This was super helpful! I need to take in my waistcoat for my school ball and despite ordering the smallest size it is HUGE. It’s good to know that it’s achievable even with so much to take in!

I’m glad it worked out and hope I can help with future sewing projects!

I love your videos. So good. Recently I watched a woman sewing who had a wooden ruler maybe 2 feet or longer. One side was straight and the other curved. I thought after how useful it would be for marking and taking things in but couldn't find the video again! 🙄🙂

Queen Amethyst that would actually be a very useful tool! I’ll have to look into it

I hope you will go true the steps to slim down the arms and chest parts of a jacket. Alot of trifted jackets are boxy and oversize, and would need some work to be corrected. Cheers!

Hello Louis! Thanks for your videos. Your content has inspired me to do alterations at home, and I have fun sewing as a hobby. I was wondering if you could do a video on taking up shoulder seam of a vest? I like a more 1930s style in my attire, so I like to go for shorter waistcoats. I know this is a bit more of a complex alteration, and I cannot find advice online, though my local alterations tailor has done it before. Yours, Jarred

This is really helpful! I’m gonna try to take in a women’s vest. Is there anything else to be aware of when the side seam is not just a straight line? I was just thinking I would have 3 measurements for how far in I’ll take it instead of 2: armpit, waist, bottom. Can I just sew along simple as that?

Just make sure the transition of the measurements are smooth and you’ll be good.

This was super helpful. Thank you. Are there any other alterations you can do on a vest? Is it possible to lower the neckline on a vest?

My vest seems to have just used a top stitch on the back of the neck area, is it a good idea to just open it there and just redo it after the operation?

the back of my waistcoat is a different material to the front - I'm wondering how this effects turning the waistcoat inside out in order to take in the sides

I’ve rented a vest for my husband to wear at our wedding and there is no time to get a new one, is there a way to use safety pins to temporarily take it in?

I would follow this video and hand tack so it can be undone.

The perfect seam to be done is from left to right. Well I don’t know if you are left handed..

Hi! Is there a video or link showing how to tailor a men’s vest with that is lined on the front and the back? (If that makes sense!)

I'm a little lost, did you pick out the seams on the side before you marked it where to take in? I know the edges were raw when you took it to the machine but wasn't sure what step you did that at
@AspiringGent
@AspiringGent 3 года назад
I only take apart the bottom seam to get it inside out. The vest side seams look like that most often.

Curious, after knotting your thread, why not slip the thread through the garment, sort of burying the tail in the garment, pull the needle/thread out about an inch away and then trim the thread? It seems like when I trim near a knot, the knot comes undone.

Hi! I have a question- how exactly do you turn it out so the shoulders aren’t in the way? I can’t figure it out but if I sew the side seams as this is I will be sewing the shoulders into the seam…

Hi! Do you have an recommendations on raising the shoulders? I’d like to raise the vest as it fits a bit low on my chest.

Hi! I love your channel and your accessible way of explaining alterations, which have always been a weak point for me. I can also tell you are really passionate about your work and it comes through 😊This is kind of a specialty question, but do you have any tips for taking in a men's vest to fit a woman? I love the look of menswear and I luckily have pretty small breasts I'd still like like it fit a little closer to the body. When I take in the waist I still have the problem of billowing lapels. My vest is second hand so not terribly precious and I'm willing to experiment a little. If you made a video about this I know it would be popular--as getting mens waistcoats is much easier (and they come in a much greater variety) and well gender noncomforming people exist (and are outpacing the ability of the industry to match their needs) and need help tailoring! Luckily it seems a large proportion of the queer community can sew--I suspect theatre is to blame 😂. It's not difficult to find womens suit coats, but for some reason waistcoats are rare.

Totally agree. My daughter is wearing a mans vest to prom. I'm afraid I need to unsew, cut and resew the neckline because taking it up at the shoulders hasn't been enough to get the right fit. Now the back of the vest is crawling up the back of her neck. And we started with an xs! yikes.

Hello, could you please help me? I have a waistcoat that will need also shortening on the shoulders (also proportionally taking from the back/neckline). Will that technique work as well ? The only thing that bugs me is that the back and front side on the shoulders is not connected in the middle like in the hips. The back part on the shoulders goes a little bit in the front and it’s connected perhaps 2 cm in the front.
