FAQ, PLEASE READ: This method of cleaning is specific to vintage/legacy bags that are: 1) made of the full grain legacy leather, 2) unlined, and 3) don’t have glazing. Why only legacy leather? Once Coach moved away from the full grain legacy leather, they began to use cheaper leathers that were sealed (so they won’t dry like this) and bonded leathers (which are made of smaller pieces glued together that can fall apart if soaked). In addition, if the bag is lined, it can make it incredibly hard for the bag to fully dry in which case you’ll end up with mildew and other such gross stuff potentially growing in there and we don’t want that. Why not glazing? Well, as leather expands, it swells and the swelling of the leather can actually crack the glazing and there’s no going back from that. BEWARE, even some early 2000s unlined legacy leather bags have glazing on the shoulder strap, in which case you’ll want to only wash the bag itself and do a topical cleaning/wipe down on the strap. Thank you for reading!

Cant belive someone did the same thing i did. Lol. I have the same coach bag. It was in a basement that flooded and sat for days and was full of mold and mildew. I figured i had nothing to loose so i put it in the washing machine, twice. It came clean and didnt ruin the bag. The vintage coach leather is excellent quality, not like todays. It did take a lot of love afterwards. Every couple weeks i conditioned with olive oil & kept a dryer sheet in the pockets. Final conditioning was using Leather CPR. I found your chanel looking for ways to clean and shine the brass. Thanks for sharing.

Ok Mr. James. As I spoke to you a couple days ago. I have the 9326 color red. Never know their name when I bought,over 20 years. I washed it with my shampoo, dried it , conditioned with Coach lotion over and over many times. It's now like new! It's lovely beautiful ❤️. I am so happy!!!! As I promised, wanted to share with you. Today starting to wash a few of them the ones my girl borrowed when she move away from home for college 10 years ago. I have more than 20 bags from coach, 2 White, 2 cream, the rest are colors and black. She borrowed 4, I washed them all and restored back . I am so happy ,Josh, wish I can take you out for a fancy dinner (not a date, as a friend who saved my Vintage bags that I planned to give up) only if I can show you pictures of my restored bags. Now I know how to detect the style and names with the code inside the bag. Wondering if coach still make those. Saw online someone selling for 40 bucks. Exactly like mine. How could people sell a such beauty for 40. I love all mine for each of them has a story and so much memories. Have a happy weekend Josh with loved ones. BTW I have a black Janice like yours in brand new condition. it's 4P 9950.

Elizabeth Peterson LOL!! It totally works, though. Since the leather is natural, top-grain hide and not the bonded leather, it’s basically like us washing our own skin. This is how Coach actually restores their vintage bags too. They had a few videos on Instagram showing them cleansing some bags for The Originals collection!

Hi Josh, very informative video. You are quite right to discourage people from using a wax shoe polish because it does not actually re hydrate the leather; whereas the shoe cream not only re hydrates dry leather, it also contains more pigment that will more adequately cover up any scuff of pigment loss. The other drawback of wax polish is that it acts as a sealer, which does make it mildly water and dust resistant but if it is not periodically removed with acetone or Saphir Renomat, it will not allow conditioners to thoroughly penetrate the leather and fully condition it. This is exactly how leather can begin to crack, because the pile up of wax polish has successfully deprived the leather from absorbing conditioners. The fix of course, is to remove it with acetone but this is a more advanced technique as it is incredibly aggressive and may result in the removal of the dye and leave the leather dry. For this reason it is essential to follow this procedure with a treatment of leather dye and conditioner.

T Reyes I know it sounds insane, right!? But I promise it works! The two key things are letting it dry completely and then doing a good super hydrating condition on it once it’s out of the bath (seriously go to town until it won’t drink up any more conditioner). It’s actually really cool to see too - when the leather is soaking wet you can actually see water seeping naturally through its pores just like our skin since the leather hasn’t been bonded or heat treated or coated in any way! They don’t make bags like that anymore!!!! Cheers and thanks so much for watching!!!

Best of luck!!! Just a quick note - I wouldn’t do it if it’s starting to get chilly where you are - it’s CRITICAL that the bag dries completely and that it has outdoor air circulation around it that will dry the bag. If it’s nice and warm, then soak away and great luck!!!

