I just want to say, I’m returning to this video after about a year of practicing singing using this method. Not only did I notice an immediate improvement myself, but within weeks my friends were all telling me how much my singing had suddenly improved. A few months in, I noticed my ability to tune my guitar by ear has been improved dramatically, and now I constantly get compliments about my singing that I can tell are much more genuine than the simple “politeness” I had received before. Thanks Aimee, I owe you a lot for this one, and to anyone discouraged by the difficulty of this exercise (at first I felt like I had no control and I couldn’t do anything about my flatness or sharpness), like anything else in music, if you keep dedicating the hours you will come out successful.

So this is what I learned from the app. No one in my family learned to sing or play an instrument. Sure we could play a record player or cassette tape. I have always wanted to learn sing or play an instrument. Finally at age 58 I am going to learn. All I want to be able to do is sing one or two karaoke songs. Been watching several youtube videos and ran into this one. This is what I found out using the app. I am a bass. That sure answers the question of why I would try to sing an 80's pop song and people would ask me to stop! Thank you.

This is good stuff. In addition to practicing with an electronic tuner, it is valuable (even essential) to practice with drones. If you put on a set of headphones and hum (don't sing, hum) a unison, octave, fifth, major third, minor seventh, major ninth, minor third, etc, with an overtone-rich drone (like those in Stephen Colley's "Tune Up" program), you will train your ear to sing intervals that slot properly with the chord. Against the root of a chord, fifths need to be slightly sharp, major thirds need to be flat, minor sevenths need to be VERY flat, etc. Because of this, it is very important to practice humming with drones in headphones, as this isolates the sound as it reverberates in your head.

So this is my first viewing of your videos and I find your style and presentation so very interesting and watchable.... So I've checked out a few of your others and now I am one of your biggest fans... Thank You Aimee!!!!!

Also the InsTuner is really useful with the Strobe View. Anytime I start getting cocky with my pitch all it takes is about 30 seconds trying to lock that strobe dead center and I am once again humbled. It is a great warmup to go from your lowest note to highest note in your vocal range ... locking the strobe into not moving... taking your time with each note... and seeing how long you can hold that note with the strobe locked in the middle. It is painfully humbling but immensely useful for ear training and teaching yourself to sing on pitch.

Thanks Aimee, I did it and in one try, I my voice improved. I'm a new singer, but the app really helped me feel by breath control and cord closure. After a while I got a bit fatigued, and then I stopped belting out my same old blown-out, rough sounding tone and everything settled down (with me concentrating on getting the pitch right on) and my breath settled down and the cords found new closure and finesse and I actually started to make a real singer tone. It was really cool. Thanks a ton!

Thank you Aimee, you are by far the best musical instructor on RU-vid! The piano and voice lessons are fantastic and you're the first one I've come across that teaches how to play by ear! That is what I've been finding so challenging for so many years and your guidance has helped tremendously! I love that you are able to get your lessons across in a very effective and caring way. Your kind and graceful approach is very helpful for those of us who have the burning desire, but lack the raw musical talent that few are gifted with. This is great :D I just have one question. How much are you "allowed" to be off the dead centre? How many cents? I can see the dial wavering a bit when you produce a tone but it doesn't sound off. So what kind of playing room do we have?

I am an Android user and I like to use Pano Tuner. If you watch the Britians Got Talent clip with the Deaf woman singing and playing the Ukulele, you will see that is what she uses as well. Aimee, you may not like it because it is jumpy like the others, but I like that has the option to display the soulfege (do re me fa so la ti do) instead of the note names. You have to be sure to select the transpose and transpose it to the key in which you will be singing for the soulfege to be correct, but I find that it is a great tool.

I use InsTuner as a trumpet player. Thanks for suggestions, like nailing intervals. I went to the last nine years of theJamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop. Alas, it is no more; Curse you Covid! Jamey said that he made up an ear training exercise that he often used while driving. He would blow a starting note on his old-school pitch pipe, sing up the scale, then check to see if he nailed the octave. Ditto intervals.

OK, I've got a weird one. Pick a note, any note, and I'm flat. Just a touch. I have a frequency monitor, and if it's C3 at 130hz, I sing 128ish. Jump the fifth to G3 at 196hz, and I'll sing 193ish. Huh? Yeah, I'm in my 60s but I used to be a professional singer, so it's pretty scary. And it's not like I can't physically produce the sound, cause when I see the monitor I can tune my voice correctly. But I'm not matching the sound I hear. Play C130, I sing C128..... and etc, etc. Any thoughts, please? Is this air flow, resonators, the chords... in other words, something physical? Or have I somehow learned to be tone deaf? Thanks for any help.

