Interesting, so block hot and sleeves room temp. I've also seen block room temp and sleeves cooled in liquid nitrogen. I wonder what the pros and cons are to each method 🤔 and if there is ever a reason to do both at the same time

Block is aluminium, sleeves are steel. Aluminum expands more than steel so you get more clearance by heating the block than cooling the sleeves.

@@jketchup246 I believe these sleeves are ductile iron (the addition of graphite makes a difference and also Darton spin casts DI but not steel) but your point still stands about aluminum expanding more. However in this case the block was only thrown in an oven for ~20 minutes which is not going to cause as much of a temperature change as throwing the sleeves into liquid nitrogen.

What are the advantages of a sleeve in terms of performance? Why is a sleeve so commonly used in billet aluminium blocks?

I like that these liners are sealed with glue. I never liked the idea of using rubber O-rings for sealing cylinder liners. Sure, some companies do it successfully, but it still looks like a bad idea to me. When you use that cylinder head in a press, do you ever install it on an engine later? I would be afraid of the cylinder head becoming distorted. I enjoy Subaru stuff, but I plan on buying an Evo X in the future. That way, a new variant won't come out and make me wish I could afford it.

Probably 518 as it's better to seal against aluminum.

@@702justin702 515 has never been an issue with aluminum. I've used it with silk thread seal aircraft engine parts. But yeah it's probably not 515 as it is not as transparent and thin as what they're using.

I'm no expert but it's better to press on the block with soft material like aluminum head. Maybe he just keeps one one head for this purpose :p

Why you put the glue around the sleeve ? The right to do is put the glue on the block because the glue can’t go under de bigger diameter of the sleeve. I’m just telling you that because John Catapang from darton sleeves told me that . There is another question, people say that some day every sleeve that is not the OEM will drop because the aluminum cast have some bubles on their structure and with the head compress above steel sleeves under a big heat the sleeve will compress the alloy block and that’s why the sleeve drop . Do you agree with this info ?