Nice vid! If I left a sharp bag like that out on my porch…I’d have three mice or a chipmunk inside of it in the morning….or a bear or raccoon would have walked off with it!! Seriously, tho - if you can invert the bag over something supportive overnight, there is less chance of water staining to the bottom of the bag as it dries. And dark colors clean up soooo much better than light tones, IMHO!!💕

Hi Josh! Enjoyed your video! Loved that you are so clean about your Coach bags! A couple of years ago, my son inadvertently spilled a pint of milk into my lined Coach Ava chain tote quilted bag and I was horrified! I immediately rescued my cell and key fob and then, after emptying the rest of the contents, put the Ava tote into the washing machine set on "ultra hand wash" and added Tide with Bleach powder. I then let it air dry for a couple of days suspended in my laundry room. Then I conditioned it with Coach conditioner and it came out great! Looks beautiful and doesn't smell like sour milk! Lucky me! I wanted to relay this information because I know that you are recommending your cleaning process with unlined bags, but I had to do something with my lined quilted Ava bag because it was not useable since it was soaking wet from the milk. It was either I washed it or I tossed it, so I figured I had nothing to lose by washing it. Also, I have a vintage Coach ergo bag in red that is very well loved. My fav. The ergo bags today don't hold a candle to the vintage ones. Despite conditioning it repeatedly, it is extremely worn, and although it's clean, it doesn't look any better. Would you recommend dyeing it? And, if so, how would you recommend I do that? Are there any products you would use? Thanks so much again for your expertise!
@joshswatches
@joshswatches 2 года назад
Hi there!!! First of all that’s amazing that you were able to throw your bag into the wash and have it come out without issue!! That’s amazing and I’m glad the milk spill didn’t cause you any problems! As for the dyeing, I personally have never tried to but I’m sure you could give it a shot. The red bags are always so hard to keep nice once they’re worn. For dyeing a bag you’ll need to strip it with acetone first and then if not done right it can totally change the feel of the leather and suffocate it (if it can’t absorb conditioner). I think if you have nothing to lose with the bag then it’s worth a shot. I’m sure there are some great videos out there about how to do that, I unfortunately am not an expert when it comes to that! But good luck and I hope you’re able to find something that works!!

Hello! Just to clarify - I would NOT do this on a newer coach bag. They’re not made of the same kind of quality materials as vintage coach that can withstand being soaked the way this one is. The legacy leather was full, top-grain, porous leather and the bags were unlined, meaning you could soak them and they would dry like this one has. The newer bags are mostly lined, have lots of glazing, and are generally made from bonded leather, so soaking them could easily ruin them.

@joshswatches 9 месяцев назад
I'm so glad to hear this helped! But sorry to hear about your newer bags. Unfortunately, the canvas bags just aren't really cleanable the same way... you can really only spot treat those. For one, those bags have lining and a lot of filler to make the canvas shell feel more robust, but it also means they can never dry properly. And they mostly have glazing which would crack if you got the leather wet and it swelled.

Ok I know you've done this twice but I would love to see it again if you're willing. I see that you bought a $27.00 dollar ebay bag, but that bag was in decent shape with minor color loss. I'd like to know how this works with a busted bag. Not torn, but out of shape, ink stained and worn. Only because that's what the majority of us are dealing with when shopping ebay. Is it possible to bring these back to life as well, or is it a pass?
@joshswatches
@joshswatches 3 года назад
Hi! Great question, and totally fair, I’ll see if I can find a run down bag. Might take some experimentation; like you point out, I do tend to buy bags in excellent condition and most of my bags are in that condition as well. Soaking and letting dry will actually fix the shape and structure of the bag no matter what cosmetic condition it’s in. that’s what happens when you remove all the oils from the leather with soaking and then rehydrating with conditioner. However, once you’ve done that it must be stored stuffed to maintain that good shape. With all that said, I’m in the camp that loves it when bags are naturally worn and have lots of patina. Any of the browns, British tan especially look GORGEOUS when they’re beat to hell, in my opinion, just because it’s natural wear and not fake, made to look worn kind of wear, and I’m not sure I would try to get rid of any of that. I’d definitely soak it for cleanliness, but part of the appeal of vintage legacy leather is that it was made to last a lifetime and wear with its owner, picking up marks, stains, and gracefully showing its age as it lived its life... I’m actually trying to accelerate that on one of my vintage coach briefcases LOL!

