Awesome system. I work as a General Superintendent for a large commercial Drywall and Painting contractor in the upper Midwest . Dollar against Dollar this technique is the best for achieving level 5 smooth finishes. You look at how fast he was able to blast out that ceiling. Now when we do hotels or any other 40,000 sheet job, I have to consider what going to provide the best outcome. Especially now with the new silica rules and the art of finishing be replaced by boxes and electric vacuum sanders, getting a nice level 5 isn’t as easy as it used to be. Talent levels aren’t even close to 26 years ago when the last of the hawk and trowel finishers were in the twilights of their careers. Hands down the best system for today’s finishers.
The guy knows how to jam out a job. I am in the floor care ❤ business 🏭 but if i was a GENERAL CONTRACTOR i would hire this guy within a minnute. Good job dude and thanks for showing us how to do this job. You may not know this but you are helping other local communities glean knowledge by posting this content. For this I give you a 5-star review.
Amazing way to do skim coat!!! I live in New Zealand and i do the same way but I do two coat!! I do the second one very very soft just to fix all the imperfections from the first coat!!!!and I just got my tapetech finishing knife, are amazing tools!!!
Aí brunera… ficou fera mesmo estou aqui no Texas e precisei fazer o mesmo, com a máquina da graco provavelmente IV ajudou dimais. Outro nível de facilidade. No mais parabéns da gosto de ver profissional fazer a arte
Well this video show just how quick skim can be.... but have you look closer? Celling was already strait, new coat wasn't even on the corners.... so I'm wonder how long it was take to prep that to that level.
michal skraburski you can’t see from images, but ceilings only had cadex applied to them, and yes, it took less than 5 min to apply cadex since there’s no wiping.
Guys, I’m a General Superintendent for a fairly large Drywall and Painting Contractor in the upper Midwest of the U.S.A. All we do are commercial projects such as hotels, Assisted living , high end condos, office buildings/corporate campuses, and Multi family( Apartments ). Except for the offices, which are mostly acoustic ceilings, we almost always need to do level 5 finishes on flat ceilings in rooms with so much natural light.Even on textured ceilings we’ve adopted fogging prior to texture as our standard best practice in well lighted areas. I can say without a doubt that this method of skimming on average is 20% faster. When you see the actual billing , hour for hour , between a crew that rolls on there skim vs a crew that uses technique shown it becomes immediately clear. Not to mention, we are always doing the jobs floor by floor working from the top down. When I compare schedules I also see the comparison there. Rolling requires guys 20% more time. 100man Hours vs 80 man hours. Etc
@@TheBigLeeg so your one skim coat over cadex is lvl 5? Idk started finishing when i was 14 iam 44 now and never seen a one coat lvl 5 ceiling finish... Yes prolly quicker because of the sprayer but one is dreams in fairy land. Not to be rude just my opinion
@@TheBigLeeg and one more thing are you the super tells everyone how to do it or the super that actually worked to get that job? Before you answer they i haven't met a super that actually worked for his knowledge in a long time if read you read in a book dosent mean you know how to do it
Tony Locker I’m not a General Superintendent because a got a degree , or I’m somebody’s brother or son and what not. I scratched and clawed my way to the top of the heap. I earned my position via merit. Outstanding performance and results. I’m a journeyman Carpenter by vocation . Which is why I can take a set of prints and specs then apply those to a site. All I’ve ever done is drywall from framing through finish. I started mudding with a hawk and trowel before the industry took up boxes. But clearly you aren’t the type to expand your horizons. I’m the type to tell a guy his work looks like shit or his light check isn’t where he makes a horseshit job look right . Or let a guy get away without pre fill or not tape tight to pipes and outlet blowouts. I’m the guy you would hate or love because before you ever step foot in a unit every single screw better be countersunk and or pulled. The butt joint netter not shoulder etc
Danny..., You can even roll-on compound, if you don't have the more expensive sprayer, yes, you can roll mud like paint, then skim it...very cool and time saving especially on ceilings. I have several knives just like this 4 footer which is the largest todate by TapeTechPro, and with some practice, anyone can skim like a PRO, even you, as the knife does most of the work. Good luck! MGTOW.
