Learn how to sing with distortion:
www.mymusicalvoice.com/p/the-...
"How do I get the tone I want out of my voice?" "Why do I always sound flat, amateur and a little boring?" "How can I make my voice sound more like the confident singers I really enjoy?"
The answer to all these questions starts not with emulating others or putting your mouth in funny positions while trying to adjust the way you think you sound, but in playing with how you use your AIR!
By learning to use a singing technique called vocal compression, you can add texture, girth and massive amounts of tonal interest... But you need to learn to use it in a very specific, subtle way. It's a tight rope you must learn to walk and a balance that must be acquired through patient, introspective practicing. Let me show you how to do it!
We'll start by taking some inspiration from the great Scott Weiland!

Great video! When I was learning guitar as a kid, I always played with way too much overdrive. As I got better, I learned about the “sweet spot” on an amp-turning it up to the point where it is still clean if you play lightly, but compresses and breaks up if you dig in. I’ve only been seriously practicing my vocal chops since the start of the pandemic, and have really learned a lot from your other stuff on grit and compression, but have always had it as my goal to get enough control of the techniques to dial them back to the vocal equivalent of “edge-of-breakup.” So great to see a vid on just that.

Groovy, thanks Chris! I'd forgotten all about the kind of "whisper" thing that also helps remind me where the actual word is that I'm saying/singing. Thanks for the 3-steps to practising it - this is already feeling like it will become a "natural" response... already feels better - especially as I'm practising a piece that goes up to an G5. Getting out of my own way to let my voice do its job.

Chris, you changed my absolutely horrific natural singing voice into something that's clearly better than 85% of the singers I listen to in just a few years. All for free too!! I truly appreciate all the knowledge you bestow on us peasants. For me it's pretty instantaneous. I used to sing all the time and I do love it, but I kinda lost the spark. This hurts. But your videos help me find joy in it again while showing me(no formal training and have done everything by feel) that I have a natural ability to control my voice in different ways. I always wanted to do voice acting as well as vocals(screaming included) but never found a way to actually make it a part of my life in any sort of meaningful way. I'll get there. Thank you Chris.

I made a comment on your last short video about mixed voice in where I said that I use too much compression and that makes it hard for me to do vibrato and melismas if I want to sing clean. This video feels like a response to that because it helped me figure out how to graduate the amount of compression I use to sing whatever I want. You're something else dude thanks a lot

Great work with the video mix and cover. You’re definitely leaning towards something that many people can appreciate -in the sense of showing the techniques in action, up front, before covering them in detail. And from a marketing pitch, the familiarity of that particular song resonates with many viewers and potential viewers. If I could make a recommendation, I’d like to see this same type of video with something like Freddy Mercury’s work -preferably Bohemian Rhapsody. Keep up the outstanding work!

Hi Chris! Sometimes when I try to practice compression I feel kind of a distorsion in the voice but I think that it comes from an unwanted tightness in the throat. Despite nothing hurts, I do not like the sound of the voice because it sounds like it is not free as I hear constantly the rasp. What do u think? Is it too much support that it is closing the throat maybe?
@chrisliepe

Can you tell us what the hell happened to Bon Jovi’s voice? Did he use bad technique
@chrisliepe
@chrisliepe 2 года назад
He hasn't done a very good job of feeling out his voice as he's aged. Contrast Bon Jovi with the late Chris Cornell's last stuff or Steven Tyler even today. Their voices changed, but they can still hit all the notes. They know how to navigate how the voice gets less flexible and the tissues behave differently, but as long as you get the airflow balance and vocal positioning adjusted accordingly, you're in good shape.