Thanks for making these so very helpful videos. I recently found that exact bag you have in your video in the trash! I saw the strap sticking out and recognized it as being a Coach strap! I have gone through the cleaning process which removed not only stains on the exterior leather but also the caked on candy on the interior. Someone probably just thought they couldn't clean it and threw it away! Can you imagine that? So now I'm at the point where I need to touch up the worn corners of the leather. Melanie Hi there! Thank you so much!! I definitely wouldn’t try or recommend doing this with a newer Coach bag. I’m not sure if they use bonded leather, but glazing doesn’t do well with soaking as it’s basically just glue and could crack or separate from the leather if soaked. The lining inside might also prevent the leather from properly drying and cause an odor to grow in there. In the case of a newer bag you can usually spot clean it with the Coach leather cleaner, but be careful when scrubbing away anything as the finish on the leather can be damaged. Hope this helps!!!

Josh for those of us climates like flat Florida 8 feet above sea level with monsoon rain more than once a day the air is thick with humidity for months on end. What I do is position hard to dry items inside the house in a corner of a room and leave a fan running on it repositioning when needed. If I left a Coach bag outside to dry the rolled seams would mildew inside. Please pass this on as I know this never occurs to anyone who lives here.
@joshswatches
@joshswatches 4 года назад
Izzy Hello!!! I’m actually in Texas and we also suffer from horrendous humidity and so I can really only do this during the summer months when I can leave bags outside (winter here is too cold to dry anything properly). I’ve mentioned this to a few other people but even better than a fan is to get DampRid or something similar; a fan just circulates the air but DampRid actually pulls the moisture out of it. I keep containers of it in every room of the house and in my closet. It’s a life saver. Hope this helps!!!

@joshswatches
@joshswatches 4 года назад
Leah Price Hi! I did answer another viewer, but no worries! First off, though, I want to clarify that this process is merely to refresh and cleanse the leather and sanitize the bag - stains are a bit trickier because with full grain leather the staining can actually penetrate the leather and permanently stain it since its porous and not sealed in any way. Even in the bag in this video you’ll notice that the stains didn’t come out with the wash. That might be a question for someone like Leather Surgeons or your local Coach boutique. In terms of using Brasso on nickel - I haven’t in my personal experience ever needed to touch up any of my nickel hardware (nickel is a more industrial metal so it won’t ever be a mirror polish). Hope something in here was helpful, apologies if not!

To answer your actual question, I don’t have any experience with lighter bags - I’m scared to carry lighter bags in general, so I’ve never owned one, but Coach’s vintage tan leather is absolutely stunning and maybe one day if I found one in good nick I’d pick it up, but even so, not sure I’d ever carry it. I will say that tan shoe polish/cream works great on British tan, which is as light as I’ve ever gone with Coach. Hope this helped! Cheers!!!

Hello! Sorry for the delayed response! So the shoe cream I use does not show up as shinier, though I keep my bags conditioned so they always have a luster to them anyway. The shoe polish you want to avoid is the cheap Kiwi type stuff that’s like a wax cake. The shoe cream in the video is much more like a hand lotion in consistency. Katherine Stark Hi Katherine! I have to say that short of sending it to the Leather Surgeons, I’m not sure there’s much of an at-home remedy once ink or a foreign substance has fully penetrated the leather. You can kind of think of those stains like human tattoos - it’s probably “possible” to get them out but given that you’re probably not looking to invest a ton of money on top of buying the bag, I don’t think it’s worth it for these. Maybe if it was a vintage Chanel but I generally pass if it’s a vintage Coach. There are exceptions, of course, but personally I would pass. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching and happy new year!

