How to draw & sketch people part 3 | In this pen and ink and life and figure drawing tutorial we take a close look at how to block-in the figure when sketching or drawing the human figure or people. We examine some key concepts and techniques to keep in mind and practice to get the most out of blocking-in. Blocking in addresses proportion, and capturing the whole, enveloping shape that contains the figure.
The key is to look for the big and simple shapes that contain the whole pose.
This tutorial is part of a series of sketching and drawing the figure with pen and ink or any other drawing instrument you may feel comfortable using.
Pen and Ink drawing tutorials, techniques, and tips! :-)

Never too old to learn something. I am 84, been a professional commercial artist all my life and still painting steadily. It is so much fun to you really smart guys with such awesome fresh approaches. I envy you but I'll show you I can do that also..in a stiffer manner I guess. Thanks for sharing!

How come I hadn't seen this video before. This is probably one of the best technical advices I have had ever heard of and seen. This is applicable either to a simple figure/shape up to the most complicated composition. Wow, you have revolutionized my approach to drawing and painting. Thanks Alphonso, you are the best.

Hello Alphonso..I'm Ivan from India..I started teaching drawing a few months back..I am very new to this and I have learnt so much over the past few months during the course of attempting to teach whatever little I know..I assume that you have much greater experience than me as far as teaching is concerned..I have two students for the time being and as I am sure you can imagine, one needs to do a lot of research before teaching..I just wanted to say that your videos have not only assisted me in various ways, but by turn have helped me design a syllabus for my students and helping to make things easier for them..thank you..

Your work is amazing and the articulate way in which you share your knowledge is inspiring. Came across your videos a year or so ago and started to show some to my young children, now 8 and 13. My youngest child draws and does craft at a frenetic pace, almost in a compulsive fashion but this habit has provided therapeutic relief (as he has a lot of energy and suffers from eczema. Artistic activity seems to quite simply provide something else for his hands to do other than itch. I myself am trying to re-hone my skills, first as recreation now for commercial purposes. People often underestimate the contribution that creative people make to society and the healing, transformative power their work has. Your skill is truly a gift and I admire the generosity of spirit with which you share it.

You never fail to amaze. It really helped to get a vertical line down the middle of the page. Having a horizon line reduced stress further. This is the form target at the center of that crosshair. I don't need as much whiskey.

Extremely cool and thought out concept. This is the first time I've seen a method like this. It seems very handy for drawing figures in tight poses. I really like this. It almost looks as if your sculpting or carving the figure out of wood or stone. You make it look easy. I might have to practice this a few times to get the hang of it.

I never thought of blocking in the outside shape before, works like a thumbnail, but better. I don't know how many times I'd start out with a detail and work out from there, running out of room on the paper, or invading the background in a way I did not want to happen. It's hard to teach an old dog new tricks...but I'm working on me. Thank you for your instructional videos.

The other night I sat with two stamps I liked, first one I drew at a good proportion. The second one I ended up using more than half the page. I didn't let it bother me because I am learning and my objective was to finish it, however, my sketching compared to yours is a drawing. Afterwards I was like, ok we need to learn how to control the size. Lots to learn...
@ncshuriken
@ncshuriken 6 лет назад
Thanks for the tutorial, I like the idea of this, it seems like a really useful way to "start out" quickly so you don't lose track of a pose you're trying to get down, but at the same time I feel like it would be really complicated to actually put into practice, kind of like Gesture Drawing which so many people praise for being "a great shortcut for quickly drawing dynamic poses". I tried gestures a few years back but it just never seemed to "click" for me. Things ended up looking like incoherent scribbles lol but the results I've seen from other people doing it look really good. Hopefully I have more luck with this technique because figure drawing sometimes twists my brain in knots but its also my fave type of drawing. Are these poses spontaneous and they only "came to you" after drawing the blocking in shapes? If so thats really impressive man, I always have trouble thinking of interesting poses, so if this can help with that too, its exactly what I need.

When you draw a basic shape you already have an idea what will be blocked in? Which poses, etc? Or you just build a shape that suits your general composition on the painting and see after what can be built there? I have to know how it s better to build the composition...
@alphonsodunn
@alphonsodunn 10 лет назад
Excellent question! I do both. If I'm just drawing from observation I draw the basic shape based on the subject i am observing. If creating a composition I use a shape that works well with the composition and pose the subject to fit it. But that was really a good question, thanks :-)
