more heat to the base not the filler

Nicely done, you've got a knack for explaining this stuff and demonstrating it clearly! Watching that puddle flatten reminds me of watching my old man brazing copper for HVAC. The first time I saw the blob of brazing material get sucked into the joint when it hit temp, it was like magic. Took me a long time to figure out those copper pipes were sucking heat out of the joint almost as fast as the flame was dumping it in...no time for lollygagging, lol. I'd hate to see what kind of jabba the hut joint i'd do these days. :)

the cleanliness of the surface can b critical for even mig welding, if ur usin flux core then u the weld is extremely sensitive any contamination, u can get nice welds with flux core i even have a bottle of denatured alcohol i wipe stuff down with before i weld before i use flux core all the time its jus way more convenient n welds fine for most things, n for what doesnt u simply plug a bottle in but at the very absolute least u should really wire brush the surface n spray it real quick with brakleen it only takes literally a few seconds n makes ur welds look alot better n for sure alot stronger without contamination

@tapkius99
@tapkius99 7 лет назад
Not sure if you done it already , but the way i did it was cut a 2mm deep line on my sheet (5mm thick) using an angle grinder, then i fix it with clamps and bend with my hands , around 20 degrees . Then i heat treated it using a quick made forge with hairdryer supplying air for gigher temps . Repeat bend- heattreat until you are done, just be patient and dont bend too much at a time or you will risk metal cracking.

It's known as "Spalling", and the pieces that "may" pop off the surface are generally small. All depends on the moisture content of the concrete. Thanks for watching!

I welded broken small flat stock steel together on a lawnmower catcher twice (40 years ago) and it kept braking due to vibration but then I brazed it together and it never broke again.

Brazing works extremely well when the right rod is used, I guess you used the typical bronze rod. Thanks for watching John! Could brazing be used to join tin cans to make a stove flue? If the first part above the fire box is a proper steel pipe? I was thinking of using Tuna tins, as I collected a shed-load. See anything with "Made in the USA" it's going to be good quality. I got a Speed Square from Amazon. Perfect. It's in inches though. I can't work fractions. Notably it's why we were tought fractions at school. It didn't sink in. MMs are better. Re-use not Recycle.

The tin cans are really tin plated steel, so yes.

Harris stay-silv 5 or 15.

You’re holding the gas torch too close to the work: heat is generated as the gas burns, the flame will be at its hottest towards the end of the flame. Had you applied flux to the bed and the piece and introduced the brazing rod inside, at the base of the piece, the braze would have run round the entire ring, making a stronger joint using less braze metal.
@allenhonaker4107
@allenhonaker4107 4 года назад
Futon I totally agree. Branded joints should be treated like soldered joints because brazing is high temperature hard solder. The joints should be thoroughly cleaned and fluxes immediately to avoid oxidation

Yes, any dampness in the concrete will want to escape when heated - that's why experienced/knowledgeable outdoorsmen don't ever use river rocks to line campfires - or BOOM!

sure takes a long while ,guess you must be using propane/air torch,,nice thing is the other side is not melting but it takes lot of heat to flow cooper rods

Hi Heather. Yes, when I did HVAC work, I used Harris stay-silv 5 and 15 to braze copper tubing. Clean the copper with 400 grit abrasive paper until it's bright and shiny, no flux required. I should have links in the video description area. Thanks for watching!

I'm new to welding/brazing. Just trying to spot weld/braze tin blades back to frame on a yard whirligig. But not sure what to order. What is difference of stay silv 5, 6, or 15?
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 3 года назад
For tin, you solder. The melting point is too low to braze. Use an acid flux and solid solder wire.

To all the pros here, I am a beginner in brazing. I have been wonder what will happen to the brazing joint after a certain of time exposed to the environment? I used a copper-based brazing alloy as the filler metal to join two pieces of carbon steel plate. What is the possible failure that may occur on the brazed plate?
@electronicsNmore

Anything is possible. How well you did the job is the most important factor.

+electronicsNmore Thanks! I'm trying to figure out how to "weld" old keys together. I'm learning that it may be easier to silver solder them. It seems as though having a good flux and taking my time in heating up the base and to be sure my flux is back into a watery appearance and I should be good to go.

Great video!! The braze looks like a weld to me. Lol. If you hadn't told me that it was brazed I wouldn't have known. I never knew you could braze steel or other metals. All I've ever seen is aluminum. Do you think brazing is better than welding for putting together thinner metals?

Looks like your concentrating all your heat on the ring. Both pieces have to be close to the same temperature for a good braze.