Nuni Nuninu Hi there! I’m afraid my oldest bag only dates back to the early-nineties so I can’t give you a definitive answer on that. However, I will say that as long as it’s natural top grain leather you should be fine to use this method, though maybe go a bit gently. It’s when we start talking about the crappy bonded leather that Coach is doing today that I would say not to do this. There’s a lady on RU-vid who has a video on her 50-year-old Coach bags and how she cares for them (search for that), it might be more relevant to your bags! Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful! Hi Josh! I have the same bag in red and am ready to clean it. The Brasso won’t hurt the leather? I’m sort of afraid to try that.
@joshswatches
@joshswatches 5 лет назад
GG Perry Hi there! It shouldn’t (I’ve used brasso on my vintage Coach for years and haven’t had an issue). However, I will say that you should be as careful and precise as possible. Use a cotton swab and use just as much as you need so it doesn’t get anywhere, then wipe the area down thoroughly as soon as you’re done with what you’re cleaning. If you leave it too long, it will start to get into the leather and leave a white spot. Although even that isn’t impossible to get out as it’s just surface residue but still. IF you do find yourself with a spot that won’t wipe away, a good leather cleaner will get it out.

I followed your instructions to a tee and did vacuum thoroughly before washing. I live in Mobile so it’s been pretty nice here. She stayed out most of Tuesday, all day yesterday and was completely dry this afternoon. I used the shoe cream all over, then conditioned and she is gorgeous. @joshswatches
@joshswatches 4 года назад
Kelly Kendall Hi there! I probably wouldn’t do this with that kind of bag - essentially what can happen is you can end up with moisture getting trapped in between the lining and the leather and that can cause mildew and odor so I probably would just do a surface or spot cleaning on that. I just stumbled on this video because I have a vintage coach purse that I thrifted that needs some TLC. It has the same scuffed edges as the purse you cleaned. What would be the difference between a shoe polish, like you used, and leather dye? Thank you for all the good information!
@joshswatches
@joshswatches 2 года назад
Hello! The shoe cream (which is a little different than shoe polish) is more for small spot touch up on corners on bags that maybe have a bit of wear, where leather dye is generally better for a much more intensive, all-over recoloring, especially if the dye isn’t perfectly color matched to the original color. Think of it like touching up a scratch versus repainting a car.

Hey Josh! I purchased one at a tag sale and I washed it the way you suggested. It is a cordovan/mahogany bag. When i washed it the water turned burgundy. I question if the previous owner had used some type of polish (like kiwi) on it. The finish of the bag doesn't appear that great (appears to be a REALLY old one). Do you think that washing it again might help? Any other suggestions? Also, I am looking for a camera style bag (more squarish lines) do you happen to know which bags would have the longest strap for a cross body? Being a guy it appears some of the straps on certain bags may be too short?
@joshswatches
@joshswatches 3 года назад
Hello! That does tend to happen when you wash really old bags. It doesn’t necessarily mean the owner dyed it. You’ll get some bleed because the water is taking out the oils and grime from the bag and along with that will come some of the leather color. It’s not a concern though! And as for the finish, I’d definitely give it two or three thick and good coats of conditioning. My recommendation for camera bags (if you’re okay with canvas) is always Billingham. They’re hand made in England even to this day, their canvas is 100% waterproof, and SO reasonably priced. They’re my absolute go-to travel bags. T Reyes Ahh I would love to find some great vintage Dooney! I’m not as familiar with their leather, unfortunately, but as long as the bag is top grain leather, is unlined, and doesn’t have glazing, I would assume you could do this with one. Fabric lining will trap moisture in between it and the leather and since leather expands when it’s wet, you might risk the glazing cracking and separating from the bag when the leather is soaked. I would really need to get my hands on one to know for sure.

@joshswatches
@joshswatches 3 года назад
Hello! A quick disclaimer - this is only for vintage legacy leather bags, and I just have to mention because it will probably ruin any kind of newer bag. As far as the leather smell - anything you do will change its unique odor, so by purifying the leather of its oils through the bath, you’re probably going to change the smell a bit. That said, IF you do this, you NEED to condition it, and the conditioner will likely impart its own odor on the bag so if you can find a conditioner that gives you a nice leather smell you could do that. If you like it just the way it is, I would say not to mess with it. Hope this helps!

