In this video, I will teach you about the missing link for playing over a 12 Bar Blues progression the right way. It's something that so many people do incorrectly out of convenience and lack of awareness more than anything else. Playing over a 12 Bar Blues is more complicated than most people realize. Every time there is a chord change, there is actually a KEY change as well! That means you should be adjusting your notes when soloing with every single chord. This video will get you the most important notes you need to start out with and give you a glimpse at what soloing with the Mixolydian mode is. Mastering the skills in this video is one of the secrets that separates the Pros from the amateurs among guitar players!

So good. Thank you! Can't believe I'm learning this for the first time.

You’re welcome and thank you for the feedback! It’s so widely accepted to play the pentatonic scale over a 12 bar blues that so many people don’t have any idea at all. Hopefully we can bring this to light a little bit more! I’ll be releasing a backing track video next week to help practice this concept as well. Stay tuned!

Great teaching technique. Thanks. I've been changing scales as I solo, but this ties it together nicely. Thanks

Would be helpful if you could explain why this works. Obviously you can hear it but how do you know which note to hit in each scale?
@ianarthurs1221
@ianarthurs1221 8 дней назад
Great question! It all comes down to the chords. The notes in the chords determine which notes you should be playing at that time. A7 has A C# E G in it and D7 has D F# A C in it. The primary difference being the C# and C conflicting in the two chords. Reflecting those notes in your playing during their respective chords will achieve what so many miss!

I enjoyed this one.. the information was very helpful and you presented clearly ... Good job! Is there anything special we can consider for the E7 using your methodology? With the notes E- G#-B-D, the only notes that share with Am pentatonic are D and E. So could we use the G# and B in the Aminor pentatonic during the E7? I might noodle with that when i play later. I am learning blues soling at the moment and this was helpful in understanding some things. Thank you.
@ianarthurs1221
@ianarthurs1221 13 дней назад
Thank you so much for the feedback and I’m glad it was helpful! You hit the nail on the head with E7. To play over it “correctly” you should use the notes of the chord. E G# B D. However, the V chord of a 12 bar blues is a little funny. Quite frankly, you can get away with playing the pentatonic over it pretty darn well despite the notes not matching up that well. It’s all about where you land your phrases and what notes you emphasize. All of that being said, you can and should try to play the notes of the E7 while playing over it. But just know that there’s some wiggle room there and see what your ear tells you!

I typically use a V7 arpeggio over the five chord, so in A, I'd use a E7 arp.
@37BopCity
@37BopCity 7 дней назад
This is not a 12 bar blues because you don't include the V chord and resolve the progression This is only a 2 chord vamp. If you're trying to teach the basic fundamentals to beginners, you should explain the difference. And how there are many variations on the basic 12 bar blues form. And it would be a lot better if you had a looper and improvised on the chords to show beginners what to listen for, and the right notes to play.

I have already filmed part 2 to cover how to play over the V chord and will be releasing it soon. There’s a ton of material to cover no doubt. I like to try to do simple videos for people to digest one thing at a time ideally. Appreciate the comment!

Lame. The five chord is the hardest and you left it out.
@ianarthurs1221
@ianarthurs1221 8 дней назад
Haha, I’m sorry you feel that way though I also disagree to some extent. First off, I have a video coming for the V chord soon. Secondly, the V chord is in some ways easier because it’s a little bit more anything goes than the I and IV chords. After teaching for 20 years, the trend I have always seen is that people typically don’t know about the major 3rd during the I chord. They usually just stay pentatonic the entire time. So fixing that is step one. If you have that already then you’re ahead of the game in some ways.
