The puffy cheeks is a really clever way to go about this because it forces the abdominal support muscles to come into place. Nicely done, sir!

I'm not that ambitious a singer. I just wanted to be able to sing in front of friends and family and not be embarrassed. And for many years I couldn't, even after taking some private voice lessons. It was THIS video that I watched a couple of years ago that was the key to unlocking things for me. I was even able to sing a couple songs in front of a big crowd of my extended family recently, and they all clapped for me and were complimenting me on my voice, something that's never happened before (before, usually people would start talking and tune me out when I started singing). That exercise is golden. That was the key for me. Thank you, Tyler. I will be forever grateful to you.

@@tylerwysong Hey, my voice cracks when I do this exercise... It goes into falsetto or head voice or it just disconnects into a airy pulled up chest voice. I don't understand why, I've tried most of the exercises on RU-vid but all of them have the same result

Finally someone mentioned semi-occlusion exercises. What many don't understand is that it is about learning the sensation and getting it to muscle memory. It is also a coordination that you are learning. I learned it by actually singing songs with low volume and pressure. Songs like No One by Alicia Keys, and songs by Bruno Mars, Ginuwine, Michael Jackson. Then once I had the coordination at low level, low pressure... I would slowly add volume. I also used Amazing Slow Downer app to set loops and slow down song a little.... so note are sung longer to really ingrain the sensation. Very good video on this. One of the best.

How long should it take from very quiet to singing convincingly in higher range, if you practice a lot?
@samuelcf97
@samuelcf97 4 года назад
I've done this exercise for months now and I can make that light sound quietly up to C#4 but above that it either flips into head voice or becomes strained.
@samuelcf97
@samuelcf97 4 года назад
can you help me, does it usually take this long
@dozermendoza
@dozermendoza 4 года назад
@@samuelcf97 everyone is different. I mean, you have some kids that literally are natural singers. They can effortlessly do note delineation(trills and runs), while others have to practice for a long time doing scales and singing. There are people that go to college for voice, and still can't surpass a natural child singer. You can grow your voice, your tone, everything, it's just everyone is different. Some have to work hard and long to develop a "popular tone". Some people may be more suited for a genre, even though that genre is not their interest, so they take longer to reach their goals. I used to hate my voice. I practiced for a long time. Did Ken Tamplin exercises while driving to school, did SLS exercises like Brett Manning's and others. Luckily, alot of vocal coaches have popped up on RU-vid that show actual training. I have taken breaks and came back to it. Years, and the thing is, everyday is different. Some days my voice is awesome, everything falls into place, other days it is off a little. So YES, it may take a long time, but continue because you love it. I grew my voice actually singing along with cover artist renditions, like William Singe for example. I am not a paid singer, so it's not something I can pour alot of time to. I work, have kids, military, work out, and only time is when driving to work, or time alone. So time will depend on alot of things. Keep at it. You have to.

Man, I am so blessed by your videos! After seeing how you are making it into the mixed voice I finally got the idea of what this thing is :) Before that it was just something I heard people are talking about, but it was a mystery for me)) haha After seeing you singing that mix voice it inspired me so much that I've started to practice it and in 3 days I have a progress. By the way - I find Roxane very cool song for practicing that voice, I still didn't figure out the puffy cheek exercise, for now it is easier for me to feel the mix voice when I'm singing louder, but my voice there isn't stable for now, but I think I just need to keep practicing to make the muscle stronger. Thank you very much, man! In those few videos you have shared so much wisdom with me, you cannot imagine :)

oh my goodness.. you've literally saved my life. i've been trying to find my mixed voice for the longest time and i've searched EVERY single mixed tutorial on youtube but none of them worked. i was about to give up, but then i saw your video and tried this exercise. at first, i started at the bottom of my range and slid up to my highest but my voice would always enter my head voice and i would feel frustrated. i gave it a few more tries, but as i was reading the comments while doing so, i noticed that someone said to try from starting up and then sliding down. after doing this, i think i've finally found my mixed voice!! i don't feel the break and it feels nice, however, when i'm in that part of my voice, my lips quiver a lot and i think you replied to one of the comments saying it was normal. but anyway, i would like to thank you for helping me find my mix! god bless you!

Best explanation on the subject I have ever seen. I started out only knowing how to pull-up and belt in chest voice. With my voice strained, I started researching different approaches and found that humming and lip trills helped in finding those upper notes that can be sung without straining. But that's where my progress seemed to end.. the notes in between were weak and nothing out there seemed to click. Your explanation and this puffy cheek exercise seems like it might be the missing ingredient to help bridge the gap, because for the first time I'm starting to find that full connected sound I've been looking for. Thank you!

Thank you for this video. I finally figured out what chest-mix really is. As it turns out, I've already been doing chest-mix in my back-up vocals. What I figured out is that you can really feel the vibration in your chest while doing chest-voice. But if you're doing chest-mix, you can feel it in your head and chest at the same time. (it may be different from you, but you can differentiate it according to the intensity of the vibration you can feel on your chest.)