Unfortunately spot cleaning and maybe misting the inside with a deodorizing solution is the only thing I’d feel comfortable doing since Coach uses bonded leather and paints their leather now (doesn’t stand up to soaking). Be careful when scrubbing the outside too as you can somewhat easily remove the color. The above is the biggest reason why I don’t buy new Coach as they’re no longer made to have decades of longevity.

Hi there! Going to go out on a limb here, I know Saphir cream as being like the shoe cream I used (to touch up color). You say you conditioned the bag with it, and any kind of color cream is really to be used just to do some small spot touch ups for color fade, not to condition the bag. If you did use the coloring all over the bag then yes it can be overdone and will probably need to be stripped off with acetone. If I’m totally wrong and you’re talking about a leather conditioner like the Coach leather moisturizer that I used, then no you can’t over condition, just let it sit out and let the bag absorb the lotion. @joshswatches
@joshswatches Год назад
I think I understand your question but these were never stiff and were never meant to be stiff. Stiff leather generally indicates that they’re lesser quality leather (like bonded leather that’s basically plastic blended with leather fibers or in the case of LV epi, It’s a Heat embossed leather which is also a lesser quality leather that’s had a new grain embossed into it). None of those leathers should be soaked and I don’t buy them because I always look for full grain leather which mostly will be very supple and stay that way as that’s how leather naturally is. Hope this helps!

@joshswatches
@joshswatches Год назад
Yes, of course they do. Unless you’re buying an Hermes Birkin or Kelly or a classic Chanel flap, every bag is going to lose its value. You should NEVER buy any kind of fashion item (bags, shoes, watches) expecting to be able to sell it for money. Especially if it’s been used. Coach bags specifically are cheap bags that are only a couple hundred dollars new, so once they’ve been used, they’re not worth much. Same is true of LV, Fendi, Prada, etc. You have to look at your investment in any luxury hood as paying for your enjoyment when you carry that bag or wear that watch. That joy is what you’re spending on.

Hi! I’m assuming you’re talking about a vintage legacy leather bag; your best bet is to very gently scrub it with detergent while it’s in the soaking phase of this cleaning routine. IF IT ISNT A LEGACY BAG, DO NOT SOAK. Your option then is to try a good leather cleaner and again gently scrub at it, though note that newer Coach bags are painted and not dyed so it’s possible to take off the color from the top of the leather.

Without knowing anything about Roots I wouldn’t be able to say, unfortunately.

Hi josh! I just bough a goldish kinda silver leather coach too on ebay but it has a few stains on the bottom, how can I paint them as well because I don’t know if there exists gold polish paint?

Maria Paula Samudio Hi Maria! That’s a fantastic question and I’m afraid I don’t have a great answer for that. I think what I would do if I were you is take it to a shoe cobbler near you if one is open and have them take a look. They would definitely know how to fix that leather. I would hate for you to DIY something and risk ruining the bag. Hope this helps! Cheers!!!

Do you have any recommendations for pebbled leather? Same procedure?
@joshswatches
@joshswatches Год назад
This is specific to vintage Coach bags made of their full grain legacy leather. This will not work for bags with: lining, glazing, bonded leather, painted leather, or any combination of the above. Most pebbled leather bags can only be spot treated because most pebbled leather is a refinished (not full grain) leather and the lower quality is bonded leather (a mix of leather fibers and poly) both of which can be damaged or apart if soaked.

What kind of conditioner do you use? Would it work on a light tan, not shiny leather?

Hi! The best thing for these bags is coach’s own leather moisturizer. But I’ve had trouble finding it in store recently (and buying online means paying shipping on a $12 item 🙄) so a good alternative that I’ve used for years on some nice high end luxury car leather is the Chemical Guys Leather Conditioner which can be found here: www.amazon.com/dp/B00FALVXLY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_XPA7EHTD7CPYGQ7WSZ4M

Could you please tell me which color you would use of the Moneysworth shoe cream for your British Tan bags? Thank you
@joshswatches
@joshswatches 3 года назад
Hello! British tan can be a bit difficult as there are lighter and darker bags that are all British tan, and then it depends on how much patina you have on it, but I’d start with the color called scotch and then try cognac if that’s too light (but always start lighter than darker). You could also buy both and mix your own blend to perfectly color match your bag since they’re only $5-$10 a pop. Hope this helps!!!
