A lot of singers who are new to voice training don’t really know why they are warming up. Or, why they are using a particular exercise. They dutifully play along and make some attempt to warm up but aren’t aware how to get the most from any exercise. This video is a discussion about warming up and how it’s about much more than just stretching the muscles.

Fantastic how you describe the 'felt' aspect of each.Rather than just the names of the exercise type.

This is helpful, I have a gig next week and I’m doing crying lightning as one of the songs. The second chorus in that song gives me the fears since only some days I can do it well, just goes to show how much the voice is truly a moving target. I’ve started doing those octave and a half lip trill warmups and they mostly help. Great video as always 👍

I find it helps a lot to start off quiet and work your way up with the volume after some time practicing. I like that you do it quietly sometimes, because I can follow along better when you do lol.

For 5 years I never warmed up. Paid the price developing a soft nodule. Took a year to build myself up with voice therapy vocal coaching but still struggling with stamina a year later 😢 finding it very frustrating I also use a vocal app daily warm up.

Thanks I’ve been loving your videos, do singing straws and singing with lip trolls accomplish the same thing or no? If not, what is the difference?

Very similar principle. They are both ‘semi-occluded vocal tract exercises’. They create a little bit of back pressure with the air, as it’s being restricted from escaping, it’s kind of building a little air pressure in the mouth so the cords get a air pressure above and below .

Lip bubbles.... So hard for me. Not pushing....so hard for me.

I suggest trying anything you can to stop that habit/action of pushing. Lip bubbles will work when that’s fixed . I think in my breathing from diaphragm vid I talk about some step by step ways to work out what’s happening with breath. From taking a breath and making a huh sound. Stopping the air flow with the cords. And then trying to let go of tension but keep the body engaged and holding the breath back. Just LET the air out slowly with a noisy breath hhhh kind of sound. Making it not tense and squeezed and pushed but just allowing the air to escape You’re trying o practice controlling how much air and removing force . Try to read those steps again and/or follow the other vid. It seems impossible but you can change those habits! Notice what happens in your abdomen at the very start of the note. Is your stomach pushing , does you whole body throw the air out(? Pay close attention to what’s happening and practice letting long slow breath out without that , or making a note without that force . Hope this helps

Thanks for taking the time. I can sing easy sometimes, but then I fall into pushing. I just get tighter and have more and more compression going on. Chris Cornell is a big influence and Johnny Cash as well. I try hard to pay attention to my breath and not just going for it, but sometimes it seems like the only way I can do some of the stuff I want to. Then I get tired and can feel that I've caused my vocal cords to swell some and get sore feeling. I will keep working on it. @@singingmatterscalder
