Singing 'from your diaphragm' is one of the only things people seem to know about vocal technique. Often they don't know how to do it but they've heard of the idea way more than any other areas of singing. You will always have to come back to breathing when trying to work on the voice, no matter what else you work on, if you don't fix your breath control then nothing else will work. This video helps break down step by step how to get the right muscles engaged for singing and how to breathe and get proper breath support.

I usually don't like very long videos (as we are used to with current RU-vid trends), however, I found the length of it and you talking like human very helpful.

It’s even better to breath through nose while singing. There’s really interesting book Breath by James Nestor where were examples of athletes and singers that started breathing through nose and were able to perform better and even healed some of their health issues. It is harder when I try it but these times when I got it it feels much more supported. Anyways topic is important, thanks for giving some cool informations!

I don’t know the science of it but it feels like the lower back expands more when breathing through the nose. Almost like support is automatically set up. It’s not something I can get used to while singing but I try to do it during scales and exercises

I’ve been looking into bel canto and appoggio breathing technique, and they way they had me feel the sensation to aim for was to breath in through my nose. I’ve been practicing getting that same sensation when I breath in through my mouth. I agree with you, for me, I feels more supported like that.

I'm watching all of your videos. I'm in a hard-core punk band, and I know I'm working with a mixture of proper technique for some things, and I'm way off for others. Trying to trouble shoot, this video and your way of articulating things really clicks with me. Thanks mang

Great talk/lesson. Sort of proves that often the best teachers are the ones that have been through the crap rather than the ones that had just done it right from the start, if that makes any sense. I heard once somewhere that Bach was a terrible teacher, because it (music/composition I dunno) was all so obvious to him he couldn't understand how anyone couldn't get it, so he was impatient and couldn't explain stuff haha. Sounds like you're from the north of England somewhere, the place I feel the most at home. Unfortunately I'm a long way from there and walk around upside down atm . haha Thanks and kind regards

Ah thanks so much. I believe this is true . People who have had to struggle are better teachers for it. I’m based in Leicester now but originally from further north, South Yorkshire . So yeah! Thanks for the comments and good luck with your singing. I’ll be posting lots more videos soon .

Great content!! Thanks! Quick question - Am I supposed to feel any kind of muscular improvment from the diaphragm after practicing the breathing excercises for a week or two? Like any physical feeling of control, if my question makes any sense

What about breathing through nose, not through mouth?
@Radior_
@Radior_ 2 месяца назад
Thank you so much for this video, I'm starting my singing journey (right now I can barely sing at all) and your videos seem like the perfect starting point; one thing I'm not able to do is singing/talking without letting go of air, do you actually not let go of air at all?
@singingmatterscalder
@singingmatterscalder 2 месяца назад
@@Radior_ well, yeah, weirdly it’s good to almost imagine you’re not letting the air out at all. Obviously you are because it wouldn’t work without it but we need to retain it as much as possible, this is how singers can hold really long notes because they are holding it back, using support in the body and keeping the vocal cords nice and closed . I’m going to have a load more content on breathing available soon . Imagine how hard it is to sing well when you lose all the air in the first word of the line …

Do you find lip trills any good?
@singingmatterscalder
@singingmatterscalder 3 месяца назад
Absolutely! They are a great warm up, used by singers from all walks of life. Tree can tell you a lot about how your voice is functioning, including breath control and support, but resonance as well. But it’s the ‘semi-occluded vocal tract’ element of lip trills and other such like exercises that gives the vocal cords a little bit of air pressure from above them as well as below that they really like! it’s a great warmup used by all sorts of people… seems like some weird load of nonsense but it’s actually really really useful

I find when I breathe through my diaphragm, it feels like I'm getting less air then when I take a deep breath with my chest. Is this due to a lack of muscle training? Or does this sound like I'm not properly breathing through my diaphragm?

I have a question about “engaging the core” I hear people say appoggio “lean out” & push in from the core at the same time. Which is correct? I do an ab workout daily & my core is pretty much engaged w/o purposely engaging it. It’s frustrating and exhausting trying to figure out what is actually correct. Thank you for sharing your info!

Singing from diaphragm as technique became nowadays just like a moto in RU-vid. In the genuine reality anyone can sing great by taking proper voice lessons from good teachers and without thinking about diaphragm at all if the mouth's position is done right leading your diaphragm work by itself automatically . Yes, I say the mouth's position itself will cause the diaphragm to move and breathe properly. I can sing with my legs up in the air & with my head right on the floor as in yoga without straining because of good breathing done automatically without thinking of it. When you drive you don't need to watch how the car's wheels will be spinning because you know it automatically that the car's wheels are spinning.
