Galeazzo, On RU-vid, where so many are delivering copies of each other, your work on the singing of the Beatles is truly unique and groundbreaking. I imagine two guys who are no more, sitting on cloud (no. 9, of course), watching and listening to your videos, now and then looking at each other with a smile and a nod as you nail yet another nuance. Meanwhile, those of us still earthbound can enjoy the greatest music ever with fresh ears thanks to you.
Rain has to be my favorite Beatles song. It's so hard to pick a favorite, but every little piece of this song: drums, bass, vocals, harmonies, is just perfect.
As I sit here with my jaw dropped open, I can only picture Van Gogh pouring every bit of sanity he had left on "Starry Night". I am TOTALLY sure that some of these were accidents at one point (like the guitars/drums recorded faster and being played back slower) and Martin locked it in the "for the future" file. But the voices, You have given me a totally different perspective on John's genius. The interpretation is magical and unique. THANK YOU Galeazzo!
Amazing! Your ability to dissect the voices and the subtleties is fascinating. This kid (who truly can't carry a note) is learning something new each time I hear your work. TY!
This is like beina a beginning chef and going to an expensive resturant and the Top Chef comes out and cooks the meal. He explains every cut of meat and the secrets of how the meal is all that you wanted
Dearest Gale, you just KNOW I'm your fan, and how amazing and generous I think you are. To make it all even better - you're SOOO talented, and that great big heart of yours shows in everything you do! THANK YOU!!!
Right on. You brought me a smile. And a tear. I live in Hawaii, where George had a house. I also ran into a guy at the '10 minutes of silence' memorial for John back in 1980 in Santa Cruz, CA, who said he had met John and Yoko not long before at Morro Beach. They had a nice chat. Just thought you might be interested. I was in a Beatles copy band myself in the 60's. Who wasn't, it seems?
George is extremely under rated as a singer he is a very talented singer. He always got the most difficult part usually because he had to sing what was left over after John and Paul.
As the Professor explains; the Beatles were actually 6 or 7 wizards altogether in the EMI studios @ Abbey Road. They understood the speed of SOUND better~than Scotty understands the speed of light. They were playing, and got paid for HARD work.
Thank you! Studio documentation shows that Paul and John played guitars in Rain. We should be ready to learn that Paul's role in The Beatles, especially during the studio years, was more than we may expect and some recent events are confirming this. :)
Your best video so far. Spoken so eloquently of exactly how I feel about this song. Your Italian accent is awesome too. You are a true Maestro of all things musical in Beatle land.
I'm impressed that you were able to type, "When the rain comes, they run and hide their heads" backwards! "Rain" was the B-side to "Paperback Writer". I remember verifying this playing backwards stuff by manually spinning the turntable backwards (counterclockwise). It freaked me out when I heard John singing the main verse!
rain is one of my top three fave beatles' tunes (the other two being tomorrow never knows and helter skelter) because of paul's bass-line, ringo's drumming, the backwards music, and these harmonies! great job!
Most certainly Galeazzo.. and to give George credit, Paul once said in an interview that it was George who came up with the idea for the intro part of the guitar in Paul´s song 'And I Love Her' the famous 4 recognizable trademark notes of the song - Bb/Eb/D/C. Grazie ancora for your splendid work. Take care, Chao.
I totally agree with you about Paul´s role playing the guitar in the studio years. Most people don´t know, the 'Taxman' solo was played by Paul, we thought it was George, and if you hear closely to the bass track played by Paul in the mogg files of 'Something' you can hear him doing the solo in a semi-singing humming voice (you have to turn up the volume). It seems to me he was creating the actual solo George played latter on the song. Thanks so much for your fantastic work. Grazie mille, Chao.
"Rain" Guitar part is intriguing and I have been doing it differently everytime I play in order to sound closer of the the original one. I am dying to check it out Gale.
Nicely done as always -- and great research! Galeazzo, I'm sure you're aware they did the same production on "I'm Only Sleeping" -- recorded the instruments in E minor, slowed it down to D minor for the vocals, and then the final playback was Eb minor. Ooo, that's a song you should do soon if you haven't already!
He was also the one to think up the "She loves you" 'yeah, yeah, yeah, YEAH' *added sixth* harmony to "make the tonearm quiver" (Tim Riley's words in his book, "Tell Me Why"). ;)
My favourite Beatles song! I'm a big follower of your videos, I think you should do some Fleetwood mac lessons because they have some fantastic harmonies!
It's impossible if you don't have the original 4 track machine. The closest thing I could do (hear my John's track here in Rain) was creating a duplicate of a recording track trying to sing it the closest possible to the original and panning the original in the centre of the stereo and the copy far on the right side. If you were about to make a normal double-tracking you would not mind to sing the copy the closest possible to the orignal. They're two different effects.
Really interesting video. Your presentation is great, really insightful. Tried my first harmony ever the other day using garage band. It was Nowhere Man and it sounded great! Thanks for the inspiration and instruction!
Eres magnífico! !, haces el trabajo, difícil por cierto, que cualquier beatlemano que le guste cantar sus canciones haría, si supiera.. claro!!, debes disfrutar con ello mucho
They were on the same single so I think it was the single as a whole, they are both extremely good and share several things that would change rock music forever (more prominent bass, different vocal harmonies, love not being the subject matter), but this song is technically superior, with the different recording speeds, use of backwards tracks, and whatnot
LOVE your videos. I always wondered how they did it. A very small point. On the first screen you wrote , "This recording session was in my opinion doomed to change more than any other.." Doomed implies something bad. For example, "They were doomed to eat only beans until they died". Perhaps the word that fits best would be "destined". Again - no criticism, it just confused me when I first read it since I thought you were going to say something bad happened. Thanks again!
Please can you do "I Saw a Face", "Rocky Racoon" and "Long and Winding Road"? I love your music, its just like listening to the Beatles practicing! Yuo are the Italian Paul McArtney no doubt.
Very good but you omit the low harmony that John doubles in the refrain, doing the note B falling down to the note A and that appears at the right channel with the high harmony. Greetings from Valencia (Spain)
During this period, the Beatles played around with Vari-speed, a recording feature that speeded up or slowed down the tape speed for interesting effects. In our day of digital recording we can raise or lower pitch without affecting tempo, and vice versa. GF, when you record these songs, do you record at the original tempo and pitch and then adjust the recording so as to replicate the effect of slowing down analog tape?
Hi Galeazzo! I love your videos! Your voice emulation is so amazing yet unique! Could you perhaps include "Dear Prudence" in your list of songs you're gonna do? :D (Maybe add it to the top and do it first :P ) Thanks a lot :)