A Wonderful lesson. It's given me some great ideas to practice my intervals. InsTuner isn't in Android's play store. I did find CarlTune with a very similar wheel. It also displays the note on the staff. It's fun making the needle jump around the dial. I wish it displayed the scale degrees. But I'm getting faster in translating numbers to the actual note. It is a pain when a song modulates. Numbers don't change. 😄 How close should a student get in pitch? 25 cents? 15? 10? I'm not a guitar. Zero probably ain't happening. 😗

So in doing this I find that I am usually a little bit sharp, ( I think that is unusual ?). Is it a problem with how I hear the sound reverberating in my head? When I get near the note using the tuner I go down and up and quaver around the note, any good way to get read of the quavering?

They’ve upgraded this App, its even better now. I wouldn’t worry about being flat or sharp vocally, that’s your sound. Live there’s always some instruments slightly out of tune, and if everyone was perfectly in tune including your voice, it’d sound sterile AF. This is fun, but in the real world perfect pitch is kind of a curse.

Have you tested these apps against a well-tuned piano or other instrument? I'm using an electronic keyboard which seems to be in tune. I'm using two apps on Android: Swar Meter and CarlTune. Both of them completely fail for low notes starting at about G1, but they both are fine at A1. For very high notes (higher than women would usually sing) they also have troubles. It might be the phone more than the software, but both apps seem to work pretty well up to C6, and at D6 they start getting off by a quarter step (and it doesn't seem to be because of the piano). Those are very high notes, though! The important thing (to me) is how they perform in my vocal range which is about E2 to A4 and both seem to be perfect in that range. The CarlTune wavers a lot when I sing into it, but it's completely still when I hit a piano key. Swar Meter holds much steadier, and I like that better. It's probably doing some kind of averaging. I don't want to have to try to sing a sine wave!

Tuning apps are often used to invade your privacy. Obviously, to work they have to have access to your microphone. The problem is if you do not set the right privacy settings, they can listen whenever they want. I figured this out when I noticed that I was getting a lot of online ads that related to private conversations I recently had. To test this, my wife and I had a conversation about buying a new car. We really were not interested in a new car, so we had not searched online for anything related to new cars. Nevertheless, the next day I started seeing ads related to buying a new car. I removed all the "free" apps (including a free tuning app) that used the microphone from my phone and the ads related to my conversations stopped.

Martin B oh mannnnn something to do with my server...it keeps re-downloading them after I've deleted them. I need to figure out how to stop that in my settings! I don't really have that many! ;)

But at the upper left, it also says, "No SIM." So how can it even tell you how many emails you have?

@ffggddss Emails and the Network connection don't have so much together. Emails work with wifi, Or 3g. But in that case, it's wifi then.

2019 Hey Aimee, you are adorable and knowledgeable about music, especially the mental aspect of music. So, a story that fits with your opening - I've been a singer for all my life, in between those day jobs : ) anyway always learned songs by just repetitive playing the songs over and over and most of my jobs were in top 40 bands - finally in my late 30's I ge a neat gig that lasted two years a cabaret musical - and most were really consistent singers and also Berklee School of music, yeah, some already graduates and a few students. This includes the band also..man it was a great 2 year run. Anyway, the piano player, Deena had a job as a backup singer for a group that was having a cd release party - cut to the chae, she asks me would I want to do it and I did..and she kept hitting this note on the piano in practice and couldn't believe I really couldn't hear that I was, think it was sharp, and I couldn't, was it probably close enough, yeah, though here she is obviously with a better ear than I - she wasn't mind more like, really, really...no no no, I cannot hear I'm not hitting that note. The funny thing - man oh man that band was so loud, I mean vibrations rattling my brain and I was so disoriented a bit. I like the that Ins Tuner too - think we're both visual in "seeing" abstract things such as notes, though your ear, didn't need that much help. Thanks for your tips - I see it's inactive, yet these past few days when I've posted what seems like an old or no longer in use that much, I get answer. Will bookmark this page. : )

You don’t even have to sing a note to test if you’re about to sing on pitch. If you play a note and put your mouth opening as if you were going to sing it to a little speaker or your phone you will hear the resonance boost if you’ve got it. There’s a cool video on this technique by Gary Sage showing using a phone as a vowel resonator.

Do you know what the numbers on the wheel mean?
@originalvonster
@originalvonster 3 года назад
@@kirstenanderson3783 I haven’t tried it yet but no idea, the numbers 0 to 8 don’t make sense to me. I don’t think it’s anything to worry about. The difference between each note is usually measured in cents (100 cents is a semitone or half step) and cents show how sharp or flat you are.
