In this rather LONG vlog episode, we'll discuss a few basic exercises to start singing your lines while improvising.
This is not an easy task!
As you'll discover in the video, it's important to start small, and start singing melodies to easy standards at first.
We'll also dig into an Hal Galper exercise from his book Forward Motion.
Lastly, I'll take the last 10 minutes or so explaining my "personal story" behind singing lines while I improvise.
Do what I say, not what I do! :-)

Interesting video, Marc! Not an easy topic, but important. No lesser jazz master than Herb Ellis suggested that most of the great jazz guitarists he knew sang as they improvised, including Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, and of course George Benson. He strongly advised guitarists to adopt that approach. I find that truly scatting every note is too taxing as you pointed out. But one approach is to "sing" aloud or mentally the first note of each measure, like a short hand target tone thing. Almost like singing the first and last note and allowing your subconscious to "connect the dots".

Thanks for your input, Jay, and I totally agree. This helps to phrase like a horn player and also helps get you out of playing the same old "shapes"

Jazz tourettes? It's not contagious is it? As ever, a nice breezy relaxed mini masterclass. Great insights Marc!

What happens vocally when guitar line exceeds vocal range? Sing falsetto?
@jazzguitar
@jazzguitar 6 лет назад
Falsetto works. For me, if it gets too high, I'll just drop the octave. The contour is what's important for me. I know the range is part of that as well, but the singing aspect doesn't have to sound too perfect.

You're doing "Scat", right?
@jazzguitar
@jazzguitar 6 лет назад
Scat is more involved and there's actually a lot of study to it. This is a scat-lite version for guitarists ;) The important thing here is that you are hearing/singing what you play.