Bruno, I just finished 1300 sq. Cement ceiling with electric heat. The cement sucked the water out so stinking fast. Spraying the ceiling with water did not even help. Doing it your way. It would be bone dry when you went running the blade on it. You had to do a very small section at a time. My mud was wet and it dried almost on contact. Really need that blade you were using.
Architects ought to be shot for asking for level 5 drywall on a ceiling. Level 4 and flat paint is sufficient. If you want level 5 , pay for a plaster job. Nuff said
@@nothprokernov7028 Don....people dont put flat paint on ceilings in my area....so we have to...this is my 32 year in the trade....residential and commercial
The kid did a shitty job at that. I would almost guarantee the ceiling will look like shit if he doesn´t sand it by hand with light. I thought the same thing, plaster is the best if you want the whole ceiling skim coated. A level 4 finish done by hawk and trowel with a good painter will beat level 5 all day long.
Gabriela Gonzalez in this case I sprayed joint compound to fix concrete unevenness. But if you have new drywall the tuff hide can be a good option if walls are in a good shape.
Anybody knows what there doing if SAND IT MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE damn still amazed by how much everone enjoys sanding... Hone you finishing skill not so much sanding skill damn people
You guys ever use that machine to where you don’t have to wipe ? If you put about half water half with half bucket of compound the shit is like paint there’s no wipe . It’s not a true true skim coat but it makes the wall white and looks like a skim coat lol you guys are good and is that Roosevelt island you on ? I was working over there building the new college .
Is always. Nice to see new ideas even if needs detail at the corners and touch up here and there you save lot of time great job don't leasen to the haters i bet they cant even use a two inch knives
If you want a perfect level 5 try spraying, then use a notched trowel to level out the mud perfectly, then a magic trowel or knockdown trowel to smooth it after, they’re really flexible with round edges so you don’t leave any over lapping edges.
This ceiling would be a great candidate for Sheetrock TuffHIde Level 5 surfacer. Get your ceiling to a solid level 4, then cross-hatch spray the material 18-20 mills thick. Come back the next day for a *very* light sanding and to check for any mishaps and....voila! Beautifully smooth level 5 surface with very little extra labor beyond lev-4 finishing.
Krause Commercial Painting thanks for sharing your experience, I have used hide tuff before and I was happy with results, but spraying joint compound like I do eliminate this last process, those ceilings were only getting 3 coats, on this video is level 2, level 3 I spray the joint and wipe with regular trowel or knife by hand and it looks great, hide tuff I use when client wants level 5 over new Sheetrock with 3 coats and polished, if taping is done good it looks amazing 😉
Isn't there a product, called "equalizer" or something? It's sprayed on like primer and qualifies as a "level 5 finish"? You seem like you got it figured out, me when approached about a job with skim coat requirement, I say I'm too busy, no time, sorry.
Yes it’s called Level 5 Surfacer-Primer. It works great but it cost $60 a 5 gallon bucket where using compound costs about $10. So the amount you save is used to sand and touch up the walls to perfection. I like mud on ceilings and closets but surfacer on main traffic hallways and bedrooms because the surfacer is tougher and less likely to damage during the remainder of the project
I use prep coat $40 a five and an old speeflo 8900 1225 tip and the standard 1/4 hose. Sands great fills little stuff up fine. Level 5 easy. I’ve never tried thinned out compound. Maybe it would work but I wouldn’t use topping too soft.
Texspray Mark 4, 5 and up can spray mud through an airless based spray system. The other texsprays can spray texture but only airless sprayers can pressurize to 3000-3300 PSI which is need to spray compound or Level 5 surfacer out of a paint gun
Yes just thin it properly and use a tip your rig will keep up with. Probably a 621 would work. I’ve put all kinds of stuff thru rigs for 30 years now. Just make sure material isn’t too abrasive. 👍
Someone said it looks like midtown Manhattan but it looks more like the George Washington bridge in the background from the Jersey side? Maybe even Chicago, ldk. This brings back memories of working at local 530. We were required to hang one roll of tape per hour. The units averaged about 60 corner bead per unit. Only hand taping allowed. We worked 7 hour days and had to have seven rolls of tape hung by the end of the day. If you complained about the quota to the union, you got fired. Racketeering at its best 🤕
i do the same system but lay that knife down more and you wont have so much build up that you need to keep cleaning the blade. you are too short so need a longer pole. just wiping caulking if your finger is too straight up youll get the buildup
Then your obviously an Idiot about hard work and time invested skimming this shit by hand, or "Roll on-Wipe off" techniques are labor intensive is this is this is the only way to achieve a perfect Smooth Wall finish it has to be done for the right money. Or?????? So you must be jealous that you didn't make this video If you're not what I just said you are cuz you're probably drywaller and you didn't think of it first?!
@@brunogodinho6326 fuck yea! (Liked your post soon as notified no time to reply!) Love ya fer seeing that one as I did! I straightened him the fuck out had him back peddling like a democrat who WAS talking how the Russian Collusion etc was the GOSPEL until 2.8 weeks ago🤔😂😂😂
If you dont have some one behind you in any weather just means your greedy or lonley... And like to sand. Damn what is with all i can finish anything as long as sand the job 12 times plain crazy
If the rest of you clowns can do better, then post us a video. I was literally born in the Drywall, stucco, plastering trade. I could walk stilts when I was 9 years old. Hawk and trowel in My hand when I turned 15. My brother and I grew up plastering for my old man's company down in Naples and Marco Island, Fl. Million dollar homes. Level 5 with a halogen all the time. Now I own my own company. This guys technique is just fine. Sprayed mud north and south evenly. Then east and west evenly. Then used extra wide blade to level ceiling. (Same way you would level stucco lid with gunite rig, and way better than the average 12 inch blade would do) Could have got up in those angles a bit closer, but if it doesn't sand damn near perfect this time....it will the next coat. Took fraction of the time. Multiple coats and that last final milk coat with high grit sand is what separates the good job from the nearly perfect job. Good video man! Looks pretty damn good brother. Your consistent and repeat your steps same way everytime. Nice
Hendry Home Services LLC grow up taping, my father is a drywaller, this vídeo was recorded just when I got the sprayer on hands, plus this video was recorded for sending for few friends only, thats the reason I recorded it in portuguese, any ways, at least reading your coment I see there is some other good tapers out there. Thanks brother, have a blessed week! 🙏🏻
Hendry Home Services LLC really stilts at 9 that's borderline child abuse and definantly child labour I used to sand when I was 7 and only walls my pop wasn't crazy like yours was by the sound it's lucky you never had a fall and got paralysed or worse money isn't everything btw most plasterers have a hawk n trowel in hand by 15 most good ones anyway I was 13
@@aydentheninja877 My father didn't make us walk stilts at 9 years old. My brother and I used to walk them threw the yard for fun. I wouldn't make assumptions that use the words child "labour". Oh yeah.... most "real" plasterer's don't have a hawk in trowel in there hand at 13. Gotta be a labor for a while before you get a set of tools in your hand.
Trevor, I’m a General Superintendent for a commercial drywall and painting company in the upper Midwest. We do primarily hotels and multi family dwellings Like apartment complexes and high end condos. This technique is top notch. In terms of outcome , wiping it down will eliminate all the dimples and other inconsistencies you’re eluding to. After that it still gets sanded. Dollar against dollar, this technique rocks.
Is called level 5 finish especially for that areas where the sun will show the joints with those big windows so u most do the whole ceiling even if is new drywall
